Topic: CorVegge: So Cal $3500 complete or $4K without motor

Yes, you could be the next owner of a 77hp Corvette (Dyno-verified at Thunderhill). While it's not the only diesel Corvette in existence, I'm pretty sure it's the only one running on WVO (Waste Vegetable Oil).

It's entered 2 events (3 if you count upcoming Chuckwalla), but we haven't dedicated enough energy into making it flawless yet. But it's pretty darned close. Stupid crap like adequate coolant flow and ancillary belt alignment have caused the hiccups. If I were the type of person who could stay focused on a single car and optimizing it for a full year, I would do an alignment and lower it back to normal stance, look to run a taller final drive and keep the th400 automatic (dyno says about 142 ft lbs of torque but it's all down at 2K rpms). Maybe put a shift kit in it. Others have suggested to put a saginaw 3-spd in it.

It's got a bunch of new parts on it like fancy brake discs, performance pads, good tires, new belts, heat exchanger to pre-heat the veggie oil, and then 6 extra wheels, Kirkey intermediate road seat, etc. Best thing about it is it's got an Evil Genius Racing cage installed by them. I asked them to build an SCCA and NASA legal cage so the chassis could go to someone outside of LeMons and it could then get some real HP behind it. It's not stamped yet because John says he can't tech a car that isn't to full SCCA spec (it needs a fuel cell and fire bottle) but he will tech it for one of the other groups after it is fully prepped.

It's just a 1-tank system since we're a SoCal team and cold startups on veggie oil aren't exactly our concern. No hose-in-hose or anything like that. Just a firewall mounted heat exchanger and a second one at the fuel filter head. It seems pretty straightforward to make it a 2-tank setup (small 1-3 gallon diesel for startup and purging) but it's far easier to drain the tank and dump a few gallons of diesel in it to warm up the engine and then just dump your veggie oil into the tank after 20 min or so. Or heck, just run it off diesel if you're a wimp.

All indications thus far are that it's burning ~ 4 gal/hr of veggie oil on track. We used about 3gal/hr at Buttonwillow when we were all ginger-footing it just to take 5 laps a piece in it, it's very first outing. With a 20 gallon stock tank, you can turn 5+ hours stints.

Engine is an Olds 350 diesel. I've got a second 350 diesel longblock with heads removed. Needs a going through.

I understand according to the interwebs that the 350 diesel can just have the heads swapped, a gas intake manifold and carb put on, and a dizzy put where the diesel vacuum pump is and the engine becomes an 11:1 gas motor. But do your own research (don't believe a word I've written, essentially). Would be a shame to undo all the diesel/veggie stuff, but the new owner can do what he/she wishes.

I'm willing to sell it as a package deal for $3500 and include a seat at the Chuckwalla season ender. Give me a $550 deposit (to cover the race expenses) and I'll hold it for you to decide until after you've driven it. If you come help prep it before the race, tow it to the track for the race etc. we can talk about dropping the overall price.

If you absolutely must own it prior to the race so you can field it with your own team, we can work out a purchase price adjustment for that, too.

I'm hesitant to sell this. Especially since it hasn't fallen into IOE consideration yet. I'm stuck this year with no IOE and I know I'm stupid for selling it prior to having given it a chance for earnest consideration. But I also realize I'm being a bit of a hypocrite for telling folks not to worry about winning and just go out and have fun yet I hunt for another IOE. The other truth is I (like Speedy) have 4 IOEs and for either of us to win another we have to do something completely earth shattering (take note: Speedy is building a friggin' PLANE!) . I suspect if the CorVegge were fine-tuned and fielded by someone other than me or Speedy, it would get noticed again for its IOE potential.

I'd need to work out how to title it, though. Oh man: How valuable would a Smog Exempt Corvette title be in California!?!

Re: CorVegge: So Cal $3500 complete or $4K without motor

This car is a beauty in person, unlike the heaps we bring that only look good in long distance photos. It could be made to be a real runner. IOE cars are becoming more frequent in the series (which I think is awesome), and efforts have to be Herculean at most races to pull one off now. We're talking total pile, or top ten in a mediocre car.

Spank, I hate to see you sell it, but I suspect that like me, you have more cars than you can afford. Good luck with the sale.

Speaking from my brief experience, it handles surprisingly well and once you get all 3 hamsters under the hood all headed in the same direction it rolls along pretty good.

Yep, we built a very good cage into this car.  It will pass most any spec.   The tub and cage are worth quite a bit more than this.  Spank paid a pretty penny for the cage.

This would be a great candidate for a group buy, pony express type cross country trip.  Which I'd almost be interested in participating in if I were still on the east coast.  But fortunately, I'm on the left coast now, at the point of departure..

Re: CorVegge: So Cal $3500 complete or $4K without motor

This summer I was on the left coast for a few weeks and spent a few days helping Spank get the Cor-Vegge going. As has been said - the cage and chassis are first rate. This car is done roght and has tons of potential. BTW - the Veggie oil heating system is "Hong Norrth" rated. It was fun putting heat exchanger Pre heater in the Vette.

