Topic: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

this just popped into my head earlier today. it originally start by thinking about a compressed co2 cannister system that would just blow air on the rotors. not so great for an endurance race...

then i started searching for diy brake cooling ducts and seems that everything from mustangs to minis are setting up diy brake cooling systems.

just wondering if anyone has or is working on such a system.

dryer tube ftw!

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

yep, i'd planned one using dryer tube or something similar.  God knows we need all the brake help we can get.

I've used that 1.5" flexible swimming pool vacuum hose before. Worked great.

Dropped caliper temps from 350°+ to 250°.

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

I have always used them.  4" flexible aluminum duct, look in the heating / cooling/ natural gas venting section of home depot, you'll see the stuff.  Run it from the center of the car to the centerline of the spindle, then run it outboard and aim at the brakes.  Turning won't crush your tubes then.

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

do any of you have pictures of the setups?

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

No, we prefer to setup a right-side pull-bias system so when we hit the brakes the car pulled hard to the right, allowing us to set up brilliantly for left turns...

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

At the SC race some team got most dangerous banned tecnology by using electric brake cooling. Google "bilge blower or Atwood turbo 3000 blower" I thought about trying it but I can't a find one other than online. About $23. Don't know if 145 CFM is good enough.

For right now it looks like a 2 liter soda bottle(funnel) and some tubing is the cheap answer.

Odd, I didn't see anything worth blocking.

If you want to check them out firsthand, West Marine has them locally for as low as $30.99 http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/st … sNum=12111

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

we had issues with cooling our MR2 brakes. So at 1230am we had this idea to take Gatoraid bottles, the large ones for the intake, then use the little ones for the duct, all taped together using aluminum duct tape. It worked brilliantly! It was not pretty. But it kept the brakes working for us on the 2nd day!

here were the brakes 3/4 though day one. We had a small issue of the caliper sticking.

It was not perfect, but it was enough to have brakes at the end of day 2.... sorta

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

lol...we did the same thing to make a cold air intake for a toyota that didnt have an airbox (sucking hot engie air directly into the MAF sensor on the BABE rally.  The thing wouldnt go above 30mph in the mountians and it was dying fast so a quick roadside stop, soda bottles and aluminum tape and suddenly it was pulling up the hills better than our own car.

That was us smile

Just some PVC, dryer blower and the heater blower repurposed. It was no meaning - just for fun. Just do like the previous poster said and use some heater duct to the center of the spindle. That and some zip ties is all you need. If you run good brake pads (i.e. Hawk Blue or better), you don't even need ducting except on way under braked or big cars..

Bill, as a multiple MKI MR2 guy myself and our team, we (Toyota team) thought you guys would be a lot faster.. what happened?

Re: is anyone running brake cooling ducts?

We did not want to show off. So we sandbagged the race. They purposely put me in the car so that I would give them the most laps to catch up on. They also decided to use up the old tires we had around, like my 10 year old Continentals from my BMW.
Plus the engine is a plain old stock 1991 5SFE, I am pretty certain we did not even change the paper air filter. and we have done nothing to the chassis except bang out the dents from when it was T-Boned.

We were faster than the Fiero. and in the end, that is really all that really counts. smile

Bill, just admit that you let Tulay drive and be done with it.  Tulay = slow.

The fog lights on the Camaro line up with the front brakes almost perfectly, so a few feet of dryer duct was all we needed.
