Topic: HREW tubing for cage?

Question regarding tubing types. We realize that DOM is preferred over ERW. Our cage builder is quoting and prefers us to use HREW 1.75" x .134 wall thickness. Some sites say HREW is the same thing as ERW, but I'm afraid of being turned away if the judges disallow HREW. Other sites say HREW is closer to DOM than to ERW. I suspect the answer here will be to demand DOM from our builder, and we may do that, but just wanted to hear from the experts regarding HREW.

Re: HREW tubing for cage?

IMO at this point in Lemons history with new safety rules being added yearly it may be only a matter of time before DOM is the requirement (as it is in all other series).  It would be foolish to spend the money on a non-DOM cage.

Re: HREW tubing for cage?

It's all ERW (Electric Resistance Welded).
(The other type of tubing is called seamless, which is extruded from a solid billet and contains no weld.)

HREW is Hot Rolled Electric (Resistance) Welded. All shapes over ~0.065" thickness are hot rolled material.

DOM (Drawn Over Mandrel) is HREW that is cold drawn over mandrel after welding. This removes the weld flash from the inside. The cold finishing gives closer tolerances and better welding properties.

Just some info on the differences... None of which matters if the rules change to allow only DOM.
