Re: CMP - Post race

The Brickmobile will now be re-themed.  Sadly, I made a change to the rear mounting point, which required a change to the diagonal bar.  I did not get that change correct, which caused it to snap and let the back of the wing slam down on the roof.  Yea, it let go at the fastest part of the track, just past the kink.

After that, the LF gave us fits the rest of the weekend with both tires and brakes failing.

Somehow through all that we still managed to finish P21, and I spent the last 45 minutes in a duel with my great friend Fritz Dahlin.

Once all the memories of this race fade, I hope to remember the speech Jay gave Saturday night.  I hope we all do.

Re: CMP - Post race

I stopped by the Austin garage Saturday night to compliment their driving. They have great awareness and aren't afraid to "race" faster cars when it's not the right time to point someone by. Very courteous and fun to be on track with.

Re: RX7 fire. The two guys removing the hood were my drivers. We happened to be sitting near pit out all weekend and when they saw smoke they immediately ran to your car. I only saw the huge white cloud while on track. My guys were a little surprised how many hood pins you have smile

We also had a great view of the Questies wheel wobbling and falling off. There seemed to be a lot of "lost wheels" at this race. Questies still had the studs in place but others came in sheared off. That yellow EGT was FAST.

The Supra that was part of the kink accident was not Hong Norrth, but rather the very similar looking later model Supra. For the first time in several races (different organizations) my car came home with no new dents. I drove for 6 hours this weekend and saw a few incidences of "aggressive driving", but I imagine that some of my driving may also have seemed aggressive to newer drivers. Most cars that I passed were very respectful and actually took the time to give point-bys, even in places where i wouldn't take my hand off the wheel smile

Hong Norrth had a great weekend despite a few challenges. My first driver got a black flag early for PUY dropping us from 6th to 45th, then my other driver got another Black flag at which point we were told a 3rd would mean being Saran-Wrapped to the top of the car. The coolant temp gauge was wonky all day and kept our pace conservative. When I got into the car for the last stint something was seriously wrong with the right rear suspension (very loud clunk on any bump). I used trial and error to find the smoothest line around CMP for 2 hours and we ended the day in 6th with the engine literally running on fumes.
The suspension problem turned out to be a rear crossmember bushing that disintegrated. Three hours later we "rebuilt" the bushing with freeze plugs, a rubber exhaust hanger, window weld, and two 4" square patches cut from a kart tire. The car only gets 2 hours on a tank at less than full race pace so we spent Sunday driving reasonably fast and dropped from 3rd to 5th OA in the last hour when we weren't able to run with the Coronas and Irritable Dads.

I love Lemons racing.

Re: CMP - Post race

Many thanks to all of you for not hitting the electric car. We didn't know that it was going to be that slow when we started, but everyone seemed to be dealing with the rolling chicane really well, and we were only running 3-lap stints, so we kept going out. If we bring it back, then it will be faster. Jay told us that if we couldn't go 70 MPH, then he couldn't let us out on track again, so we've got a new goal.

Everybody grab your brooms, it's shenanigans!

My apologies, I made an 'ass'umption when they said the TRD Supra, oops.

I only saw you racing, nothing crazy or unduly aggressive, you guys always drive clean and quick and its a pleasure being around you on track.

My interpretation is that the 580SX took itself out. They were driving INCREDIBLY aggressively and tried to go four wide in the straight. I saw them go to do it and actually said out loud "They're about to go over their stupid quota for the day..."

About a second after I said that, they cut left very hard to get on the line and affectively PIT maneuvered themselves. Short of everyone else just pulling over and letting them go, the 580SX accident was the fault of the driver.  I *think* the Nissan Maxima(Altima?) with the light bar was the car that did the contact, but I'm not 100% sure. There are teams which can cut in and I feel comfortable with because I know they know where the edges of their car are. Our Lady of Perp. Downforce for example can cut within an inch of me and I don't flinch. But I think the 580SX driver just misjudged the length of their car by about 2 feet.

Thanks for the reply.  I only have one side of the story as you know, and of course there was more to it than that, which is why I'd love to see a video if anyone has it.  One question though, if he cut left, why was all the damage on the his right side, and none on the left?  As understand it, he didn't hit a wall or anything.

.                                 I was one of the drivers of the #911 Maxima. As far as I can tell, we never made contact with any car the whole weekend. There aren't any kind of scuff marks or dents on our car? What time did the accident occur? During my stints, I did my best to give everyone plenty of room on the track. My last turn on Sunday afternoon, I saw some of the most aggressive driving I have ever seen at a Lemons race. It reminded me of my dirt-track days.

