Re: TIre pressure e30?

I have a probe type tire pyrometer and I've never used it on the lemons car...but I think I'll bring it to summit just for fun.

we start low 30s and aim for high 30s hot (38ish is a nice number.  over 40, they don't feel as good).  225/50 star specs on 16x7/7.5, medium weight car (maybe 2800 w/driver?)

If you have a light car you can probably run lower pressure.  If you have a heavy car you may need more pressure (depends on tire size in both cases).  If you lack front camber, you need more pressure.

Re: TIre pressure e30?

I am pretty sure everyone talking about tire temps aren't saying it is something they are doing at pit stops.  Tire temps are just where they are determining what tire pressure they are interested in seeing during a pit stop.

We usually spend some time looking at tire temps on a friday test day then we know the tire pressures we want on race day.

Re: TIre pressure e30?

Tire temps are definitely a friday practice type of activity.  We barely find time to check pressures during pit stops.  And that's usually only at the first stop just to make sure they're OK.

Re: TIre pressure e30?

What's funny to me is that in two years, Lemons went from Fun and goofy to SCCA... That sure didn't take long. I have all the tools and techniques to do set up right, but I just gustimated instead. Its lemons! Until you have everything else down and those few seconds matter, why bother? I even eyeballed the front toe using nothing more than a tape measure and some string (granted, I've been doing this a while, so have a pretty good eye)... Practically every combo of car, tire, setup and DRIVER will require different settings. If I were serious about it, I'd run differential camber and caster left to right and offset corner balance. Didn't do all that, but next race will run front to rear tire and wheel size stagger to take out some of the constant oversteer. If I get real ambitious, I'll dial in a bit more LF camber, and about 1/2 that more LR camber, and maybe take out a touch on the RR. Its amazing the difference driver makes though. Like Rob, I tend to run 32/30 cold on star specs - set and forget at the start of the event, though our cars couldn't be more different.

Re: TIre pressure e30?

Are you implying that LeMons isn't still fun and goofy? Because that sure as hell isn't my experience. No reason that you can't have fun, be goofy, and try to turn fast laps all in the same race. They're not mutually exclusive.

But there's a chance that I don't understand your use of "to SCCA".

After wind tunnels we can go back to the best way to design brake ducts... Then damper design and how to replace oil for desired effect... Then sway bars... Then corner balancing...
