Good point, but I was thinking of the belts in my '69 Caddy.

There are cars built within the last 30 years that have manual chokes. The base model '84-85 RX-7s had 4-barrel carburetors with semi-manual chokes. You pull the choke out to start it and it shuts off on its own when the engine warms up.

And on an automatic Maserati Biturbo, the choke is manual but the trans isn't. In 1986.

This came in handy in 1992 when my HS pal had one and the cable broke to the throttle 30 miles from home. Drop it into Drive, yank the choke out, go 45 mph. Worked like a charm but I bet the catalytic converter didn't care for that.

You seriously consider switching to a magneto just so you can rip out the entire &^(&*(%^ electrical system.  S/F.....Ken M

You can rewire the entire electrical system without needing a manual, schematic, or any of that sissy stuff.   smile

You'd think that, right?

Sometimes I wonder if they didn't wire the damned car for 3phase power or something.  S/F....Ken M

Actually, to be pedantic, the alternator is 3 phase internally.   smile   Of course, that is after I converted from a Lucas generator to a used GM single-wire alternator.

Sunday, while  connecting the ammeter, I asked my friend Richard what the odds were of getting it backwards.   He replied, "50/50, of course."   "No", I replied, "you have forgotten about Murphy's Law.   The odds of getting it backward are 100%."   And, yes, it is connected backwards.   sad

Pfff.  Alternators are for the weak!  I likes to GENERATE my own electricity.

Although you couldn't tell by the prices, mopar stuff is common enough that I haven't had to consider rebuilding an alternator.  S/F....Ken M

Once drove my old 59 Baja bug home using bootlaces tied to the carburetor. Shifting and steering back up the mountain was a great adventure.