Re: CMP - Post race

Team SOB had a blast this weekend not suffering another soul-crushing breakdown with a VW.
Yes, we sold out and took a year off to build an E30, but after 7 years of racing the Golf we were having a hard time locating functional VW transmissions in the tri-state area.  It was just time to move on.

The new car got off to a slow start with a black flag during Saturday parade laps.  Super Crew Chief Michael diagnosed the problem and rewired our transponder in 3 minutes flat; allowing us to re-enter the track as the green flag was being shown.  The car exceeded our expectations the rest of the Saturday; while we re-learned how to drive CMP in a rear wheel drive car.  1 black flag for a PUY (my fault) cost us some laps.   New team driver Mick did us proud by driving safe, fast, & clean.
Sunday started well, but the clutch master cylinder died halfway through the morning session, so our lap times suffered as we cruised around in 4th gear.  Super Crew Chief Michael again saved the day by changing the master cylinder and re-bleeding the system during quiet hour.
Special Thanks to Knoxvegas for loaning us their vacuum bleeder.  Super Crew Chief Michael was under the hood of our car giving the reservoir mouth-to-mouth in an attempt to pressure bleed the system until you loaned us the tool.  (quite funny to watch actually)

Our car came home with no visible scratches or dents, and I hope we didn't cause any problems for other teams on the track.  We did a lot of passing, but always try to do it in a controlled, predictable manner.

Props to the winning Done Racing AMX/Z3 guys... they had a beautiful car that they drove insanely fast.  You really must have your act together to get the overall win at one of these races and I have nothing but respect for anyone that can get it done.
Shout out to the IDS Miata and Monza who were both also flying around the track and keeping the pressure on.

BBQ was great as always, & I enjoyed seeing the CMP 'regulars' as well as meeting new folks.

We'll be back next year... see y'all then.

PS to Knoxvegas:  Your Mustang/Contour is definitely Class A now... I battled that car for over an hour throughout the weekend!  It's as fast as it is good looking.   Rock on!

Team For Parts Only had a blast at our first ever race.
As a lot of you already know from asking about it in the pits, we took over team SOB's little car and re-themed it to a Calvin and Hobbes theme.
We had some problems at tech, at which point the spirit of the 24 hours of Lemons kicked in. Our friends Duff beer let us borrow their welder and team SOB literally jumped into the trunk of the car to weld bigger spreader plates in. Big thanks to both teams for the help.
The Camden parade was super cool and we enjoyed looking at all the fantastic cars. We also got our tech signature and were good to go racing the next morning.
Having absolutely zero race experience I was in for a stressful 20 minutes after the green flag dropped. After the field sorted itself out a bit I found my groove and passed my first cars while trying to stay out of the way of faster cars. I had the best time I ever had in a car during my 2nd stint in the afternoon! All our drivers ran solid clean stints all Saturday and we found ourselves in 31st position. We were stoked and happy about how well everything went.
In the evening we noticed that our header flange had broken off, but again, the crowd came to the rescue. Craig came with his welder and had everything put back together in 5 minutes.
The BBQ was delicious, so was the shrimp boil. Thanks to Terminally Confused and NFS for feeding the crowds. We had a great time hanging out with various people, especially Kurt and Kyle and Sasha. The way everybody is friendly and open and helpful was amazing. Maybe the world should be more like Lemons.
Unfortunately we had to call it quits on Sunday after 3+ hours of trying to fix an overheating engine. I went out a few more times trying, but the temps wouldn't stay down.
We still won! We came out for the first time and were greeted with open arms by the crowd. We raced clean all weekend, not a single incident on track. And most of all, we were actually fast, Best time was 2:01 big_smile Other highlights were seeing one of our guys actually battling it out with team SOB for a few laps and for myself, overtaking the Knoxvegas Mustang/Contour (though it was looking unusually slow at the time) and driving away from it until I got stuck in traffic and had to let it pass again.
We hope to see you all again in the spring

Does anyone have any video of the last 30 lap battle for 3rd between the IDS Miata and the Squirting Corona's Mercedes?

We (the Corona's) had our GoPro die earlier in the day, and didn't get any footage of an epic battle that was over an hour.

If you were in a slower car, and happened to get passed by the Miata and Mercedes in quick succession (especially in the last 2 laps), could you please share the video clip with us?

I have some video of the last few laps, had no idea you and the Miata were racing for position as I was locked in a battle with the Burp e36 for the loftiness of 8th place. We got around the IDS Miata just after the beginning of the last lap and past your car through the last carousel. The image stabilizer pooped the bed on my Git2 so I have to run the footage through some software to clean it up some but you might find it interesting..

