Topic: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Race tool storage question for the assembled geniuses. My trusty Craftsman 26" tool chest (bottom, mid, and top box) are is pretty trashed out after 20+ Lemons races over the years. This last race is pretty much the nail in the coffin, as the key drawer (metric sockets) isn't working very well due to the case getting tweaked (again) on the trailer. I've tried various other tool totage/storage methods, but the ones that are easier for toting are horrible for on-site use. I've looked at the 44" and 56" HF chests on sale recently but I'm reluctant to get those because the weight of the loaded chest would be more than we could easily lift onto the trailer for races. I guess we could build a ramp cover and winch it up. We use an open trailer for race travel FWIW.

So I'm looking for suggestions for the replacement tool chest. Needs to hold a lot of hand tools and be portable but used in the home shop/garage too. Does anybody else have a good idea? Thx.

(PS Here's the HF 44". I don't like that I can't get all the 1/2" tall sockets in any drawer other than the top one of the bottom chest, but otherwise it might be the best affordable option out there. I'm not willing to spend four figures on a Snap On, etc)

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

I would advise you not to move your home chest. They just are not meant for that level of moving around.

Grab a number of "task" boxes or specific tools boxes. For instance have one box JUST for sockets on rails and ratchets. One for power tools. one for bits and drivers. one for fab smashing. get a good tongue box or other locker for the trailer and load them all in there.

I've had my eye on the HF 44 bottom for over a year now, there's some things you have to do to make them a bit sturdier, there's some videos on youtube that show people re-enforcing them and putting better casters on and such. Like most things at HF it's a good 90% ready to go kind of thing. But I doubt they will deal well with being dragged around.

Think like stuff like this set up with some idiot proof inventory packing so nothing gets left behind either direction.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Funny you should say that. We tried that method already using some really nice RIGID stacking/interlocking bins from Home Depot. They toted great, but the lack of drawers meant that when we were fixing stuff at the track, we had tools and sockets EVERYWHERE in our paddock space and it wasn't organized at all. Not so much of a problem with just 1 guy working on stuff, but when you have 5 guys all working separate problems simultaneously, we ended up spending 50% of our time just trying to find tools. I was ready to gouge out my eyes.

Although those boxes have small drawers. That might be an idea. Not sure where we'd stack them though. Would have to take more tables. Hmm.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Hi Pat, here's a couple I found.  The first one looks like it is a 26".

My 26" Snap-On didn't cost near as much (well under $1k for both top and bottom) 30 years ago as it does today but it still works like the day I bought it.  My Waterloo died not too many years after getting it.  We use a 1/4" steel plate for transition from the shop to trailer ramp as it weighs hundreds of pounds.

The Crapsman I have bolted to the floor in our enclosed trailer has ball bearings and has worked flawlessly for over 15 years.  The drawer latches work so good, I don't even lock it when traveling.  We use this one for consumables, test equipment and larger items.

It would scare the heck out of me if I had to put a lifetime tool collection on a open trailer.

Sounds like you need more this style box from Montezema.  http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/ … _200395353  Has door seals for running in a truck/on a trailer and when open the tools are easily accessible...

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

We use the big, red HF tool cart. It can accommodate all the tools we typically use at home or the track, so I use it as the primary box for wrenching on the car wherever we are.

We used to use the smaller HF tool cart, which was really easy to move. However, it was just a bit too small, so I'd move tools back and forth between the big "home" box and small "track" cart. The new solution works better because I keep all the tools in the same place at home or the tack, so the team can always find them in the same spot.

To facilitate transport, we leave the base unbolted from the box and just set the box on its support rails in the base. We can then load it in the truck as two separate pieces. It still take about 3 fellas and is a bit awkward, but it's possible and happens infrequently enough that I feel OK optimizing for consistent organization over all out portability.

You can see how we have the box corners bolted together for rigidity, but we've cut the base down in front to make it easier to lift the box out:

(Yes, that can probably be cut flush and the jagged edge could be finished...)

