Topic: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

I bought a CRX with an Autopower cage in it, and wanted to know (a) if you guys think the door bar it comes with is sufficient to be safe (as distinct from "strictly within the bounds of the rules") and (b) is it within the bounds of the rules?

It's an Autopower bolt-in cage that looks like this:

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

Yeah, that door bar will work, though once you've bolted it in place we recommend welding it as well. Also, double door bars are likely in the Lemons rules future--something to keep in mind.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

We raced a Fiero at Reno-Fernley (Fiero) with a single door bar and I have to say I'd like to have two.....there can be a real bumper height mismatch in these cars....I'd hate to have been T-boned by the Chevy 1/2 ton or '67 Fury...

Thanks Nick!  If I do weld it, should I well all of the bolted joints?  And is it likely to pass tech without being welded?  (I know it's ultimately up to the discretion of the tech inspector.)

Jim, that's a good point, especially as like most CRXes this thing is just about sitting on the ground.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

It should pass tech using the included bolted sleeves. Welding all of the bolted joints certainly won't hurt, but is not currently required.

On the double door bars...

Are you thinking this:

OK, so now with the two-door bars mandatory...  Does the top picture pass muster?  The bottom bar is run along the door sill.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

That's actually where you want the lower bar, to keep the sill from buckling and prevent a low-entry by any protruding object.  That's really a pretty decent design.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

I have done this for the last couple cars I caged including our Lemons car.  I'm a fan of X door bars for rigidity and I couple it with a low bar along the rocker for additional side impact strength.  You can even run a few tabs between the low bar and the rocker for additional strength.  You just have to keep seat and harness mounting in mind when you fit the low bar.  We finished our seat/slider setup before even looking at the door bars to make sure there was elbow room.

Here is a shot halfway through the door bar install.  Note that the X is actually bent outwards several inches for elbow room.  We get most of the clearance of NASCAR bars with the most of the rigidity of X bars.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

Neat!  That door bar setup might be a bit much for a CRX, as it's tough enough climbing in there over one bar.  I'll see, though.  I should probably find a fabricator in Columbus as I'm running on empty for time already without adding to the roll cage.

(My evil ugly swap has tons of troubleshooting left..)

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

Rob builds some great cages, but i would like to see the answers from Nick on the door.  we are bolting in a cage in the Miata and adding a door bar, so if Rob's design works, then the bolt in with added door bar should be fine too.  On the bolt in, the bottom bar runs close to the floor.

To be more specific, is this okay?

EDIT:  It's legal (I think).  Thanks...

For those of you with an Autopower or Kirk bolt-in 6 point cage, I bet you can add a 2nd door bar low on the driver side with just a few feet of straight tubing,  no bends required.  Notch with your hand held 4" grinder and find a welder.

That's exactly what I'm hoping to do.

Re: Roll cage question - Autopower door bar sufficient?

For anyone (attending the fall race at CMP) that is having issue with installing the 2nd door bar because you don’t have a welder, there are plenty of people who would be willing to help you.  Out of almost 100 teams, I’d guess at least half have a welder and a team member who can weld.  If you can’t find anyone, just have the bar ready to install (cut and notched to fit) and stop by our pit and I’ll weld it for you.

Generally speaking, the racing community as a whole is very helpful to one another.  Even teams who are racing against you for the win are willing to help if you ask.  Heck, in our case (Team Dorifto Dogs E30) sometimes even if you don’t ask.  At the spring race at CMP, we had corded two front tires and were sitting in 2nd place at the end of day one.  The Schumacher Taxi team was pitted near us and overheard and offered us two tires for a beer.  Mind you they were in 6th place at the time and had no real incentive to help us at all.  They were just a good bunch of guys showing top-notch sportsmanship to a fellow group of racers.  Had they not offered us those tires it's possible we would not have won.  Our hats are off to you guys, and again thank you very much.  If you need anything that we can provide at the upcoming fall race, please don’t hesitate to ask.