No need to apologize. I didn't take your comment as any kind of accusation. I'm not saying it didn't happen that way. I don't believe it did, but I suppose it's possible. What car were you driving?  We had a couple of rookie drivers, but neither one mentioned any contact with another car ( except one of them tried to blame his off-track excursion on someone rear-ending him, even though there were no marks). If the 580sx PITted itself against our car, it had to have been VERY loose already, because there were no marks on our car.  Maybe someone has a vid. We had a GoPro in our car, but I don't know if it still had a charge by then. I'll get the team Capt. to check it out ( he has the GoPro in Ga, I'm in Ms)

Re: CMP - Post race

EVR had a great time coming back to CMP. The parade was awesome and there were a lot of great cars to look at, new people to meet, and old friends to catch up with while drinking beer in the town square.

We finished off another head gasket in the first couple hours Saturday morning. We thought we had solved our detonation problem by recurving the distributor, but it turns out we only only solved part of it. At least this one took a little more than a full race to blow, as opposed to blowing in one hour. Lou Madsen, slant 6 guru extraordinaire with the '64 Valiant team, told us the extended-tip spark plugs we were using are really bad for creating hot spots and gave us a recommendation for new ones. We slapped a new head gasket on it, threw in some colder, non-extended plugs, and bumped up the carb jetting for good measure. We also found a small crack in the block, which we decided to ignore for the time being. (It only appears to leak when we're overheating and the system is pressurized.) Got back out on track for the last 10 minutes of the Saturday session, which felt awesome.

Big thanks to Terminally Confused and everyone else who made the BBQ happen. We had a blast hanging out with Idle Clatter and Fairlylame and whoever else made the mistake of wandering into the ongoing episode of everybody's favorite game show, Drink The Shot. I once again got to enjoy my car-owner's privilege of driving last on Sunday so I could sleep off all the bad decisions that were made that night.

Sunday we just drove our asses off. Really regretted not bringing any cool shirts. It was so hot out there that more than one of us pitted just to cool off and re-hydrate. We had no chance to compete after missing most of the Saturday session, so there wasn't a lot of pressure. Also discovered that the Dart is burning way more fuel than it used to. Maybe need to reconsider those bigger carb jets? Anyway, the track was a lot of fun and I had a great time dicing it up with the Fairlane and others even though we were fighting a soft brake pedal all weekend. I was pumping the pedal at every turn; my apologies to anyone if I almost ate it in front of you. Big thanks to our guest driver Jesse, who was fast and didn't break the car. No black flags for the team all weekend, either!

I really need to get around to welding up a traveling trophy for the Class of '64 Challenge that we can pass back and forth. We lost this round due to our head gasket trouble, but next time we meet we'll go for best out of 5!

Re: CMP - Post race

The Astro Van Space Shuttle incident went like this:

1. Fuel line pops off carburetor (yes, GM was still using carburetors in 1989).
2. FIRE! Not so visible outside the van because the engine is so far back, but still: FIRE!
3. Driver wisely decides to GTFO, pulls off the tarmac, stops, gets unstrapped.
4. Not so wisely, driver does not hit the kill switch or even the ignition switch.
5. Driver believes she is shifting automatic transmission into P, actually goes into R.
6. Driver leaves van, still running in spite of disconnected fuel line.
7. Van idles backwards across the track, causing much consternation, then craps out. Fire goes out. Nobody hits van.
8. Later, team fixes the fire damage, gets the van back into the race.

Re: CMP - Post race

Thanks, Phil.

I'll bet the cars coming down the back straight at the moment the van rolled across the track had several thoughts, none of which was amusement. GTFO was the right call for the driver - fire scares me worse than most everything else.

B&W Racing (one of the MANY red e36's, ours was the one with the fishbowl on the roof) had a fantastic weekend!  Ours is mostly a family affair... My wife, son (21) and daughter (18) race along with Tom and I as car "owners".   The parade was awesome as always.. every year there are many friends and familiar faces, but also amazing new entries that continue to inspire us in work and play.

During the first session on Saturday I was driving and managed to briefly get our car to the #1 position but kept trading places with Questies Racing in their awesome Fiesta.  The two of us had a blast with mostly me following with an occational lap in front.. it was a personal goal of mine to lead and least for a lap (only took 8 years).  The back and forth ended when Questies literally drove the wheels off the car..   Apparently the front left lug nuts worked themselves off or maybe broke the bolts... when they got the car to pit exit the wheel fell off and rolled into the grassy hill area... no harm done but very "Lemony"  smile

My daughter had a personal best lap this event as did my wife.  We only suffered two black flags (one PUY that was our mistake, and once when one of our drivers (I won't call her out but it wasn't my daughter) looped it in a cloud of dust in turn 12.  My son was happy as he never lost control and no black flags (in fact, no black flags for him in past three races).

