Topic: Volvo help

I was looking at this car for my wife:

Any estimate on how hard it would be to replace the odometer gear?  We have emissions in this state, so I need to have a working odometer.

Re: Volvo help

Worst case scenario you could replace the cluster.

Re: Volvo help

Not hard to do. Did it on a 97 850 GLT sedan.

Got parts from FCP Euro or eEuroparts...

Re: Volvo help

Volvo 850s are laughably easy to find in junkyards these days. You'll have your pick of clusters for $20.

Re: Volvo help

I did it one Sunday morning on my 1996 850 Turbo.   Quick and easy.   2.5 hours, start to finish.

Re: Volvo help

Those cars in general are pretty straightforward to work on. I had a turbo wagon; the glt is non-turbo I think? If so then it's even easier to work on. The turbo takes up some room in the engine bay and removing intercooler pipes is a frequent first step on some jobs.

A tip - it looks like the front seats are torn up. If you can find one with dark gray seats in the junkyard for some reason the dark gray leather holds up better. I snagged a pair of perfect front seats out of a '99 and it fit my '96 and looked great and held up well.

And (nearly) EVERY ONE will have busted ODO gears. Just spend the $59 and take it apart once for the next 100k.  smile

That's okay.  Here in south-central PA, Volvos are not that prevalent in junkyards.  Well, they just are not prevalent around here, period.

That's a new one, where does it actually SAY that on the books? Because I ran my 300TD for 5 years without working speedo or odometer, smog passed every time, and used to throw different clusters in my Audi Coupes all the time, this made the recorded mileage stand still or go backwards year to year.  That's AZ, true, but since the little wheels ticking away don't effect emissions one iota, and the test duration ISNT determined by odometer reading, I can't see the correlation. What, does PA have a minimum number of miles you have to drive every year to maintain registration??
