Re: CMP - Post race

So here is a recap if that's what you want to call it from the Crx of death.  (That actually died). This was our second race in this car the first being Barber in Feb where we had zero mechanical problems and spent all the racing time on track other than our terribly slow pit stops.  This race was very different.  We had a major fuel leak in the beginning that took a radiator hose to repair so we would be able to spend more than 45 minutes on track at a time.  When during the first two hours we spent quite some time in first place thanks to Ben Dawson of team Winsome for being such a great driver and making my jalopy go fast.  I believe we still have the third fastest lap of the weekend.  None of us knew what the car was capable of up until that point.
We repaired a fuel leak,  swapped out roasted tires, tracked down an electrical gremlin causing the car to shut off, swapped out a destroyed rim on the right rear due to contact with the general wee.  We also developed a tiny pin hole in the oil pan due to a weld inside it coming loose and leaking a bunch of oil, nothing a little jb weld couldn't fix.  An axle boot tore and we had to build one new axle from two.  Blahh blahh blahh.  Lots and lots of time was spent repairing the car and sending her back out only to grenade the engine with 8 minutes left in the race.  No biggie it'll be fixed by Barber, nothing a little jb weld can't fix.

I personally had two incidents where another car got under my skin and ruffled my feathers.  One involving the bumble bee civic just kinda pushing and poking it's nose into every corner, which I found uncharacteristic for that team.  To me it looked dangerous so I just pulled out of the line and let him by.  Two or three corners later after the kink he sticks his nose inside again and slammed into someone causing three cars to go off track and I drive through the dust cloud smelling like a rose.  I just shook my head and rolled on.  ( Have it on film)

The other was some car that spun right in front of me in the kink.  I just remember not being able to pass them and getting myself worked up and feeling like they were kinda blocking in the turns leading up to the kink.  But it was probably and more likely me just not being fast enough to get by them.

The parade was great I was the guy dressed super gay on roller skates, my co driver was Lt dangle and my wife was another Cop.  We sure had fun, everyone seemed to like the track map on my hood.  I caught many conversations being had about the track and how to drive it while looking at my hood .

Thanks again for such a great weekend of racing!!!

Race Rambler's best race so far ever. Fought a coil that took us out of the race for about an hour and a half on Saturday but the rest was uneventful racing. Trying to catch the Marina on Sunday was fun, they dug themselves out from a 20 or 30 penalty lap situation for the class C win.

I had so much fun meeting all the folks from the interwebz I have chatted with and who had driven the Rambler across the country, the parade was awesome, and the BBQ party on Saturday night reminded me of some of the earliest Lemons races I attended on the west coast.

The Questie's (Escort) was great to drive.

I like how the spectator there is already calling for a jack and lugs to be delivered pronto.  We'll need someone just like that to torque the lugs a little tighter next time.

Any chance you were running new hubs when that happened, we think we have narrowed it down to that being the issue. The studs not being 110% fully seated in the hub..

No, we had 2.5"  studs. This was the caused by someone not torquing the wheel correctly.

Re: CMP - Post race

I drove for 2 teams, the #8 black and green camero and the #21 white 88 Thunderbird.  Drove the Camaro Saturday, after having driven the T bird last year.  The Camaro and I took a while to get acquainted, it was skittish hitting curbing and that's how blind folks like me drive.  I realized with maybe 2 minutes left in my stint to avoid the curbs, and things got simpler.  The Camaro ran fine all day, but I never got the confidence to really go after it.  I don't think I went full throttle more than a few times during my stints.

Late Saturday night, I was informed that I'd been traded to the T bird team, for 2 drivers and a driver to be named later.  The Bird was 5 laps out of first place and 1 lap out of second in B, IIRC.  I was to drive the 12:00-2:00 stint..  Morning session, Eric brought the car in maybe 3 laps down in first and maybe 2 down to second.  We knew we could beat the red Firebird (second place car) on pit strategy, as they could run for around 90 minutes.  My plan was to take it easy for a while and pace the firebird, which was the car directly in front of me at the start of the afternoon session. That plan lasted about 2 1/2 laps, as I felt like I was back with an old friend, and we were feeling pretty racey.  I passed on the back straight, IIRC, and was able to keep them back for a few laps.  I felt the tires scrubbing on the long right handers, and didn't want to use the tires up before the last stint, so I pointed the Firebird by and proceeded to lose him in traffic. Brilliant strategy!  I got feedback that the car was  never more than 30 seconds or so in front, so I didn't try to make time up.  As a matter of fact, probably dropped another tenth to save wear.  Drove the track for a while in mostly fourth, trying to pass the green neon after T1, see a yellow ahead, tap the brakes way too hard to avoid a black flag and get all squirrely.  Self report, hear how well we were doing from Judge Steve and he tells me to get back out there and keep looking ahead.

