Topic: Muttonheads Tow thread.
There have been a lot of threads on tow trucks with lots of good info of late so I thought I would post up some stuff on my own search for a tow truck. Now that I have found one I will also post up some of the renovation as well.
Currently our team is sort of spread out with Jim, a few other guys and myself living here in central Ohio. Nick (zeebrabeeFJ) who is our heavy equipment guy lives over in Indy so whenever we need something latched onto and yanked he has to bring a big truck a long way to do it.
I have been moving a lot of cars and parts and my wife has a long list of projects which will need a truck to manage so the time had come for me to find something so this brought us to the search. I had considered late 90s Vortec GMs as well as 99-03 GMs with LS based motors. After seeing a lot of rusted out GMs I pondered going south to find a truck and then started looking more seriously at early to mid 90s Fords. I did daily searches for all of the above on Craigslist and waited. I went to see maybe 6 or 7 trucks of various styles and options and then I ran across this ad...
F350 Ford diesel truck $2000.00 call 740466XXXX
It had a crappy pic of a Quad 1997 Ford with a utility bed and thats it. I called, heard nothing back and forgot about it.
The other day I get a call out of the blue and its a guy saying its his friends truck, was purchased for a business that never got off the ground. It was found by another possible buyer to have "a bad transmission" and the price was dropped to the above from a good bit higher.
I figured for the price it was worth a look so after working on the new car some yesterday I make the drive and find this truck.

Its rot free, most everything is there, nothing leaking or pouring out of it and it starts up and runs without a hitch.
We take it for a run and it drives ok, shifts well but does hunt a little between 3rd and 4th gear. The front end is a bit vague, the brake pedal is a bit soft and will slowly compress as you stop.
Its missing the stereo, the drivers door pull is a coat hanger and the truck looks like guys who worked for a living used it thoughtfully as their place of business for a decade or so.
Did I mention it was rot free and drove?
Oh yeah... its a 7.3 as well.
I kicked the tires (that were a bit worn with one wheel needing repair) and tried to not act too excited or impressed. I offered $1500 and they countered with $1600 to which we shake hands and make a deal.
So I have found us a truck that I hope will keep the wife happy and let us drag a car or two about anywhere we need to go with as little fuss as possible. I need to dig into this thing and start finding its weak points and get it road worthy as soon as possible as the Mrs has asked me if I can go get X and Y for her already.
This should be fun.
