Topic: Safety Gear Q: Short sleeve SFI T shirt ok?

Pyrotect has a nice cheap short sleeve T that sounds a lot more comfortable than a long sleeve turtle neck for Buttonwillow in August.

The only reason I'm buying the shirt is because of the rules. So really the question is does a short sleeve T meet the rules (and any potential future rule changes). I'm aware of the extra protection a long sleeve turtleneck provides, I'll take my chances if the rules allow. I was fine just wearing a cotton tshirt under my single layer suit at all the previous races I ran.

So what's the verdict, would this shirt meet the rules (or any expected rule changes on the horizon)?

"PYROTECT’s ultra thin INNER WEAR is designed for use with any driving suit, and is as soft as cashmere and as absorbent as cotton! Talk about comfort... No more scratchy, irritating Nomex (fiberglass) next to the skin and the absorbency keeps you cool and dry. It is SFI rated (SFI label attached) for use as underwear"

Only $15.

Nick?  Great question

Re: Safety Gear Q: Short sleeve SFI T shirt ok?

The reason for adding the underwear to the single-layer suits is to create a sort of poor man's multilayer setup--with the short-sleeve underwear, you're skipping a fairly significant portion of that extra layering. So it's gotta be long-sleeve underwear...sorry!

That shirt will make a wonderful base for a home brew cool shirt.

We can wear whatever the heck we want under our 2 layer suits, right? I'm going to be buying some cool vests and the above mentioned shirts would be great to wear under the vests, essentially creating 3 layers of protection.

Not quite ANYTHING....you can't wear anything synthetic that will melt to your skin. But if you're talking about adding more layers of fire protection, knock yourself out.

so wait. 3.7 says "Multilayer suits rated SFI 3.2/A5 or higher are highly recommended and may be worn without longjohns". would that mean we could go commando?

A note about Pyrotect's t-shirt: They are, as Sir Jackie Stewart would say, hew-age. I ordered a large and swim in it. I normally wear a large Hanes t-shirt, and could have easily gotten away with a medium Pyrotect.

We won the IOE at Southern Discomfort.
We got screwed at The Real Hoopties of New Jersey  and we took cars down with us.
We got the curse at Capitol Offense but they wouldn't let us destroy the car.

I think the People's Curse winners are given the nomex underwear checking job Sunday afternoon.

Speaking of fit, should overclothes and underclothes fit snugly, or should they be looser so one can move about easier?

long johns should fit snugly.  you probably won't have much choice in the matter unless you're sized like Calvin Borel and order the XL underwear.

Re: Safety Gear Q: Short sleeve SFI T shirt ok?

That's really a personal preference. Undergarments are generally snugger, while your suit is looser, but not so loose as to be catching on anything in the car. Unless you are having a suit custom fitted, which is an option for Pyrotect and many other mfgs, you are gonna have to deal with whatever the off the rack size is. My Pyrotect multi-layer Deluxe suit is a large and is snug in some places, but the legs and sleeves are right length so I suck it up (or in, actually). Once on the suit is quite comfortable.

I was afraid to google Calvin Borel, but the results were a lot more inocuous than I feared, but thx for the info guys.

I'm chicken about fire protection.  I wear both a multilayer /A5 suit and CarbonX.  I really don't think the heat difference is all that much.