Unfortunately for my team, that was all she wrote.  I believe we finished second in B, 2 laps down to the red firebird, which was well driven and faster than you'd think a V6 4th gen would be.

There were many times I'd wished there was a camera on board, got to see a lot of good and a lot crappy driving.

Parade was great, BBQ was better, and I was sorry to hear we lost another good person from our quirky, loving group.

Re: CMP - Post race

After 4834 race miles our trusty OM617 finally had it's first real problem. Rae from the Dirty Little Freaks was out driving and said the temp suddenly rocketed. She coasted in but by the time she was in the paddock there was no water left in the cooling system but also no water in the oil. We let the car cool completely and added water to radiator and when I tried to start it, a metallic knocking sound. Oh well, she's bread jim.

I took this time to go looking to get a few minutes on track in a non-competing car. Brant at Come Monday was very generous and trusting and said he'd give me a full half hour. I was in disbelief but stoked. Then their other driver said he was sick and hot and didn't want to get back out on track. All of a sudden they say I'm doing 2 hours in the car. I've got to say, their car is a riot. Looking at the numbers my average lap in the Porsche was faster than my fastest lap ever in Planet Express, and that's in a car I'd never driven before. The big porsche is fast, handles well and is very forgiving. I did manage to get fully sideways and stopped in turn 14 so I'm sorry if I messed up somebody's hot lap. Huge thanks to the Come Monday guys for letting me pilot their rocket ship after ours broke down.

To my disbelief I come back to the ICR paddock to a running Planet Express. After another few hours of cooling Ted swapped the water pump, gutted the thermostat and got it to fire back up. We only had to change the fluid that once was oil and we'd be back out for sunday morning. Patrick took out the big ship for sunday morning and said it was running the best it ever has... for 1 lap. The car was super hot up to 230°F post radiator. We checked the rad with an IR thermometer and found it was doing nothing. Either no water flow or a clogged rad. Either way, we gave up. All in all we turned 30 laps, putting us ahead of 4 teams.

The best way for a car to leave the track is by AAA right?

If you were in a slower car, and happened to get passed by the Miata and Mercedes in quick succession (especially in the last 2 laps), could you please share the video clip with us?

Irritable Dad's, do you have some?

Thanks!

I have some video of the last few laps, had no idea you and the Miata were racing for position as I was locked in a battle with the Burp e36 for the loftiness of 8th place. We got around the IDS Miata just after the beginning of the last lap and past your car through the last carousel. The image stabilizer pooped the bed on my Git2 so I have to run the footage through some software to clean it up some but you might find it interesting..

Congratulations on the run we were in the corvette summer car that was leading class b Saturday at the conclusion by 4 laps after the Knoxville lowballers class c car bit the dust and the judges decided to move them back up to class A. Technically they should have been to begin with but they were going for a Trifecta in that they were going to try and win Class A,B, and C. Those guys were stupid quick out there and drove really clean but the c class car just couldn't make it. We ended up starting the race on Sunday with a brand new driver working on a couple of hours of sleep for the weekend due to having a late flight back from the left coast on Saturday. The Firebird guys just kept laying down smooth consistent fast laps while our new driver struggled to get a handle on the car. We ended up losing 3 of the 4 lap lead by the 11:00 mandatory stop. During that time we asked about fueling the cars in the paddock due to it being a Cold track and they said yes no problem. The part we missed was the fuelers needed to be completely decked out in race suit, helmet, gloves and such. So you can imagine their horror when they saw my guys in shorts and bare chested throwing fuel in the back of the car. At the start of the Sunday afternoon we were quickly black flagged and brought in to the penalty box to discuss the virtues of wearing safety gear when fueling. This took us out of the lead by a couple of laps. We were back and forth with you guys as far as second place goes and could have stayed out and made it a one stop pit stop for the second half but decided due to the heat we wouldn't run but 1.5 hours and pit. We finished just 14 seconds behind the Thunderbird in third place. The decision to pit came after I drove the Second time on Saturday and got out of the car disoriented and dehydrated. I ended up being taken to the tower to get in the AC and get checked out, heart rate was around 140 and I was having trouble focusing. After about a half hour of cooling off with freezer packs on me things started to get back to normal, I'd like to say thank you to those in the care center that helped me and made it entertaining while doing it. Often times they go unnoticed but lets hope you never need to see them. Hats off to Jay and Phil for a great weekend of racing and an awesome Block party, Lemons Rocks!!!!!

Glad to hear you were OK.  Did you use a cool suit?  What hydration system do you use while in the car?  I'm surprised at how many teams don't pay closer attention to driver hydration and comfort.  We use a cool suit of course, re-filled with ice for every driver, and we use a 1 quart thermos-type container with a tube and bite valve for driver hydration during the stint.  I drink ALL of my water, and when I get out after two hours, I really have to pee, meaning I'm staying hydrated.

