Topic: Would this car be a pain to cage?

http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/4684341277.html

I freakin love this car. I am 6'1", and my drivers are the same, if not an inch or two taller. Would this thing be a pain to cage? I've only ever been inside a convertible, so i don't really have anything to go off.

Re: Would this car be a pain to cage?

I'm guessing so. The one that races in the midwest extends the cage outside the roof.

Fourteen time loser. You'd think I'd know better by now.

As the picture Maverick posted, Exo cage is your best bet.

Your two biggest challenges are going to be finding intact metal to weld the spreader plates to and leaving a big enough openning for ingress and egress.

I was thinking the same thing.  As soon as a welder gets close to it that it might turn to rust dust.  That car sure looks bound for your local scrapper.

"Rust in the usual places" on an MG = The entire car.

Has anyone raced something with wire wheels yet?

MGB is a unibody car so sill condition gonna be very important..  No sills, no dice.

Re: Would this car be a pain to cage?

The typical Dirt-Track method is to cut off the entire roof with a saw-zall. Build the cage. Weld the top back on. We did exactly this with a MGB-GT set up for vintage racing. Can't even tell the top has been cut. As far as size... I am 6'-4", 325lbs. I can just fit into a stock MGB-GT. Do the Exo-Roll Cage , You'll be fine

We have some friends that did an exo-cage to accommodate their 6'-7" driver in a Geo Metro, Worked out great!

Re: Would this car be a pain to cage?

On our Corvair, after the cage was welded in, we removed the floor and welded a subframe in the hold the seat. We welded the subframe back into the rockers and added full cross bracing (dash bar, rear horizontal bar, etc.) to replace the floor material, Dzus or bolt new floor around seat. Lowered helmet height about 4" (could be more if needed).

That also gets you some "uber cheaty" subframe connectors. [shifty eyes]

One of three Corvairs in existence with a floor...any floor.

Re: Would this car be a pain to cage?

If you can live without seat sliders, that will gain you a few inches. If all your drivers are about the same height. Bolt it right through the floor, use big, thick washers (2.5" just like the belts) and GR8 bolts.
