Topic: the Art of Racing in the Rain

Have you read this book yet?  I got it as a gift and read it in 2 nights, a wonderful liturary gem indeed.  A must read for all car people and dog lovers or even if you hate dogs and despise cars, still a great read!!  I highly recommend it.

Re: the Art of Racing in the Rain

i liked it.  a little bit hokey at times, but as a racer and a dog lover, it hit the right notes.

I am reading Cannonball by Brock Yates and it is helping me to think about all of the pit "strategy" stuff for our first race.  I want it to be March NOW!!  Back to reading.

Re: the Art of Racing in the Rain

Buzz - agreed a bit hokey at times but still funny, poignant, insightful, emotional and just good fun. I don't want to be a spoiler but few books have me laugh out loud like this one did and ok I'll admit, it did bring a tear to my eye now and then too.

I read "Go Like Hell: Ford, Ferrari, and Their Battle for Speed and Glory at Le Mans" a few months back, shortly after it came out. Amazing book and great for when you can't actually be on the track. Carroll Shelby's abiding derision for Enzo Ferrari made a lot more sense after reading this book.

Yeah, about that book:  I don't have my copy of "Weird Cars" handy, but as I recall the author got a few, generally minor, things wrong about the KV/KVS, though it was cool to see that the book has a photo showing my very car from back in its days at the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum (it's the one in the background).  I enjoyed the book immensely but now have to wonder about the other descriptions.

Thread resurrection.
I finished it last night, crying like a baby.

I NEVER read. I've picked up several books to get a few chapters in and toss it on the shelf never to look at it again. I read this one in a matter of a few days.

I know, it made me cry too. Doesn't seem possible since you know from the beginning what's going to happen. That's the sign of a good writer.

I didnt know If I could make it through after the first chapter, but was able to thouroughly enjoy it. We recently had to put down a dog that was my best buddy, very much like Enzo was in the book, so a ton of emotions and lonely ness came out when I finished it.

I would say pass, but you guys keep saying its a good read. I've lost too many pets that I loved dearly. I'm a firm believer in getting another one pretty quickly, though. They (rescues, of course, not puppy mill support purchases) need a good home, and their unconditional love is priceless.

I'm a cat person, but I agree that rescues are the best choice.   And the love is indeed priceless.   Almost every night my kitty sits on the bed while I brush my teeth.   As soon as I get into bed, she curls up in my right arm pit and starts purring.   As I type this, she is curled up between my chest and the keyboard, with her head on my arm and her feet against my chest.   Lots of purring goodness.

Re: the Art of Racing in the Rain

Now that we are nicely off topic, and speaking of puppy mills and rescues...

I inherited (through a fairly complex bit of family "not my problem" trades) a stray mutt that came with her recently (4 weeks ago) birthed litter.  5 small pups: 4 males and 1 female.  The mother looks like a schnauzer mutt, but more mutt than schnauzer.  The pups appear to be more lab or shepard: 2 white, 2 mixed brown and one black.  They should be fully weaned by the time of the CMP race.  If anyone is interested, contact me via email.

My wife brought this book home for me a month or two ago. I started reading it last week, got through the first chapter and set it down. We lost a string of all our animals to cancer a few years ago and it still stings a bit.

Last night I picked it back up... and immediately noticed all my new animals (all rescues) keep cuddling around me when I read.

Can't imagine life without them goofy critters.

Great book, and Garth Stein, the author, is a Seattle local.  I've had the chance to meet the guy a couple times, super nice guy.

Re: the Art of Racing in the Rain

I picked that up at BWI and read it while waiting on a flight to Raliegh. I was in tears at the beginning; I can't stand anything bad happening to a dog. The lady sitting next to me was trying not to stare at me. Speaking of dogs, my family just picked up a puppy from a Raleigh pet rescue place while I was out of town for two weeks for work, then took off for three days as soon as I landed. We have no fence, no pet gates, two extremely antisocial cats, and a new puppy that looks like a Black Lab mix and just wants to run around finding stuff to chew up and new places to crap. I have been running around and not sleeping getting the house set up and house training it. I think this is payback for all of those nights spent working on race cars.

Its an easy read, has some good points for racers. And Your wives and all their GFs will love it and maybe understand you a little better.

I think this should be in the kit of every Lemons driver, along with the wig, a dress, heels, mexican Wrestler mask, and your divers gear.

I don't have the wig, dress, or heels.

I do think a copy of the original 'Stroker Ace' should be in everybody's kit as well.
