Topic: The Cavalier is dead- rolled again!

We got tapped by the maxima and stalwart Tyler ended up hitting the wall in Turn 10 HARD, then flipping over and skidding down towards Turn 11.

Maxima contributed, we have the video. (edit later- looking at the clip a lot more it looks like the Maxima just didn't see the Cav, a 'racing incident')

Then the car caught on fire.

Aside from those minor details, everything is great!

He's en route to the next hospital with some kind of broken vertebrae.

Guess it shows how lucky the Tx drivers were,  4 roll overs no hospital visits.

I'm amazed that his legs are ok- good cage.
The driver's side floor is pushed back 8 inches, and the left frame rail is collapsed back almost to the firewall, along with the engine/trans pushed back to the firewall.

The video is pretty amazing, and his presence of mind getting out of the car was quite good, considering the car went up in flames about 3 sec after he got out...

Looks like the roll started when the rear wheel caught on the wall, chucking the car on its roof.

Wow, he did just get out in time.  Sorry about your car and I hope the driver is OK.  It looked to me like he was a bit agressive and tried to fit through a closing door.  I assume the fire didn't last long enough to hurt the camera?

Yeah, he may have misjudged the Maxima getting balked by the BMW.
The tire marks from the Maxima are on the back of the rear door though, so the Cavalier was for sure well into the Maxima's vision...

The fire guys were right there, so the fire only lasted long enough to melt the engine harness and most of the underhood wiring.

The video cutoff is the fire guys hitting the master kill.

You can see the flames as he's unbucking the harness, so no time to waste...

First, I hope your driver is OK.  It was a scary accident and I'm truly sorry for the crash.

As the captain of the team I talked to the driver at length after the event and we just watched this video a few dozen times together.  Let me tell you he DID see the Cavalier fast approaching several turns back, he knew he was a sitting duck.  He admitted he didn't for the life of him think we would catch him so fast and then attempt such a tight pass. Our diver believed he was driving his line for the most part and being in front it is the overtaking cars responsibility to make the clean pass or use discrection, especially when passing 3 wide.  There is no doubt there was contact with our car, but it sure appears that the secondary contact with the #25 Miata is the one that really turned the car sideways - this is NOT to say the Miata is to blame at all.  Our driver has agreed to accept any and all responsibility to this "racing incident" as you said.

As captain of ONSET I appreciate your candor, and the classic 'racing incident' line seems most appropriate for this series of unfortunate events. Two underestimations of the most likely next move= contact.

watching the video a few times you can see a bad situation developing and He drove right into it     this is what overly aggresive driving gets you in Lemons       like it says in  the rules   if your upside down you have no business being on a racetrack

I have to say that it looks like a racing incident to me, but he also was driving very aggressively.  Personally, I wouldn't have shoved my nose in there, which is why don't have any black flags, but also I don't lay down the fastest laps.  So you have drivers like this who are very fast, but eventually this sort of thing will happen.  I hope he's doing better and I hope will get back in the car in 12 months after his suspension is over.

That isn't something that he would normally do, we are pretty well known as clean racers.

I will certainly defend him against casual holier-than-thou-ness, especially coming from the team principal of the coROLLa...

We as a team have something like 8 black flags in 11 races, pretty much all for passing under yellow. Make of that what you will.

Not attacking him, but it was an aggressive move.  He overtook those cars very quickly.  And remember we have a 30 second youtube bit.  We don't know how he drove the rest of the race, all we can see is this one little bit.  Since he's a normally clean and non-aggressive driver, this REALLY sucks.   sad

I watched again and again to see how it happened, and to me the Maxima was closing the door.  Your driver had a second option, jump on the brakes and tuck to the right and cuss.  It certainly was cuss-worthy, he was definitely cut off.  He chose a different option and it didn't work out.  The poor Miata had no where to go.  Once the back of the Cavelier was hit, he trajectory changed right into the path of the Miata. 

BTW-when Mark rolled the coROLLa, I did not defend him.  He screwed up, plain and simple, and he owned it.  It ruined our team's weekend and it was his fault and solely his fault.  I didn't and don't make excses for him.  We move on and learn from it.  In this case there is some culpability on the part of the Maxima, but he wasn't the overtaking driver.  Again, I hope your driver feels better.
