Topic: Muttonheads Tow thread.

There have been a lot of threads on tow trucks with lots of good info of late so I thought I would post up some stuff on my own search for a tow truck. Now that I have found one I will also post up some of the renovation as well.

Currently our team is sort of spread out with Jim, a few other guys and myself living here in central Ohio. Nick (zeebrabeeFJ) who is our heavy equipment guy lives over in Indy so whenever we need something latched onto and yanked he has to bring a big truck a long way to do it.

I have been moving a lot of cars and parts and my wife has a long list of projects which will need a truck to manage so the time had come for me to find something so this brought us to the search. I had considered late 90s Vortec GMs as well as 99-03 GMs with LS based motors. After seeing a lot of rusted out GMs I pondered going south to find a truck and then started looking more seriously at early to mid 90s Fords. I did daily searches for all of the above on Craigslist and waited. I went to see maybe 6 or 7 trucks of various styles and options and then I ran across this ad...

F350 Ford diesel truck $2000.00 call 740466XXXX

It had a crappy pic of a Quad 1997 Ford with a utility bed and thats it. I called, heard nothing back and forgot about it.

The other day I get a call out of the blue and its a guy saying its his friends truck, was purchased for a business that never got off the ground. It was found by another possible buyer to have "a bad transmission" and the price was dropped to the above from a good bit higher.

I figured for the price it was worth a look so after working on the new car some yesterday I make the drive and find this truck.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184533.jpg

Its rot free, most everything is there, nothing leaking or pouring out of it and it starts up and runs without a hitch.

We take it for a run and it drives ok, shifts well but does hunt a little between 3rd and 4th gear. The front end is a bit vague, the brake pedal is a bit soft and will slowly compress as you stop.

Its missing the stereo, the drivers door pull is a coat hanger and the truck looks like guys who worked for a living used it thoughtfully as their place of business for a decade or so.

Did I mention it was rot free and drove?

Oh yeah... its a 7.3 as well.

I kicked the tires (that were a bit worn with one wheel needing repair) and tried to not act too excited or impressed. I offered $1500 and they countered with $1600 to which we shake hands and make a deal.

So I have found us a truck that I hope will keep the wife happy and let us drag a car or two about anywhere we need to go with as little fuss as possible. I need to dig into this thing and start finding its weak points and get it road worthy as soon as possible as the Mrs has asked me if I can go get X and Y for her already.

This should be fun.

More pics.

Overall I am pretty pleased with the lack of rust and rot. Not sure where this truck is from but it can't be Ohio.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184709.jpg

The utility bed is pretty solid overall. Not at all sure what I would do do with all of the space but I am sure it could come in handy. Of course ditching this bed and going more conventional IS an option. I have no idea how hard or easy it would be to run single rear wheels and to in effect un-dually the truck would be but it's also in the back of my mind.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184839.jpg

Here you can see where the failed hinge bent the hood. I am sure it won't be too hard to find these parts. As a matter of fact I got email from Nick who seems to have many of the things I need to restore this truck just laying around. Its so good to have a Nick around!

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184748.jpg

I know you guys love the drivers door pull. Don't be too jealous. It doesn't work. The windows work, some of them well but the button on the psg side is for show only. Not sure what sort of stereo to put in but there is a nice big hole where one COULD go.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184729.jpg

Lots of room back here for a den, office, bunk beds, whatever. My wife is happy as there is room for the whole family to go get flowers and mulch. In all honesty I think she really see's a chance to go to the mall and bring back more stuff than her minivan will tote.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184505.jpg

Two new(er) batteries, new lift pump and boy racer hot air intake FTW.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184611.jpg

More lack of rot. So what is that bracket on the lower control arm that looks like it should have something attached to it anyway?

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184626.jpg

Hangers where something should be hanging I would think.

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/20120324_184643.jpg

Wires hanging with connectors going nowhere and hitch fabricated by someone with some metal and a hot glue gun. This may need some sorting.

After taking care of business I stuck around for a bit and talked to the guy about cars and such and we got on the subject of Lemons and he lit up a bit and asked if anyone would be interested in this car...

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c93/DSycks/BrownCarWinning.jpg

Its a real honest diplomat wagon with a slant six. Can be had with a spare slant six and I think $500 would get the car with spare motor. It also runs and drives.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

Some obvious stuff:  Needs lights and wiring cleaned up in the rear.  The hitch needs cut off and replaced with a real weight rated hitch.  Needs trailer wiring as part of the repairs.  Not sure what you are looking at on the front end; will need to see in person to explain.  To un-dually the truck: sell and buy a not dually!  Dually is more stable towing.  More weight carrying capacity too (with a utility box it's easy to overload).  I have extra door window switches too.  The radio hole takes a standard single DIN mount headunit.  The instrument cluster surround is diesel specific but a plain F150 version can be cut to match a diesel.  The Bronco part is different (I learned this the hard way - I have a very nice Bronco piece that won't work in any of our F-pickups).

FWIW - I live 45 miles west of Cincinnati in the middle of no-where IN.  Indianapolis is 90 miles away from me...  ;-P

Remind me again why you're building a cheatin' ass BMW when that chock full 'o win slant 6 wagon is available?  Are you sure yer in touch with the spirit of LeMons?  ;-P

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

Dude, that BMW is fighting me tooth and nail. Spent hours on it yesterday after finding that our truck oil pan that solved all the issues the non truck pan caused its own issues... namely that we could attach a small brush to the bottom and sweep the track as we drove. Thats a whole other story however.