I definitely don't expect this to last forever, but I think we've taken it to 6 or 7 races since we got it and it's been great so far.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Ok, I'm missing something (not surprising, considering I'm crazy enough to race an Austin Marina). I have the same HF tool cart (big red one) and finally just bought an enclosed trailer. My plan was to leave it stock, wheel it into the trailer, strap it to the side of the trailer, then wheel it off once I'm at the race and need it.  Why cut it into two pieces?

I would only recommend the bin totes for power tools with the cords properly wrapped and kept. My current Primary Tool box is the second one pictured. It works really well the drawers are not as deep as full drawers so some full size toolbox organizer stuff won't fit, but there's still a lot of DIY organization options available. I'm now severely outgrowing it and wish I could get the HF44" bottom to put in my garage, but fully loaded it's still solid and has held up well.

I'd say yea grab another polly table for tools if you don't just have them lined up on the trailer when the car is off it.

Oh and because I was reminded of it at Summit Racing today when I was drooling over it. The Kenedy style boxes are magic, but not cheap.

Because we typically transport it in a covered pickup bed, so it must be lifted into place. Because the bed has a cap, the tool cart can't be transported on its wheels, so we have to load the box and base separately.  If we had enclosed trailer with a ramp or anything with a lift gate, we'd definitely do what you're planning. However, we're not currently so-equipped.

Also, it's already two pieces. Chopping the corners lowers the if height required to clear the base when loading into truck.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I think for now we're going to give the $189 HF one a try, the price is right and we can probably cut down the tools we ship to the race from all of the ones in the shop. If that doesn't work, then back to the drawing board.

Oh, and I have looked at those Beta tool cases longingly. They had a setup at PRI this year that was very, very nice, but way expensive.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

We've been able to squeeze everything into the cheaper and lighter ($99 on sale regularly) HF rolling cart/box. http://www.harborfreight.com/tool-stora … 95659.html It took some discipline to eliminate stuff that we really don't need and we do carry a flip-top-tote with automotive specialty tools (timing light, brake bleeder, etc.).  It's worked well for us.  We have added a magnetic paper towel holder and a disposable glove dispenser which work well too.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

I was looking into these top chests.  I was thinking that they would be manageable to lift with two people, and you could store them on an bench in the garage for when you are not racing.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Last weekend, we loaded what we hope to be everything we need, and nothing that we don't, into the $189 model in preparation for the upcoming race at Eagles Canyon. We don't have anything critical on the floor of the tool cart, but we'll probably come up with something eventually. Will report back after we go through a race and see how it works under fire.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

Ok, reporting back as promised. All in all, I'm very happy with the performance and storage capacity of this unit for a Lemons race. The drawers are sturdy and operate more nicely than I'd expect on a unit for this price, and our entire set of sockets in metric and SAE, from 1/4" drive up to 1/2" drive and all the extensions and modifiers all fit in the top section with some room to spare..

In fact, I don't think that there was a tool that we really needed which we didn't have with us. We need to modify it slightly, as it's too tall to fit under the tire rack on our trailer, but that's an easy fix, all things considered. It was much lighter (since we couldn't really overload it) which made loading & unloading easier too. Would buy it again.

Two thumbs up, one thumb 3/4 of the way up, and one more thumb up (that's for you, Dave).

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

I have one those 30" red HF carts. Good value for money spent. It's my go-to box for sockets, ratchets, air impact, hammers, etc.

Make sure you use a square when bolting it together or it will lean to the right more than Hillary, but less than Cruz. Oh snap.

I think if I had one of those $369 HF rollaways, I could fit all my tools in it and dump the two big full-height stacks of Craftsman boxes I have.

But for racing, it's nice to have Brett's Cornwell (Cromwell?) bench-height 30" roller for 90% of our tools.

Re: Tool Storage & Toting Ideas Sought

I brought a 40" stainless craftsman box to about 10 races. It's big enough that it's difficult to"tweak" and I'd expect it to be more rigid than the HF models.
