Topic: Oil pan spacer - MR2 AW11

I've got the oil pan off and thinking about making a spacer to increase oil capacity. Does 1" seem enough? If I go thicker are there ground clearance issues? I've also heard about kicked-out oil pans, which I'm assuming means increasing the capacity by welding on a box. Worthwhile or leave that alone?

Also looking for an oil cooler and plumbing.

If you put a spacer on it, you'll have to move the oil pump pick up too, I'm pretty sure.  You are better off welding some "boxes" to the sides and making the kicked out pan.  While you are at it make some baffles to keep the oil where the pick up is (mostly) when you go around corners, brake, and accelerate.

I would probably just add a cooler to increase capacity and maybe baffle the oil pan so you are sure to get oil all the time.

Easy way for the cooler is to get a sandwich plate that goes on before the filter, and then just get some rubber hoses and buy a used cooler in a junkyard.

It appears as though you already have a cooler and plumbing.

Just change out the factory cooler, or add to it, an auxiliary cooler.

A spacer seems like a real PITA, especially since you will have to lower the oil pick-up for about 10mm clearance between
the bottom of the pan and the pick-up. For all of the hassle of a spacer, building kick-outs with baffles is a lot easier. Do you TIG weld?
If not, you may have some trouble with pin-hole leaks.

What I especially like about the kick-out option is the opportunity to use thicker metal for the pan bottom.

That factory oil cooler is horrible. If/when the oil lines split, they spit all that high-pressure oil right onto the exhaust manifold. It makes for a nice engine fire on top of oil starving the motor.

What we did on our Civic: pulled the pan and saw that when the oil was at the 'low' mark on the dipstick it was below the level of the main bearings by a good bit, much closer when it was full. Made a mark on the dipstick to show how low the rod bearings dropped, then added a quart and found that when the oil level dropped due to the engine running (holds about a quart in the passages, filter etc) it was still a tiny bit below the lowest part of the rods, meaning they wouldn't hit as long as the engine was running. We sorta split the difference at around 6/10 quart overfull. Three CMP races later, still no starvation issues.