Dually it shall stay. Going to a dually bed however and adding a topper may be a longer range goal however as I think that may help with cheating wind and helping with MPG? I defer to you.

Right now the hope is to find obvious issues, make sure its sound as can be and keep it working enough to make it happy and find issues that can be addressed before we are towing 2 cars 6 hours away at 3am in the middle of nowhere.

As for Indy, I guess its an Ohio failing as I just call the whole state that. We will be in Bloomington for a day or so this week to visit family, if you are game you may have to come over and have dinner with us.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

Yes, swapping that utilty body will net better MPG.  When I installed the flatbed on my dually I lost 2-3 mpg.  Then diesel went ULSD and my mileage dropped some more.  But if you don't drive the truck much I would not worry about it.  The utility body may work better for racing but I've never owned one so I can't say for sure.

I think I'll pass on the 5 hour round trip to Bloomington.  Thanks tho.  ;-)

Nice truck... Sexy pinstripes... Pretty color...

The 94 460 crew cab long bed I just bought is also missing the drivers inside door handle.... And the carpet is exactly the same colorS

I'm jealous of the utility bed.

Do your power windows roll up at all?  Mine love to go down but refuse to go up without significant assistance, positive encouragement, moral support.

I literally pressed my palms against the inside and outside and hit the up switch with my knee in order to get one of the rears up.  Acrobatic.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

The power windows I tried all rolled up. By that I mean front.

I also went through most of the bins on the bed. It really Is in pretty solid shape. I worry that they few that were locked may have body parts hidden in them.

To be perfectly honest I think there has to be some very serious issues with this truck that I must have missed. There is no way I got this good of a deal without some sort of penalty.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

I kinda worried about that too... but there is some comfort in the following thought...

Other than the the bed styles you and I just bought virtually the same truck in different states for exactly the same price.

I think you and I have a use for these trucks that is different than the people who make their living with them, driving them all the time, so the need for more economical trucks, even by a few mpg, is bigger... and also tax writeoffs for buying new trucks comes into play for farmers and contractors and other small business owners

...and we arent afraid of cosmetic and minor mechanical issues like a guy who wants to pull his bass boat, for example.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

I gave serious thought to buying and even looked at a few show ponies. I also looked at a few huge steaming piles of dung.

Oddly I find a good bit of comfort in having a truck that is a little older and uglier. Who cares if it gets another scratch or ding? Its just added character, right?

I need to get this truck in front of some professional evaluation and start making a to do list to get this thing ready for the road. I think first stop may be at a trans shop to get the trans flushed out and see if that helps with the hunting in overdrive.

Oddly, the stalk on the column where the OD on off button resides is broken off with wires sort of sticking out. There are a few other wires sticking out the left side of the dash lower that are twist tied together showing world class repair of what is most likely some critical electrical function.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

Yes, this is a 7.3 Powerstroke. 170k on the odo. It may be 370k for all I know but the overall condition of the truck makes me think that it is more likely closer to 170 than 370.

I've started looking at some Powerstroke forums and it seems that simple mods like exhaust and a few other less intrusive things may be able to return economy in the high teens.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

we've got a 94 f350 diesel at work who likes to change gears at random cruising speeds from time to time. it's the 2nd or 3rd trans, always the same issue just gets worse and worse til trans is smoked, doesn't seem to like staying in over drive.. then again, we beat the piss out of our work trucks, and they rarely get the maintenance they deserve, so it may not be terribly common to require a new trans unless you ignore it for a couple years..

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

Yeah, I rode around in a Mobile ICU as part of my nursing gig for a few years and I noted that many E350s of similar vintage had similar issues and most held on with little issue in round the clock service for extended periods of time doing the same thing.

I am hopeful that some TLC and the skilled hands of Jim and Nick will be able to make this thing do its thing for years to come. If I need to throw money at it at some point I will be far more ok with it as I didn't have to soend it up front and I can control the quality (or lack there of) work that goes into the truck.

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

So the truck made it home today. Big thanks to FJ40Jim for going with me and bringing this thing home.

Truck ran strong over the 90 min trip but the trans does have some little hiccups. The fuel tank that works leaks when it gets too full and the bad is sort of trying to fall off.

The motor is plenty strong however and most gears seem to work without being fussy and it has enough room in the west wing to set up offices or maybe install a sauna. Overall very happy to have this thing home and now we can get down to fixing some stuff.

As far as that goes, Jim and Nick seem to have made some headway on some of the trucks issues and there is hope that the trans is not dead yet all gears work, just not all the time. Seems there is a valve body rebuild that should address this. Nick has tons of spares that should help save cash on parts and I have a line on a new bed.

And... I think we are going to paint it white. More to come!

Re: Muttonheads Tow thread.

When towing make sure you turn the OD off.  It will help the trans last longer.

If you really want a radio I have the unit out of the 88 Mustang I am Lemonizing.  It has a CD player and a 300 watt amplifier.  All the wiring is still there, for now.

Just having fun.

IMHO with these transmissions the "tow with OD off" doesn't apply anymore.  The trans locks the torque convertor in OD.  When the convertor is locked is when the trans generates the least amount of heat.  The only time you need to kick it out of OD is when the trans starts hunting between 3-4 in slower traffic or on hills.
