Topic: Best rental trailer?

What with my trailer getting stolen, what's the best deal from the chains for trailer rental - Ideally something that doesn't weigh more than my car...

uhaul looks like over $200 for 4 days.... ouch.

Thanks...

I have used the heavy steel U haul units and they tow/stop fantastic except for the rock hard bias tires, most of the Ryder units look to be aluminum but never tried one.

Re: Best rental trailer?

My conversation with U haul (my trailer was stolen also). This occurred on a Wednesday.

Me: How much is it to rent a trailer for a day?
UH: what are you towing?
Me: 94 Toyota Celica
UH: OK so you can use a tow dolly.
Me: NO, I want a trailer
UH: Oh, you want a trailer
Me: Yes
UH: $48 per day
Me: OK. If I pick the trailer up before noon on Saturday and return it before noon on Monday that would be 2 days, right?
UH: today is Wednesday
Me OK, thank you, good bye

Yes, it really happened. I called a friend to see if he knew someone with a trailer, he did, we were golden!

Picked up my new trailer today as well!

Oooo, I've got to call them and see what they say when I tell them I'm towing a '59 Humber Super Snipe!   smile

Rent one way from 4 miles south of your house, to 9 miles north. cheapest solution.

I want to say Ryder will only let you tow with their trucks.  But I could totally be wrong on that one.

I'm not actually planning on renting from U-Haul, I just thought it would be fun to play with their tiny brains.   Sort of like my cat does with bugs she finds.   Yes, I'm easily amused.   smile

Re: Best rental trailer?

I feel this is an opportunity for me to say

FUCK YOU UHAUL

I was gonna use a UFUCKINGCOCKSUCKERSSUCKCOCKHAUL trailer as I did last year for NJ when I was informed they made a "regional decision" that they no longer do overnight trailer rentals.  They had the nerve to suggest towing the car to the track and dropping off the trailer down there, then going back on Sunday and picking it up.  Ohh and they charge you twice as much to do that.  I said whats different than me just giving you the $54 per day, than 2 different people doing it and having to come back to the store and use resources.  They replied, that was the decsion, sorry.

WELL FUCK YOU UHAUL

The same fuckers that when we reserved a pickup as a backup to our tow rig a few years ago I called up to confirm it an hour before I was to pick it up and they said "ohh we don't have any in the area" and told me my reservation meant nothing.

SO FUCK YOU UHAUL.

no I'm not bitter....

I know you're not seriously planning to rent, but as a public service announcement:  If they say it isn't in their computer, the next thing they'll say is that they won't rent to you, no matter what else you tell them.  This is why everything I've ever towed with their equipment (trailer or dolly) somehow winds up being a '74 VW Bug.

Re: Best rental trailer?

Random related, a smart car will comfortably fit on a single axle utility trailer.

I always tell them I am towing a bug with a 10,000lb class C RV. Even that one time I towed a 6,000lb 67 Dodge Polara with a Dakota. (Scary huge car in rear view mirror). There are very few approved combinations in their computers regardless of actual towing capacities, and the dudes behind the counter are occasionally as dumb as a box of rocks.

I started renting from a local equipment rental outfit and saved myself LOADS of frustration and money.

Re: Best rental trailer?

Have any of you tried to make online reservations with their web site?  Their database goes WAY back.  According to their site I can tow any of their trailers with my drum braked 1960 Chevy Parkwood wagon.  I have never had an issue. It seems their web site is smarter than their employees, though the site seems to think my Chevy Colorado 2wd has a lower tow rating than a 4wd, everything else being equal.  As far as I know none of the other chains will rent you a car hauler trailer to hitch to your truck, only to theirs.

The Uhaul web site only allowed me to reserve a trailer for a 24 rental, but it was no problem telling the guy behind the counter that I would have it for 3 or 4 days, depending on when I got back.  They also rent on a 24 hour day, so pick up Friday morning, drop off Monday morning is only 3 days.

Re: Best rental trailer?

I used to rent UHaul trailers fairly frequently (before I bought mine), and my experiences were often the same.  First time I wanted to tow a 1974 BMW 2002 with my 1977 GMC suburban.  Car not in system, and TOW VEHICLE not in system, no rentie.  So I called back and told them it was a 1986 Ford Tempo with a 1990 GMC Suburban.  No problem.

Also had the issue where I reserved the trailer and it wasn't waiting for me when I got there.

On the plus side, the trailer quality was always decent.  FWIW.

Penske is the one that makes you rent a truck to tow their trailers with.

Now I lease my trailer out to friends for cases of beer, and never have to deal with the annoying rental people.  Renting trailers sucks big filthy donkey balls.  Buy a trailer, or buy a friend with a trailer lots of beer.

That was my issue as well (website, which used to let you do it, now not anymore) so I called them and that was what they told me their policy was.  They did say that maybe I could get the local manager to give me an exception.  I tried to call him 6 times, never answered the phone, no call back.

I ended up borrowing a trailer.

Occasionally?!  I like how if you reserve online, you go through their little exercise of putting in your tow vehicle, then the vehicle you will be towing, then if it's all okay, they give you a res.  Then when you show up to pick it up, YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN!

I am SO glad I finally got my own car trailer; no more FU-haul.

Re: Best rental trailer?

I've rented a United Rentals trailer twice now. It works decent (Surge brakes suck) but the damn thing is heavvvvvy. I'm going to try a Uhaul one next time. We're lucky, our local guy has a few "personal" trailers he'll let me rent multiple nights.

UHaul car transporters are pretty heavy, too.  I was surprised at how small the difference seemed between empty and loaded with our '80 RX7.

They've gotta be lighter than a solid steel deck though? Unless my eyes deceive me.

If it was a full deck, then yeah; UHaul will probably be lighter.  It was open between the wheel rails, with only some cross bars in between.

Re: Best rental trailer?

If you buy your own trailer, buy a full deck model.  Yes, they are heavier, but they are so much more useful.  And sturdy.

I agree, and I would even say an enclosed trailer is the best if you can swing the extra cash (and you don't need an open trailer).  It's nice being able to pack your gear away from prying eyes...
