For all you early arrivals I have a question. When do you  get there and what time are the gates normally open on Thursday?

The line will be very long when the gates open. Get there early.   

The good news is there is plenty of room..

It depends if and what is going on on Thursday. At the spring race we waited by the gate until the team practicing left. Last fall they told us we couldn't be in until 5, but let us in long before that.

Not sure if others got the shake down from the front gate, but last year we arrived early Friday morning (4:00am or so), and were told we needed to pay $20 for camping.

Is there any benefit to arriving Thursday night (aside from a fun time) vs early Friday? It doesn't seem like inspections begin until noon anyways.

That's normal. Thursday night is the track's thing, the rest of the weekend is the Lemons camping fee.