Bumping this from page 3.

Quite a few people put a lot of time and even their own money into this thing. And it wasn't my "typical build".

I set out to do everything differently in the hopes I'd have a different outcome from typical (ie no thrashing at the track).

1) I build it at someone else's house because people always say "if you were closer I'd help.". Cheseroo was a dedicated helper as was the teammate, Todd.
2) Had it professionally caged (because I didn't want to be responsible for a subsequent owner's safety once real power got under the hood)
3) Went with American iron (plastic?)
4) Went with a motor swap...
5) ...Which was a V8
6) ... that was diesel
7) but used Alt Fuel
8) powering through an automatic
9) Spent lots on new, budget exempt parts like ujoints, wheel bearings, brakes.
10) Even sold off stuff from car to fund some new rear end bushings and new head gaskets, new water pump.

Result? Same outcome as my last 2 "typical builds": 12 hours of straight thrashing at the track before taking the track at just about midnight.

So basically I know what needs to be replaced to make it more successful: Me.

What was then atypical was we made improvements between race 1 and race 2:  Redid the exhaust. Rerouted the fuel supply lines and doubled up on fuel pumps. Replaced transmission cooler lines. Installed an oil cooler (and a power steering cooler at the track).

Oh, and what probably adds the most value to the car is Lauri. He's 91 (maybe 92 now?) and rebuilt the injector pump for $40. Super nice guy. Met him when I responded to a craigslist ad for a 6.2 diesel (that I bought as backup and later passed on to another fellow).  Learned he was a full time machinist until he was 84. And his much-younger wife henpecks the living crap outta him. Still has all his wits about him. And I feel so much richer for having simply met the man.

It's actually very quiet even though it has zero mufflers.  I will admit to purposely trying to run directly under the flagstand in an effort to 1.  Blow up the flagman's skirt and 2.  See if they'd notice.  I think I failed on both accounts.  There was a fair bit of teeth gnashing prior to tech about the pipes.  It went to tech with the pipes not welded together and kind of mocked up as to what it would look like once it was put together.  I think Jay realized it just looked too cool and let it go on that basis.  I don't see another exemption happening for something running on gas rather than veggie oil.  After driving it, I would say that this thing has a lot of potential still left in it.

Still available. In fact, I don't even have enough drivers to warrant bringing it to Chuckwalla.

Seats available for Chuckwalla and if you like it we can work a final sals price rhat works for everyone.

He went with what was behind curtain #2 apparently even before seeing it. I guess the CorVegge's reputation does indeed precede it!

Still available.

Re: CorVegge: So Cal $3500 complete or $4K without motor

It has now (dec 19, 19 2012) done 3 events, sorta. Chuckwalla proved that the fiddly power steering pump alignment was easy to fix as it posed no problem all weekend thanks to careful prep by both Chris and Jim. The fueling "burps" we were getting were tracked down also during prep to a pinhole leak in the metal pickup tube in the tank. Fixed that and didn't cause any fueling issues.

The sole remaining issue is the cooling system was getting pressurized from a weak head gasket (or possible crack in a head?). Car would run fine if the driver didn't try to floor it, but anything over half throttle would see the radiator burp out the overflow. We just rigged up a catch bottle inside the car and when it pushed out about half a gallon of water, we would bring it in, open it up, dump it back in, and send out the next driver. I didn't want to deal with pulling a motor to change the head gaskets, even though I had new ones on hand. Technically, it was an "extra" car and I didn't have a team of drivers for it, so everyone just got some joy rides and I called that good enough.

Anyway, it has ARP head studs thanks to a generous benefactor with connections at ARP, and I'm sure judge phil would allow a low enough residual foryou to put some Cometic head gaskets on it. Or you could go with the Victor Reinz ones I have already.

Hell, do what Anton wants and put some +.100" thick gaskets on it and ghettocharge it. Because if it sits around here past March, I can't see reason enough for me to NOT do that.

So price is $3500 complete as it sits and comes with 4 spare wheels and old tires and 2 bare spare wheels, another 2 injector pumps (one works, the other is frozen) a motor with the heads removed, 3 cylinder heads, gaskets, another starter, stock corvette rear exhaust/mufflers. Rubber is all still good, trans and engine were strong. Tilt/telescoping column has a loose wiggle to it and some would want to replace that column, but it's functional and safe enough.

If you'd rather not have the diesel engine(s) and want to put your own drivetrain in it, price is $4K. Why more? Because you think I want to keep those motors around here?! And I've have to pull the engine/trans out of the car.

I can perhaps help with short distance tows after the new year.

Re: CorVegge: So Cal $3500 complete or $4K without motor

I wonder what the Land Speed Record is at El Mirage or Bonneville for diesel motors of this displacement? You certainly put a cage good enough for most types of racing, and I can't think of a better car aerodynamically that a motor of this type would fit in.

The aluminum arrow shaft you used for a pickup had a leak?

Nope, the actual metal tube that's part of the lid and that leads to the arrow shaft (former place of in-tank stock fuel pump) is what had a pinhole.
