1972 Mercedes 280SE 4.5
I bought this thing as a beater project a year ago and spent over $2,000 getting it roadworthy and running properly, which it does. No mean feat for a 1972 car with factory electronic fuel injection (triggered by points, no less!)
Lots of new parts. New battery. Previous owner put a full stainless dual exhaust on it.
Unfortunately, I managed to lose the title before I could transfer it into my name, and since there's rumors that the organizers want to see more V8 Benzes in this mess, here it is for $500. Come fetch it out of my parents' yard. They'll love you. They'll cook you dinner.
The car has a brand spankin' new set of whitewall tires on it which I paid $400 for. No joke, the tires have less than 200 miles on them. Since wheels and tires are considered a safety accessory and exempt from the price limits I am offering them as optional equipment for the $400 I spent on the tires.
That would be $900 total. I will even throw in the remanufactured water pump I ordered just in case.
Power steering pump could use a rebuild, apart from that it's tip-top.
Should be easy to recoup costs selling trim & interior spares off of it, too.

Also selling a virtually rust-free '86 Toyota cargo van project...

Yep, cost of tires doesn't apply to the 500 bucks if they're sold separately. This car is virtually guaranteed a low-sweat passage through the BS inspection, anyway. Come on, Roten Sau theme, V8 power, plenty of stuff to sell off, and you'd be the heroes of the race- finish in the top third and you'd be a powerful IOE contender. Someone jump on this deal!

Anyone?
Alright, I'll make a ridiculous deal even more ridiculous.
Buy both the Mercedes and the '86 Toyota van for $500 each and I'll throw in the tires.
$1000 total. For everything. It's complete madness.
There's even a bunch of weird parts in the van from other things that I'll include. How about an original factory 1974 AMC Matador AM/FM/CB radio? Taillights for an '81 AMC Concord? A working purple G3 iMac? It's all in there. Come get it.
I want to be shod of this stuff by the end of the month and it's important to me to see it go towards folks with enthusiasm. You know, as opposed to Miller Compressing.

Roten Sau! Roten Sau! I guarantee that you'll have way more fun running the Benz than you would with LeMons Mustang #492 or LeMons E30 #821. The IOE race is getting tougher all the time, so you'll need a heavyweight like this to compete.
And that van- it's a mid-engined handling machine, with Toyota reliability! Like an MR2, but way cooler looking. And check it out- great racing heritage!

Why aren't any of you guys near me?!?!?

AAAAUGH! It's killin' me that nobody is taking that Benz!

Early Bosch Jetronic fuel injection? Does it come with a live-in electrical engineer? Maybe you can win IOE by pushing it into the paddock...

Sheesh, just rig up an adapter plate on the intake and use a Quadrajet. Problem solved!

For what it's worth the system in the Benz is so overbuilt that there's very little that goes wrong that can't be fixed through a few hours of attention with some emory cloth. And I've already done that part.
Come on! Somebody make me an offer!
I'll even do custom vinyl layouts for your team. Getting them cut is another story, since I don't have a plotter/cutter yet, but at least you can get pro graphic design without paying for it.
What else can I offer? A dang shoeshine?

Stupid question: is the car drivable? Like, ACTUALLY "you'll probably make it home without dying" drivable? (home is in Ohio)
Offline
The car is completely drivable. I'd keep some extra power steering fluid handy and be sure to lubricate the throttle linkage before you go (it tends to stick at WOT if it sits for a while, which gets interesting, but easily rectified by a shot of WD40 or PB).
Other than that, it's 100% ready for the road mechanically.
This was intended to be my 2009 BA/BE Rally car. The title thing flummoxed me at the last minute.
Here is ACTUAL PROOF that it is drivable.

No, it's way too nice to spend years as a back-burner project in someone's back yard, then get towed to The Crusher. Time for it to start its second career as a glorious race machine!

Tim, I'm glad you're not closer, I need more projects like I need a hole in the head but that benz is just too sweet.
Someone needs to take this thing off your hands already. If I had time and a trailer I'd probably come get it and just DD the darn thing.

Incidentally, RockAuto just sent me a handy little list of wholesale clearance parts for the Mercedes...

I'm with Murilee. Someone needs to get this. Fear of early Jetronic? Bah. These LeMons kids can make Spica run, for Pete's sake.
And that van in the video looks like a Mitsubishi. What you're looking for is this:

I will also consider partial trades of parts and/or parts cars.
I need a radiator and fan clutch assembly and some other bits for a grey-market '86 BMW 528i. My brother hit a deer with his and we're putting it back together.
I also really need a decent set of wheels and tires for my 1994 Volvo 960 wagon; in fact, I could use a complete 960 with working climate control for parts since my fuse box is all melty. If it's a job you want to help me with I'll count your labor towards the trade as well.
While we're at it, I've got a '77 MGB with a flaky Zenith Stromberg carburetor that could do with an upgrade. If any of you are old hands with those and have the parts and knowhow to help me upgrade to twin SU's or something, I'd be interested.
I also have friends that are intent on fielding a team in the Chicago-area LeMons race next year but they have no interest in the Benz or the van. They demand a stick shift and a car shape. Again, I am encouraging them to find a 5-speed Volvo, turbo or not, but consideration will be given to whatever you've got.

I betcha the Blitzen-Benz dudes can find a 4-speed out of an R107, cheap. That's what they used in that chopped 300E. You want their contact info?

As first timers they're more concerned with finishing than with the Index of Effluency. Meaning they're shopping for the most reliable thing they can get their hands on that isn't a Toyota (see? they're not totally dull!)
Still, your proposal is intriguing and that 300E is one of the most amazing LeMons contraptions I've seen yet. If there was an Index of Badassery they probably would have won it. Let's have that contact info. I'll go pour twenty bucks worth of Smithwick's down one of my friends' necks and see if we can't make something happen.

Remind your friends half the battle is getting accepted. Here you have been told this car is a garunteed "in" as opposed to something reliable which will have them sitting on a waitlist.