Biggest mistake that I think i made was not taking time to eat something for lunch and that we didn't have any kind of hydration in the car or a cool suit. Things will be done differently for the next race for sure. All in all though we had a blast, we got the organizers choice and even won the under 2.0 liter race for Alex's lemonade stand. Biggest thing is we brought the car home in mostly one piece, (minus one side pipe) but overall in really good shape. Thank you to those that were giving us a bit wider birth than usual I would have hated to see all of that Body filler and expanding foam scattered all over the track.

You should make it a priority in the future.  Even though we were running in the top 10 overall, we had our driver pit once for the cool suit not being connected, and again a few laps later for an issue with the cool suit pump.

The car looked fantastic, way too pretty to be wheel 2 wheel on a track. Whenever I was around your car it was being driven well, first stint Saturday and last stint Sunday. A much deserved OC winner.

The Knoxvegas Lowballers had a great time as usual.  Parade was great, bbq was great, racing was great.

Sorry about your motor CRX of Death, but I gotta say, that explosion was the most spectacular thing I saw all weekend.  It was like a scene from Fast and Furious...we were drag racing into the kink, the Geo starts to pull a little bit, door to door, and BOOOOOOM, the hood on the CRX looked like it flexed out 6 inches, massive amounts of smoke pouring out of every body seam. You started dropping back and pulling off immediately.  Best of luck getting her fixed up, that thing is faster every time I see it!

Was that you I drove back to your campsite in a golf cart from the control room? If so, you were definitely a bit out of it. I'm really glad to hear your OK though.

The car looked fantastic, way too pretty to be wheel 2 wheel on a track. Whenever I was around your car it was being driven well, first stint Saturday and last stint Sunday. A much deserved OC winner.

Yeah I believe so, I was feeling pretty puny at the time but thank you so much for doing that, everybody at the track either running the event or racing or just being there in general are a credit to the sport and I commend you for the help and all those involved Thanks again smile

The decision to pit came after I drove the Second time on Saturday and got out of the car disoriented and dehydrated. I ended up being taken to the tower to get in the AC and get checked out, heart rate was around 140 and I was having trouble focusing.

My team makes fun of me ruthlessly about cooling and hydration, but 3+ hours of consistent fastest laps in the car usually shuts them up pretty quickly.

If you don't have a coolbox, I recommend getting Vince (VKZ24) to build you one. He has a damn good design, and built ours for this race. He charges $299, and that includes everything you need except for the shirts themselves. His boxes have 3 important design elements that set them apart from the commercial ones you might buy, aside from just being cheaper.

1) He uses a strong pump that doesn't need priming, and lives *outside* of the cooler. This is really important because the crappy blue, red, and white bilge pumps that the companies making these put in the boxes are fragile, and can get broken off their mounts by sliding ice, as well as requiring a minimum depth of about 2" of water to get started.

2) He has a bolt mounting system where the box is hard mounted to the floor of the car, but it's still easy to remove if needed. This seems a lot better and easier than the ratchet strap method we were using in the past, and doesn't cost an extra $60 for a mounting plate like the commercial companies charge.

3) His boxes have a rubber clip/strap to open and close, which is faster and easier during a pit change.

Anyway, the only issues we had was that the pump was so strong I could only run it for about 6 seconds before it got too cold on my skin, and that it shot one of the plugs for the shirt off the line from the box! His new designs include the speed controller for the pump to make it run slower, so that shouldn't be an issue.

And I second having water in the car. It makes a huge amount of difference, especially for people who aren't used to an endurance sport in hot weather. At some point, someone is going to crash a car and say "I was hot, and dehydrated, and I couldn't focus." I say don't let it be you. For drinks, we use camelbak bladders or those red and white thermoses with the hose, and put them in a cut out 1 gallon water jug or a flower pot which is zip tied to the roll cage either near the driver's left knee or over their left shoulder.

Let me know if you'd like any more info on this, as I'm kind of a cooling and hydration nut, being Skinny and all.

Vincent's cool shirt coolers are the bomb.  Up until recently we had been using the original VK built cooler (2008) and this was our first race with VK-v2.0.  The cooler worked flawlessly, and the new design is smaller and more efficient than earlier versions.  I would recommend using VK's coolers to anyone.  smile

I remember our young guy got a black flag. I don't recall him mentioning why.  Sorry that he didn't stop by to apologize.

Re: CMP - Post race

I had a cool suit in my old car but this project was still being worked on at the track trying to get it finished for the race. I used to run an aerator switch in my Honda that you could set to come on for a certain amount of time and then cut off again. I'm not sure if it helped save any ice or not but it did't freeze me out when it was running. I'd start getting really cool and then it would cut off, this is what I ran
