Topic: mercedes w123 main hoop and back stay mount points

getting ready to install the cage on our w123/chrysler 440 mashup.  I think that the main hoop should be connected where the rear subframe connects to the body, and the backstays connect where the rear shock towers are welded to the rear firewall, just below the circular rear shock access holes.  the thing is, it looks like this will result in the angle between the hoop and the back stays being less than 45 degrees.  How much less than 45 are we allowed to be?  Can any other w123 builders chime in, or post pictures of what they have done?  Ill post pics of what im talking about when i can get in front of my desktop

Re: mercedes w123 main hoop and back stay mount points

A little off of 45 is ok.  Somewhere on the forums there are pics of the two 115s we caged..Not exact, but close to a 123.

Main hoop at the rear subframe mounts sounds kinda far back.  And can you reach the rear shock mounts and miss the factory tank?

Two observations I have:

1) the main hoop looks awful far back, unless the seat is way back as well.

2) It looks like the rear braces are in an 'X' and if that's the case AFAIK it won't pass tech. You'd need two braces running straight back and then an optional  diagonal, preferably from behind the drivers' head to the bottom of the right side brace.

But I do like the door bar running outside of the B pillar. Nice work.

NBA theme... all drivers 6'10"+?

Looks to me like a diagonal off the main hoop. Good idea. Makes a pyramid. I'd run it the other way though, with the point over the driver...
In addition to the required ~45 deg rear stays and main hoop diagonal of course.

Ditto...

Re: mercedes w123 main hoop and back stay mount points

heres a diffelent angle, showing where I figure the seat will go.  no nba drivers here, we just moved the seat back to make room for a big engine that will also be moved back.  the backstays are straight down, and i also made a diagonal brace.  i have it going to the passenger side because it seemed better to have it meet the same 'node' as the diagonal brace that will go across the halo hoop...

Okay, that clears up my two observations. Looks good! I do agree with flipping the diagonal so it runs from behind the drivers' head to the bottom of the right side rear brace. The more tubes behind the driver's noggin, the better. For instance, my illclimb car also has a diagonal running from the front of the main hoop down to the right front landing pad.
