Topic: All-Terrain tires to fit a stupid small rim? (14x4.5")

I'm trying to find all-terrain tires to fit on my art car, because it occasionally gets taken to outdoor off-road-type events, and it has an open diff. The wheels I have for it are 14". What's worse, they're only 4.5" wide. The tires on them now are 185/75-14. So far, the only all-terrains I'm even seeing in 14 are hecka wide and probably won't even fit on my rims, let alone in the wheelwells.

Any thoughts? Supposedly they used to make BFG All-Terrains in 195/70-14, but no longer. I have a guy at Discount Tire looking around to see if anybody's got some in a warehouse somewhere.

I considered ATV tires, but they'd also have to be good for highway use.

Dirtbike tires on space saver steelies.  It's been done and it dominates on dirt.

Would something like these Winterforce snow tires be grippy enough for your application?

Otherwise, why not move up to a bigger rim size that has a better off road tire selection? Or is it something a bit odd-ball that makes that difficult?

Fourteen time loser. You'd think I'd know better by now.

Re: All-Terrain tires to fit a stupid small rim? (14x4.5")

I don't want to change wheels, mostly due to expense and the low availability of wheels in the old Mopar small bolt pattern (5 on 4"). It's another '64 Dodge Dart, actually our old parts car.

I didn't think to look at winter tires. Mud is my primary concern, but I suppose it's not much different than snow. Those Winterforce tires might be good enough, and they're definitely in my desired price range. Any idea how cheap winter tires hold up on dry pavement?

You might want to look into some tire shops that are overseas.  Classic mini's run 10"-13" wheels and I would put money on the fact that some one makes offroad tires for them.  Also some pre-2003 Fiat Pandas came with 14" wheels.  They made a Panda 4x4 so i am sure you can get some off road rubber.

Here's some I found

We had a similar problem on our stock '89 Nissan Sentra on 14" steel wheels that we use as a rally car. Snow tires work well for dirt and can be driven on in the street, but the sidewalls are very thin, like a piece of cloth, and will de-bead easily if driven too aggressively in dirt. I ended up buying some 14" car tire inner tubes from eBay for $6/each and mounting the snow tires with the tubes. That actually works really well. It's a stock '89 Sentra (TBI 1.6L) with an automatic and it never gets stuck. The tires are General Altimax Arctic from Tire Rack:
