Topic: Fuel cell rules. Teams with fuel cells please read

For 2013 we will be defining a fuel cell in the rules.

It must have these three components to be considered a fuel cell:

   1.  A purpose built fitted metal exterior case.

   2. An internal flexible or semi-flexible containment device inside such as a bladder.

   3  Full anti-splash internal foam.

If it doesn't have those things, it's not really a cell, regardless of what the manufacturer calls it when trying to sell it to you....

Plastic tanks, aluminum tanks, etc are not going to pass.

This is whether or not the cell is FIA rated.   An FIA rated cell doesn't require a fire wall between it and the driver, all other cells do.

This isn't really a new rule, when we say 'Fuel Cell' we always meant just that, a real cell.   This will just be defining what we mean and enforcing it.

So, you will have to have a stock tank in stock location or a real fuel cell.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'll answer as quickly as I can.

As in all my pre-new-rule posts, this is not yet official until the rules are posted, but is very likely to happen...      Waivers will not be granted on fuel issues.

The cell I have ( just bought it)  is a Polyethylene inner tank with a steel outer shell. The cell carries an SFI 28.1 certification. Is this cell legal?  (it's a 2012 JAZ cell)

I'm sure you know the price of FIA cells, and I am very serious about  fire safety in my cars, but SFI has to carry some weight  regarding certification in racing I mean, they do all the other safety gear certs in the USA (belts, suits, window nets etc)

If it has foam it is legal.

Can a plastic bladder + metal shell tank (like jczoka mentioned above) be made legal (but still require a firewall) if filled with foam purchased separately?  Like this stuff: http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part … m-Inserts/

What's next? This?

Or has it simply just come to something far less selective!

Ok... Sorry to take the thread off topic but I can't seem to find any recent threads on a rule change for Kill Switches... What was the change?

1. That looks like enough steel to support the Bismark. except its sunk, so that reference is, ah, not very relevant. The Alabama! Yes that's its, enough steel to support the Alabama.

2. That appears to me to be a fully compliant FIA "real" fuel cell with metal (Steel or Aluminum) case, inner bladder and foam filled?

It's all .120 or .090.... You know what it did to the car?  The ass end got so stiff and predictable all of our drivers can drift that beast at 70mph. Total weight off set from removing the old system and installing the new system was 38lbs. It needed it. And it fixed the aero drag the open trunk was causing. No strut braces on this pig. The bulkhead you show in the pic you will notice it is right over the shock mount and upper coil bucket.Plus the upper panhard bar mount got a good dose of beefness from the cell cradle.

It was a Win, Win, Win, Win deal.

Thanks!  We didn't do it alone... All the Lemons crew guided us.... well... Pushed us in the right direction. If you do it don't think they won't  kick you to make sure it's a quality job with quality stuff. Prepare for some hard times if you don't. Notice the fuel filler, lines and sender all share ONE penatration? I think this cell is about the bare min they will help you along with. Otherwise, well I don't know. PLEASE get started with a good cell and a detailed plan.... Then ask for suggestions from them.
