Topic: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

We loved the gnome, sometimes we loved the gnome transporter box truck even more...

But the gnome got sold! The box truck moved on to a team of acrobats. What to do?

Well we went out and bought another stupid motorcycle powered car:

I know what you're thinking. So what. That's lame. Nobody cares.

Agreed!

But as Michael Bolton so eloquently put it in his Tale of Captain Jack Sparrow: "Now back to the good part!"

What was really missing in our lives? What would make that hole in our hearts feel less dark, cold, and empty? The answer was obvious. More box truck.

I present to you, the Black Iron Racing MRsaki Bombay Sapphire Gin & Transporter!

Gestapo inspired CA smog rules have unleashed a giant steaming pile of super cheap commercial trucks, as the only way a company can legally operate this thing past the end of this year is to replace the engine with a 2010 spec engine. What's a guy to do? Well we just register it as a much cheaper to insure, fully smog exempt, privately owned RV of course! Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

The box truck pron is all visible here:

We're planning to pimp the thing out with all manners of mobile race weekend luxuries such as cheapo chinese generator, spare fuel tanks zip tied securely under the box, and even a mini fridge permanently stocked with diet coors inside. See you suckas at the track next year!

That is down right crazy.  Small business owners can't afford that type of BS.  I understand wanting clean air but making a vehicle the opposite compliant but that many years is as bad as cash for clunkers.

So glad I don't live in California anymore.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

That is a bad ass truck!

It really is a wakeup call to all of us.  Privately owned, legally purchased backhoes, bobcats, forklifts as well as on road trucks instantly made useless by government decree.  Has also happened with some 2 stroke engine watercraft in some areas.  If this can happen to an industry with as much influence as the construction and trucking industry, why would we believe our sport is safe?

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

this kinda explains why I'm seeing more diesel engines for sale on craigslist lately.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

This is not much different than when they mandated noise restrictions on commercial aircraft in the 1990's.  It was retroactive and cause the deportation (resale to non-complaint countries) of normally viable 727 freight aircraft.  Though Nordam and Rolls Royce came up with compliant solutions...they were not financially viable.

So not new, just a more "applicable" audience that we can all relate to.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

I'm all for progress, and the country would be unbearable without the emissions and noise reduction progress that's been made.  But when it comes to existing, privately owned, and legally purchased equipment, it should be grandfathered in and let normal attrition remove the vast majority.  Or pony up the money to buy the stuff at fair value.

Boeing 727's were not that efficient to own and there are not the number of them flying in the skies.  Most airlines had retired them but as corporate jets it made sense to upgrade them to stage 3 noise compliance and get better efficiency from the new fans

I was only using the 727 as the most extreme example.  Southwest Airlines had a lot of aircraft retired as the early 737's had similar issues.

Still, I was only using it as example of what has been happening for years.

Chicago has done it with fire safety in mid and low rise buildings.

I am sure if we think hard enough we can all come up with an example.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

Look on the bright side.  If it wasn't for California wanting clean air Dan would have had to pay much more for this truck.  Oh, and we get cleaner air.  Win win!

Cars, cameras, and easy living...

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

The Air Force had to upgrade a lot of the heavies as well. That's why the KC-135Es got converted to KC-135Rs. In the long run I think it's been a great thing - more power (can take off with heavier fuel loads), better fuel efficiency, and much less maintenance than the old P&Ws. The AWACs got an exemption. They're still annoyingly noisy and the maintenance crews always seem to have the engine cowls open.

Definitely jealous of your new tow rig.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

Clearly, if you can afford to live in California, this law shouldn't be a problem for you.

Guess again.

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

The cynic in me says laws like this don't pass unless there is a lot of money behind them. Hippies don't have money. Maybe someone wanted to sell some more trucks.

I wish I could afford to pick up one of these trucks.

Some truth to this. One of the reasons for these types of laws is to help stimulate the economy. It will mean building and selling more trucks as well as building, selling, and installing retrofit parts. Which means more jobs.

But it's not a "law" that gets voted on.  It's a regulation that is passed by CARB not by elected officials and due process...

Re: Box Truck 2.0, Even Boxier

So, no one in CARB has any ties to the industry at all?

On topic, I really like that low profile truck.  How bad do the fenders intrude into the box, and will that affect loading a car?

Unfortunately, current situation dictates that I own a tow vehicle a) with 4 wheel drive, b) with at least 4 seats, and c) that has an open bed for hauling bulk stuff like dirt, stone, and mulch.  So, and F350 it is *at least not a dually)

The wheel wells only rise up about 4-5" over the rest of the floor. Not sure if we'll go wood or metal ramps to get over those, but it shouldn't be too bad.

We have a wrap around work bench/shelf installed in the front of the box now. Installed the 2000W inverter and a decent sized mini fridge last night. Next up is a microwave, propane tank, and catalytic heater, then our RV conversion steps will be complete.

Obviously meant Tinker (home of the AWACS') as I am pretty sure the Vance is only still open because it would be a Superfund site if they closed it down.  i guess Altus could be come into play but i am not sure actual humans still live in the part of OK anymore.
