Topic: The Hole in the Block Gang

New member here. #1 went through the side and peeled back the front half of the pan. The guys seemed quite pleased.

Our pit neighbors did the same with #1 in turn 1 of lap 1 on Saturday of their first race in Lemons. Coasted to turn 2, somehow, they said. They were adamant that they made it past turn 1. They put in a backup motor and returned to racing later that day.

I met another guy later Sunday whose team also joined the club.

Jay should make patches for members of such an exclusive club, one that eventually everyone in Lemons will join.

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

Well done, sir! This was in the tinyvette? We wondered where you went on day two. Sorry for the trouble and hope to see you at T-Hill.

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

Yep, that was us.

I've learned a lot about engines this year. This was our first ever rod-throw, though.

We'll be ready for Thunderhill.

Maybe not as impressive as your results, but I think it still buys me entrance into the exclusive Lemons Window Club for my Prelude at the 2015 Loudon race!

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

I have tried to get Jay to make merit-badge-style patches for junkyard engine swaps during race weekend, holes in engine block, etc., but he seems unenthusiastic. Never mind that the IOE patches were my idea, and those were a hit.

Sincerely, THANKS for the IOE patches!

I'm down for the merit badge swaps as well. If I can help somehow, tell me which congressperson to write to.

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

Welcome to the club.  It's safe to say that membership doesn't come with any perks reclaimable for even a discount breakfast.

Now the merit badges might be kinda cool...Ideas...

Thrown rod
Thrown rods  (multiples - at the same time or in sequence after a sketchy beer can patch job)
Drive it till the wheels fall off (sheared studs, broken hub, or otherwise lost wheel on track)
Layin' Pipe (dragging muffler)
Welded brake backing plates to the rotor.

Ive got four of the above..

He's a new man now, part of the machine,
His nerves of metal and his blood oil.
The clutch curses, but the gears obey,
His least bidding, and lo, he's away.

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

We've taken it upon ourselves to create our own perpetual trophy for the most unfortunate member of the team at each race.  This young man, who undoubtedly puts in the most work on our cars, watched in eager anticipation as our 3rd engine (out of 2 cars) got blowed up about 5 minutes before his stint was to begin.  Sadly we have not yet joined the "Hole in the Block Gang" but trust me, we're working on it.

You'll want something stronger than the finest Swedish cast iron down there. Trust me.

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

I've been told we can patch the block by brazing a piece of steel to it. Sounds appropriately LeMony. Does anyone see a problem with this idea?

Seems like overkill if you ask me....

As long as it's not part of the structure supporting the mains, it should be fine.  Otherwise, all you're trying to do is keep oil from leaking.

As long as we're sharing pix of our little holes....

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

I can't find the picture of the engine, but here's some of the carnage from MSR 2014. I think that chunk of camshaft still lives in the toolbox.

If that's not enough, here's the old engine from my daily driver.

YES!

"Drive it till the wheels fall off (sheared studs, broken hub, or otherwise lost wheel on track)"

Looks like I have a natural talent for this!

Re: The Hole in the Block Gang

I personally only did the brake pad welding part, but my team did all except throwing a single rod. Because when Super K throws a rod, it throws two for good measure.