With 30 minutes left in the race on Sunday I was at the wheel looking for a strong top 20 finish... when, true to form, we had an issue with the car... we broke a differential mount bolt and the rear end started to hop around like a jackrabbit wanting to tear up everything it could... we could not fix it in the 20 minutes we had left so did not finish.. a disappointment but still an fantastic weekend racing.

Re: CMP - Post race

I figured if I was going to call somebody out for a video of their screw up, it would be hypocritical not to post my own.  This is literally on my next lap after I was black-flagged for PUY.  Watching the video, I have no idea what my dumb ass was thinking I was going to do, if if I hadn't locked the brakes up.  But since I did lock the brakes, I slid into the #90 Mercedes and tagged them in the right rear.  The impact was very minor with just a broken marker light on our car (we keep ours street legal for 'testing' purposes) and no damage to the much heavier Merc.  You'll see I immediately headed to the penalty box before I was flagged to do so.  Judge Phil appreciated that gesture, and let me back out, where I drove clean the rest of the weekend.  I found the Merc team and apologized for my stupidity, and they were super cool about it.

Totally agree.  Raced another car down the straight in the last session and passed Austin Powerless into T1.  To my surprise, I heard a lockup and realized that AP must have some serious brakes and I turned down on them in T1.  Tried to wave 'sorry' the next time around.  The car may be 'slow,' but is well driven and can stop like a mofo.

Sorry for being a dick.  I wanted to come find you after the finish, but well..you guys won and all, so you were busy.  Just glad I didn't collect a class leader at the end of the race.  I really strive not to be a dick and haven't gotten a BF personally in 7 years of doing this.  I owe you a beer, or I'll clean your windshield or something.

Straight Outta Camden got a BF for brake lights stuck ON 2nd session on Sat.  That took me an hour to fix in Hell's Own Jungle Gym, upside down, standing on my head and working in a sea of white hot knives under our full dash to get at the brake switch.  Then we blew the headgasket.  Last two sessions on Saturday, I noticed our car was misting/smoking between T11 and T12.  The FCC thinks our HuyFong radios are way cheatier than Lemons thinks our car is (let's just say we knew about the spaghetti dinner before the fire department came by,) and failed (predictably,) so I just sat and watched, waiting for the imminent checker flag or flat tow.  The last 2.5 hours on Sat were run with no water. It was pressurizing the water jacket with combustion gasses...after the water was gone, we were running the world's only aircooled Honda with four wheels.

Last time it blew the engine at hour 6 and we swapped in a spare...which blew up 10 laps later.  This time, it ran all weekend on a BHG.

Black flags: One driver drove straight off T1 and self reported, one got railroaded by a BMW and spun coming out of T14 and self reported.

Other events:  I was driving in the first stint and shot through the fracas with the van, Crown Vic, Supra, and Ironman.  Whew.  https://youtu.be/GHFhDMh_8KY

All in all, a great weekend of racing.  After spending the last 5 years in "the other" series, it was great to come back to Lemons, where we aren't the only people sleeping in tents.  Anyway...better than the last time...we got A0 this time instead of 61 penalty laps for a bone stock D16 with cheapo Craigslist coilovers and a crunched header.  Judge Phil loves his Hondas, and who can blame him?  GI JOSE was the only other team I saw with dubious enough judgment to run a single cam Civic...we'll be looking for a B swap so we can get down to B0 like the rest of them.  wink

Special thanks to Curt, Craig and the rest of Terminally Confused for feeding us, and especially "3LCraig" for risking all of the places slag might go while welding in a kilt and fixing our roll cage, which failed tech for the first time since 2003 due to a pinhole on the top of the main hoop.

This is a truly special event and group of people....something to look back on and consider the good old days.  I'm proud to be a small part of it.

Re: CMP - Post race

Tyler,
Whomever your driver was on Sunday from around 1:00pm to 2:30pm, I had an awesome time racing him.  I was driving the #34 Honda Civic coupe.  It was all black like yours, with the headlights covered in red tape.  I had quite a long, and clean, battle with your car for a good long while.  Several times we ran literally side by side battling for position.  Your car/driver was probably a 1/10th or two faster than me in wide open track, but in traffic we were having a lot of fun battles.  It must have been a solid 30 minutes we were bumper to bumper.  The Terminally Confused car joined in the fun for a while, as did another Civic or two.  It was a Honda-fun-fest and I had a blast.
