Topic: Looking for NJMP video (Found)

Hey,

One of our novice(i guess we are all novice) drivers went off and hit the wall in turn 12 around 1:45 on Sunday.  We are looking to any video of the incident so we can make sure it doesn't happen in the future.  It is car number 496.  I have some photos  of the race I'll post in this thread a little later once they are off the camera.  They are probably bad though.

Thanks.

EDIT: Found it thanks

Did you see what happened/ Were they near our car at the time?  Or do you just know they had video?

I talked to them Sunday and they said they had video running. I didn't see what happened. I wasn't in the car on Sunday, that was our driver Craig. If I talk to him, I'll see if he saw anything.

Yeah, we had front and rear cams going.  (suspension cam too, but i'm sure that didn't catch the incident!)

It'll be a day or two before we look through all our videos (unpacking tonight) but we'll see if i can find anything for you.

What make/model was it again? Craig saw a few cars off track but didn't get a good look at the numbers.

It was a gray Ford Escort GT with yellow strips and "student driver" written on the back.  It was running a massive wing but it broke off when a driver hit it on the wall of the pit garage.

...which was hilarious. Just left a bit of yellow paint and a dent on the aluminum siding.

Sorry..He didn't see the incident. I am sure someone will have it on video. I get annoyed at myself because I have a GoPro but keep forgetting to install it in the car.

It is funny, but it also hurts because I spent like 10+ using a router to cut it out of MDF...

Re: Looking for NJMP video (Found)

We were about 3 turns back from it but don't have it on video.  It happened at 1:36 according to our clock if that helps anyone else narrow down their search.

Make your own judgement about what happened, but it looks to me like he got passed on the inside, and probably got spooked by it, moved to the outside, hit the beginning of the outside curbing hard, and lost it.

Thanks that's perfect and exactly what I was looking for.

Your description is right,  he did get spooked by someone passing on the inside.  He lost it on the curbing and then tired to save it which was a mistake.  He over corrected and ran into the wall.  That's basically what the driver said, but I wanted to see if for myself.  To the other novices out there make sure to go two feet in if you start to loose it.

Re: Looking for NJMP video (Found)

Hope your driver was ok after that.

There were a handful of cars that seemed to do the same.

How'd the orange beetle fair? I saw pictures of the barrier shaped front end after. That driver ok I hope?

That was a tough corner for the weekend.  The orange bug driver was back driving on Sunday and said he felt good, thank God for HANS.  Our car broke a lower control arm on that corner and spun as well, but fortunately didn't hit anything.

He was fine.  Had a bruised knee from it hitting the dash but that's all.

I'm curious about how/why that happened?  Does the driver sit right on top of the wheel?  Is the dash bar too close?

I will need to talk with him to know for sure.  I do not think he hit it on the dash bar because that is too far away.  We bought our car from another team and they had added a sheet metal dash to cover up the rats nest of wires and to mount gauges.  He could have hit this or the steering column with his knee(it was the right knee).  He is a taller guy so that might have played a role in it too.

I know for a fact that he was not in an unsafe seating position.  The front panel of the dash (with the switches, kill, starter ect) is a full arms length away when belted in and the wheel is 3/4 of an arms length.

I wasn't being critical, I'm just curious as we all want to be safe, and if I can learn something that might prevent something happening in our car I want to do it.  All our aftermarket gauges and switches are mounted in a separate panel offset to the right of the driver so the knee area is clear as seen here:

Ya its no problem.  I really like the center switch panel setup.  On the next car I plan to make something like this.  The NJMP race and our crash has given me a lot of ways to improve our overall safety.  I think we are going to go with a full containment seat in the future and we need to work on a better fueling solution so we do not spill as much.

I love that panel, but with the current discussion of what his leg hit, you might want to pad the left side of the panel.  Maybe it is just the angle of the photo, but the support appears to be near the driver's side of the trans tunnel, which could lead to your right leg hitting it on a right side impact.
