Topic: Push to Talk Question

Will any momentary switch work for a push to talk?

I've lost a lot, but the Fairlane finally won an IoE.

Re: Push to Talk Question

Yes, there is nothing special about a PTT switch, other than it should be pretty rugged.
You could even re-purpose the horn button.

Re: Push to Talk Question

Definitely any momentary contact switch.

What we use is from a DIY aircraft supplier - not especially rugged but packaged up as a PTT which is a time saver. Weakest point is that the cable isn't held tightly going into the switch body. Some plastic glue fixed that. (I'm going to bring a push button switch as a just in case backup.)

http://www.aircraftspruce.com/pages/av/ptt/icomptt.php - $19.50 - ignore that it's "for" an ICOM radio - it's just a switch. They also now have one for $12.95.

Shortly after I got that PTT I saw exactly the same switch at a shop on a 25hrs of Thunderhill car. Except it had a Racing Electronics Inc. sticker on it. That sticker must be worth $40 because at REI that PTT is $60 - http://www.racingelectronics.com/product-p/re503.htm

That's true of some racing radio items - attach the word "racing" and the price goes up 2-3X. I don't mind paying more for quality or added value. Not for stickers.

Horn button was a bad idea, in my experience.  I tried it and there was too much resistance in the circuit even with the "wiper" and "ring" contact being cleaned up.  YMMV

ALLEGEDLY!
