Topic: enduro cage

We are a new team (hopefully) and are using a BMW E36 as our project.  We are planning to use an Allstar Mini Enduro cage for the job.  Can anyone tell me if this will pass tech before we start welding?  Looking at the rules and diagrams, I am concerned about spreader plate locations.  I don't want to get it done and find out we can't do it as planned.

Re: enduro cage

unlikely that anyone has used this specific cage.

if you can articulate your exact concern, we can maybe help.

Re: enduro cage

The only thing I can find online is the cage that fits an Escort and can be modified to fit a Neon or a Probe. I couldn't find one specific for an E36. The ones I found do not have rear stays which you will have to add. It also doesn't have a rear diagonal or harness bar and would need an additional bar for the passenger side.

Unless you get a kit made for your specific car you're asking for a big headache.

Re: enduro cage

That is exactly the kit we have.  I have used this kit in other applications with great success.  My biggest concern is with mounting points.  Most of the diagrams in the rules show the spreader plates mounted horizontally to the floor.  The kit we have has down tubes welded to horizontal tubes which weld to the body using spreader plates at the ends.  These plates would be welded to the body vertically behind the driver and to the firewall vertically in front.  We have all the additional bars to add for diagonals, doors, etc.

This configuration is explicitly prohibited for backstays (as you probably noticed on p.14 of the "How Not To Fail..." handbook) so my guess is Lemons HQ wouldn't be happy about it for the main downtubes, either. Still, this is the sort of question that should go directly to John Pagel: pagel@24hoursoflemons.com

Re: enduro cage

Cages intended for other applications have a terrible passing rate in Lemons.
The cage is not an area to take a chance. Print out the Lemons cage specs, hand them to a professional and have a cage built specifically for your car.

Re: enduro cage

Well, that stinks.  Guess I'm glad I asked before I started welding it up, though.  Thanks.
