Topic: WTB: VW/Audi flywheel

There should be enough random parts laying around someone's garage/backyard for this to work.

I need an 8-bolt flywheel, either flat or with pressure plate for a watercooled (FWD) VW (or Audi) engine. A little over 10" across (I'm at work and the replacees are at home).

Anybody?

Have you checked rockauto?  As a member of a mk2 vw team, that is our goto source for cheap replacement parts that aren't easy to find in a junkyard or where new replacement is preferred.

Re: WTB: VW/Audi flywheel

Yeah, the problem is I don't know what I'm looking for. I have physical specs, not year, make and model.

If I can find the secret code, I know what to buy next time... I just don't have a hoard of VW stuff to pick parts from.

I've learned a lot about the VAG watercooled inline engines, but info on specifics seems short. I'm assuming I'll need to run the clutch disc that matches my trans splines, and maybe machine an adapter for the pilot bearing, but making a flywheel seems a tall order.

I was hoping the collective could point me in the direction of a close enough answer (88-92 VR6?) to make it possible to buy parts.

I've got green stuff for trade (not ganja, the federally sponsored stuff), or some random Volvo parts, or beer at Buttonwillow or Inde...

In my head, getting an 8-bolt version of this is ideal:

Either it's still in your head or something's wrong with mine...

Re: WTB: VW/Audi flywheel

fyi VW 4cyl flywheels are 6 bolts, 5/6/8 cyl VAG is 8 bolt

That's good info.

My searching leads me to believe there are at least 5 different pressure plate patterns... the one I have, a flat flywheel with the dowels shifted relative to the bolt holes maybe 15 degrees, a deep dish, and a thin crust dish (like on the VR6).

There appear to be two different ring gears, but my sample size of two leads me to believe most are at least the same diameter for a different tooth count (148 vs. 152 or something).

I have posted in marque-specific forums, but apparently my various IP addresses exude lemony goodness... nobody responds there.

It's entirely possible it doesn't exist. I'll move on to take advantage of derekste's wisdom in a few weeks/months.

There's still a bunch of in-out, in-out to do before the grand finale on this swap.
