Topic: We got a second race car today:

The Duff Beer Civic has been a bit too reliable of late, three races without blowing an engine, so today we picked up our new race car. It's a rusty 1968 Opel Kadett Wagon, one of my personal favorite cars of all time (except for the rusty part). There are a bunch of other parts that were scattered about as well, and I think that we have enough parts to get it drivable again. I think that my favorite part is the roof rack. I may try to see how many suitcases I can strap to the top of it. I took some pics of us dragging it out of the field that we found it in:

I bought one my junior year of HS and pretty much lived out of it until I traded it for a '62 Sprite.

Is it missing the front axle, or just three tires?  What a find!  What were the other cars out there buried in the bushes?

Re: We got a second race car today:

Parts for it were scattered about; I think that the only thing still on the car is the rear suspension. Looking at it's state inspection sticker, it was probably last operated around 1976, so it's really only got 8 years of wear on it. Hell, it's almost new! We should get it all put back together in a few weeks. They are really simple cars to work on, and it's a carburetor/points motor, so it should be easy enough to make it work. The only downside is the automatic transmission, but there were two of them, so hopefully at least one works. The fluid in them looks good, as does the oil in the motor, so hopefully they were well maintained. We'll probably rig up a transmission cooler and temp monitoring system like we did for the Civic's motor oil so we can try to keep it healthy under track conditions. It's up on jack stands now in one of our unmarried driver's driveway, with a car cover over it to keep him out of hot water with his homeowner's association. Most of the parts are stuffed in the back or at a friend's house, and I'll be bringing some stuff over to my place to tear it down and inspect it. The biggest problem is going to be the rust, especially on the front driver's side subframe piece that the suspension bolts to, and we're probably going to have to do some repairs to the engine and transmission mounting areas, plus it will need a gas tank, although after watching the Tunachuckers last race, we may just spring for a fuel cell and save ourselves some time and headaches.

The guy had some badly rusted out VW bugs, a Pinto that had been rolled, a 1940's Ford bread truck, a couple of Starions/Conquests, and a few other rusting hulks sitting around. We thought about the bread truck, but that would have been way too much work, and we are basically lazy.

Re: We got a second race car today:

Just a quick update, it's a roller, and I think that we have most of the rest of the pieces in working condition, just need to bolt it all together

Parts scattered about is the natural progression in decomposition.

Love it!

Re: We got a second race car today:

My mom had a '68 Kadett when I was about 5. This was in Minneapolis. It had an 18" rust hole in the floor in front of the passenger seat. Slush would get scooped into the passenger's lap when in motion. Such a terrible, terrible car.

In other words, excellent Lemons choice! Welcome to Class C!

Re: We got a second race car today:

It is incredibly rusty, we're going to have to weld a whole new floor in it, but the Duff car was the same way and we got it all sorted out.

Re: We got a second race car today:

So, a couple of years go by while we finish up some other projects; I'd post some stuff about the 500HP supercharged Civic, but it will never see a Lemons event, the suspension bushings alone would put us over the limit. Looking around the Duff Beer Racing Global Headquarters Compound, next up is putting a window A/C unit in the custom Harley shop because it's 98 degrees in there, putting in a new roll-up garage door in the middle bay, and the Kadett. The number of bushings, bearings, seals and other crap involved in putting the original powertrain in it is relatively daunting and problematic to source, so we thought why not do what we know:

http://importsnc.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=9181&d=1370266237

It will fit easily between the rear subframe rails, and the whole swap cost $200. Plus we've probably got everything else necessary to get it running laying around. I figure we sell off the Opel powertrain stuff and we'll probably be ahead on $.

Also, for the next CMP race, English Nut Brown Ale with extra bacon. It's boiling now and I don't think that my office has ever smelled so good, they should make air fresheners that smell like this:

That plan cannot fail, although I humbly submit that a survival sled is considerably more aerodynamic, should you have one handy.

Yes, that's the plan, it wouldn't fit in the front anyway without major surgery. In the front I'm planning some kind of cannon shooting something biodegradable, maybe cheese balls.

Re: We got a second race car today:

It's got a 1.9, which purportedly came from a daily driven Opel GT and is in good running condition. There's a crapload of other parts with it, three rear ends, but no flywheel, just a flex plate from an automatic, an extra set of pedals, a huge pile of white powder in the driver's footwell, a bunch of steel wheels with tires in various states of decay, etc.
