Topic: Looking for Nerdy Books on Car Racing

Hey,

I looking to learn up on all aspects of race car performance, and I'm am in need of some good resources.  Kind of like these articles on MotoIQ but even more in depth and on many more topics.  I figure I'm an engineer why can't I learn to do it like the pro's.  Here is a list of topics I can list of the top of my head.

intake manifold design and tuning
exhaust header design and tuning
turbo manifold design
inter-cooler sizing
cylinder head design
suspension setup
Ackermann geometry
other things named after guys I have never heard of
crankshaft design
cam design and selection
cam timing
chassis design
ecu tuning
piston ring gaping
traction control setup
break pad and disk design
turbo design and sizing
dynamic vehicle analysis like weight transfer under breaking and such
gearbox design
gear ratio selection
carb tuning
aero stuff (I did major in Aeronautical Engineering though)

That just kinda gives and idea of what I'm interested in.  The nerdier the better I good for any math and such that comes my way.  There is no way that I can learn everything this instant, and to be honest I would need a few more runs though those MotoIQ articles before I fully under stood them.  I am looking for a set of resources that I can pull from when the time arrives.

Right now, engine building has peaked my interest.  For instance I know that a properly designed intake can improve engine breathing in some parts of the rev range.  But how do you design your intake for low or high end power.  I know it has to do with the harmonics of the engine and the resonating frequency of the intake runner,  but I do not know the direct relationship.  How does plenum volume effect it?

Any fingers in the right directions would be helpful.

Look for "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacInnes. Old school but has great fundamentals. Pre-computer days when all enrichment and timing had to be done mechanically. Cool read.

Re: Looking for Nerdy Books on Car Racing

I have been enjoying Carroll Smiths books, as mentioned.  You might like Engineer to Win, which is a follow up to tune to win. It focuses a lot on material science which is cool.

There are a bunch of them: http://www.carrollsmith.com/books/index.html
