Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

Yeah, I don't have any problem on my personal PC (running FireFox and NoScript.)

It's just my work PC.  Oh, well... I don't remember it happening when logged on from the office.  But last night and today I keep getting those warnings.  I'll keep an eye on it.

NoScript and Ghostery 'fix' Google nicely...

I use NoScript all the time, but am not familiar with Ghostery.   What does it do?

Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

I just installed the Ghostery add-on for IE and it crashed the buhjeesus out of it the first time.  Everything takes for EVER to load, and the only site that showed anything tracking me was the LeMons forum.  Very interesting...

There's your problem! *g*

Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

How about getting rid of the target="_blank"  attributes from the links to results/rules/etc? I hate being forced to inflict those on my readers (by editors who shall remain nameless), so it would be nice to rid the world of a few excess windows/tabs here.

I did that and got complaints about those links not opening in new windows.

And now we have come full circle.

I'm personally a fan of links opening in new windows but I always do a right click > open in new tab so I guess it doesnt matter much anymore.

Note that with Firefox, if you middle-click on a link, it automatically opens in a new tab.   No need to do the two-step right-click > open in new tab stuff.

This.  And when one window is filled with tabs, I open more windows and fill them with tabs too.  RAM is cheap smile

Wait 60 seconds between reporting spammers?

30 seconds between searching? If no hits on first search I gotta wait?

Please wait 5 minutes between questions...

Well, thanks for allowing us to put you on the spammers blacklist.

They just won't learn that we don't put up with that kind of thing around here.

If you see the same user spamming multiple threads its not so important to report everything. When we delete the offender the forum automatically deletes all their posts.

Those time limits are the default settings for the forum. I'll tweak them a bit.

Please.   It usually takes me three or four tries to get my search right.

Working on it. The best way to resolve the issue is to create a new user group for members with low count posts and leave them with higher wait times. I shortened the time from 30sec to 20sec.

The reason for the timer is if a hacker (or other miscreant) signed up and pounded the forum with queries it would crash. That is a much more aggravating condition than waiting a few seconds between searches.

WTF?   Why on earth would a properly written program crash just because there is a long queue of requests?   There are many ways to deal with that issue, depending on the mission requirements.

I hope you didn't write it, as I very much respect the effort you put into the forums.   I just get annoyed when I see software that doesn't survive in the real world.   I come from the real-time, mission-critical world, where failure is simply not an option -- 911 dispatch systems, gasoline refinery controls, missile telemetry, etc.   It just takes thought and design effort.
[/SoapboxRantMode]   smile

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, don't bother replying to this.   I just have to accept that today's programmers don't write code to those standards.   I'm a dinosaur.

NOW I understand why the Snipe hasn't taken the track yet...

You clearly need to lower your standards and frankly, I'm surprised how you've been able to get yourself to set butt in my cars! (/hijack)

You are absolutely right, but I just can't bring myself to do it.   I'm a slave to my basic nature.  smile

I've always rooted for the underdog, and your cars fit that description perfectly!   smile   You are also one hell of a great guy to work with, and an inspiration.

Now, to bring this thread back on track, I just noticed an interesting oddity with the forum software.   At least I think it is the forum software.   It appears to be British.   I used the word "humor" in a posting, and it was flagged with the squiggly red line as being misspelled.   But when I spelled it as "humour", it was OK.

Chris, is this the forum software doing it, or is it something on my own system (Ubuntu Linux 10.04.4 LTS, Firefox 11.0)?

That is a setting in your browser. The forum doesn't have a spell checker.

Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

The Open Office dictionary uses British spellings. It's your computer.

Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

I'm trying to set up a Rainmeter RSS skin that shows LeMons forum posts.   How often is the RSS feed updated?   Appears that it's not too often as the two newest posts are from about 6 hours ago.

That is a script that runs on the server side. There are no RSS options for me to change in the ADMIN panel. I have no idea what that is set for so unfortunately you get what you get with that one.

Re: Post your forum layout related questions or observations here

Not sure if appropriate or reasonable to ask, but searches of the forum aren't coming up with some of the older stuff. I have to go to google and click the "cached" in order to see anything of any vintage. I's it possible to set up an "archived" search function without the current formatting or something? There's some good information back there (re: the current nomex bra thread as an example of how old searches would help).

Is this a server space issue or?

I have been looking into an archive plugin for the forum. It doesn't have that as a normal feature.

If searches are not working I can do a reindex of the database. That should fix the problem. It will take some time and I have to kick all the users off to do it. I'll try to do it overnight one evening when it looks like there aren't many people online and I'm actually awake past 10pm eastern.
