Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

only in Lemons will the nearly 40 yr old Nova be picked ahead of the newer corvette.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

If you're going to build a turbine car, it should be something totally stupid that will make the normals feel that their hold on reality is slipping. Thus, Nova > Corvette.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

well, the guy has plans tonight but says he'll hold the car for me till tomorrow. I've had that kind of stuff go bad before so i won't know till the car is in my possession.

but barring the guy selling it from under me or being an overly rusty basket case, I'll be the owner of a 1975 Nova Tomorrow.

it'll get painted in Frankenstein Motorworks livery (i'll post a picture tonight). we'll probably tub the rear and put 32x12.5r15's in the rear as long as i can find something with reasonable traction that isn't violating the 200 tread wear rules. and probably a wheelie bar for show.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

If it's a turbine car, it needs to be a Chrysler.

An M-body New Yorker would be perfect.

EDIT: A Nova? Well, that'll do.

Hey, I had a beater Nova much like that one 20 years ago!

how does that video have 2,866 views?

but hey, anything that makes it more likely to pull trophies in makes it better in my book! smile

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

It has a lot of views because I posted it on Jalopnik, back when I worked there.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

here's the appropriate livery:

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/944/FrankensteinMotorworksLivery.jpg

it's based on the logo for my very small MR2 modification operation (i sell kits to drop 2gr-fe V6's into MKII MR2's)
http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/FMLogo.jpg

the livery was drawn for a 944 which i'm trying to bring to next season but it'll fit just fine on the Nova also.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

well, i now have a 1975 Chevy nova.

anyone want a 250CI (4.1L) I6 with a turbo 350 trans? both run as good as i can tell without brakes on the car.

at first i thought the motor was running like crap but then i found that the choke was on smile

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

all i need now is a powerglide transmission and i have all the major components for the build...

i could probably use the turbo 350, the 1st gear is quite low. but if it does not work out, the powerglide should bolt right up to the same bolt pattern.

the car has a 2.73:1 final drive.

the turbine wants to shift at 6000RPM and the z-drive has an 18% gear reduction.

the Turbo 350 has these gears: 2.52, 1.52, 1.0

so 1st goes to 60mph
2nd to 100mph
and 3rd to 151mph.

that's probably quite workable actually. especially for a 1st go around solution.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

Keep the inline 6 and mounts radiator etc, if the turbine fails swap the piston engine back in to finish the race.

i suspect too much will need to be changed in the engine bay for that to be feasible. but for the little amount of cash i could get for the motor, it may be worth hanging onto until i know for sure that it won't work.

i found the hydraulic circuit chart for the TH350:

does anyone have a shift chart? like this but for the TH350:

Its probably wise to keep the engine.  I'm sure this project will work so well that you will decided to put the Jet engine in your Daily Driver, and this way you'll still have a motor you can drop in the nova so you can keep racing it.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

I will ocasionally drive this thing on the street, just because i can. but driving something with this poor fuel economy on a regular basis just isn't going to happen.

plus, my Daily driver in the summer is an MR2, just what i'm avoiding putting this in and it already has more power than the jet engine anyways smile

anyways, got it home:
http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/phase4/IMG_0157.JPG

the lovely engine bay:

the only rust issue that isn't cosmetic:
http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/phase4/IMG_0161.JPG

i suspect the original owner brought lots of salt in regulrly and never washed it the rest of the car does not reflect the same level of damage.

oh well, they sell replacement panels for that area for $60, it's not really even worth trying to fake it with sheet metal and rivets, i'll probably fix it properly.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

Looks like you should have plenty of room to work in the engine bay, and compared to the mr2 your used to the interior must seem enormous.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

the engine is pretty long so it will still be tight, but overall, it should be much better.

as for the interior, there's enough room to feng shui the cage in here. Properly caging an MR2 is an exercise in frustration.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

someone asked to see the T50 manual i'm reading so i figured i'd upload it for everyone: http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/Airpl … Manual.pdf

Enjoy!

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

Sat down and did the initial wiring harness:

http://frankensteinmotorworks.com/AirplaneMR2/phase4/Wiring%20harness.jpg

obviously it needs a kill switch and i'm debating making the oil pressure switch kill the fuel automatically. but this will work for the first round.

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

Now put the 250 out of the Nova into an E30!

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

if you BS exempt a supercharger setup you might be able to see that happen.

but you want me focusing on other things anyways. i just got a magazine with 5 pages of technical details about the rotary vee motor. i'm still excited about possibly making one of those some day!

Re: airplane powered car, with the correct engine this time.

well, damn.

the mechanical fuel pump is pretty gummed up from things i can't even imagine.

there's a bit of moisture in there also so there's a bit of rust to deal with in the fuel pump. the rest of the motor looks clean. i suspect the fuel pump was swapped at some point in the recent past. the lack of safety wire on those bolts is a pretty good indicator that it's been messed with also.

anyways, it just means a full disasembly of the fuel pump but there should be no issues with that since i have the rebuild manual.

everything else in the motor looks great so i won't disasemble further than that unless the ore first fire tests show anything. no pictures with this since the pump is sitting in a bath of automatic transmission fluid right now to loosen everything.
