Topic: I needs help from someone that can match patina on an old paint job

I've got a friend that builds lots of fun cars, he got his hands on an old power wagon that he did a frame off restoration on all the drivetrain suspension and frame but he wants to do this one differently. he kept the body as-is since it's solid. but someone primered the hood and he wants to undo that.

as you can see in the pictures below, the hood already has rust it just is the wrong color. does anyone know someone that can reproduce something like the rest of the truck?

so how about it guys, any thoughts? the truck is currently in north east indiana but he's probably willing to travel a fair bit to get this done.

get as close of a match as you can to the existing paint in a single stage paint

Do not sand the hood, just clean and degrease, spray the matching paint right over it, light coats, not too much.

Wet sand with about 600-1000 until you hit the rusty spots again and have some primer showing through.

Rub out any remaining sanding marks with rubbing compound.

Let it sit in the sun to get the baked look of the rest of the truck or buff the rest of the truck to match the "polish" on the hood.

Try searching powerblock.tv I think it is. I remember watching a show where they did a "shop truck" that had the old look to it. They used some commercially available paint system to do it. Dunno much, as it was a while ago I seen the show. But you might be able to fine some info on it.

Yep, that could help too.  Honestly if you stop at the rubbing compound and dont go on to polishing it will be fairly flat already.

I remember that show.  It was an episode of Trucks!

They achieve the look by painting several layers and then wet sanding through the layers to produce the patina.

that faux-tina looks good, but i suspect it would not look that great next to real patina.

personally i think he should just paint the hood a matching green and call it good, but some of the stuff i am seeing here is giving me ideas.

if he just paints it green then sands it thin in some areas and parks it outside, it should match within a few years.

Patina is overrated. That truck looks great, and the color under the hood is awesome. Paint the rest of the truck like the engine bay, and with the chrome trim it will look awesome.

Not that this aids in answering your question in any way, shape, or form, but I'd leave the hood in mis-matched form. It really suits the patina/beater theme of the rest of the truck pretty nicely, and aids in the contrast of the kickass engine (and I assume driveline). FWIW, YMMV, IMHO, LMNOP, etc.

yeah, leaving it primer/rust is what i'm trying to talk him into.

As for the driveline, this truck is imaculate. the body has been off, the frame powder coated and every last bracket brought back to factory spec or better. this guy has a ridiculous attention to detail, I'll have to go there with a camera some day and snap some more pictures to droll at.

This is the only vehicle he's ever considered leaving the patina alone on. everything else is spotless, it's a heck of a contrast. heck, just look in the background of most of the pictures.

the vehicle i find the neatest is a subaru kei car (not sure what model) with a goldwing drivetrain. he's also got a isetta with a flat 4 veedub drivetrain. a bug with a wankel. a veedub bus with a toyota van 4x4 drivetrain and motorhome style interior.
