Topic: Tow Rig Parking

My rally car is not ideal for flogging on the interstate, so I'm intending to tow from Oregon to Monterey and back. Is there anywhere we can leave our Land Rover Discoveries or '90s Ford Explorers and trailers during the rally?

Previous Rally Cars: 1971 Opel Kadett, 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24, 1998 Volvo V90 (5.0L), 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 (turbocharged 351W)

Good, good. This is precisely as it should be.

None of which I'm aware. Certainly nothing near the start/finish, unless you want to risk parking for several days on some random side street. That seems particularly unwise during Monterey Car Week, though. Your best bet is to try arranging something directly with someone who lives in the area.

Yeah, I'd find a Lemons team in/around the Bay and see if you can drop off the tow rig there, then drive down to Monterey.

I'm in Gilroy, about an hour from Monterey.  If it's not too big and/or obnoxious, you can leave it here.

Re: Tow Rig Parking

I know some people in Santa Rosa, that's about 3 hours according to Google.

Re: Tow Rig Parking

I know someone from Monterey and I asked a while back about leaving my car at her place (previous plan) and she mentioned that you could park it at the airport, granted it would cost some money.

Our backup car / way to get back to Florida incase of fire is being left in Northern Arizona. I'm very hesitant to bring any of my personal vehicles into California as I am sure they are borderline impoundable

A couple years ago we looked at RV storage places in Salinas to drop a car/hauler combo for a couple weeks inbetween races.  The places we talked to were amenable to that for reasonable cost.

Just an '03 Land Rover Discovery and small single axle race-car trailer. Nothing too obnoxious. Gilroy is right on the way there, might be a good place.

Sounds easy enough.  Best to email me if you decide to leave it here, bshorey at yahoo.  I don't seem to get updates to threads on this forum.

Re: Tow Rig Parking

Cool, thanks. If my rally car just had a 5-speed, I would drive it the whole way. I took it on the interstate for a bit last week, it's not ideal. I don't know how the Tinyvette raced at all with an Opel 4-speed. If I keep this car after the rally, it's definitely getting a Getrag.

Re: Tow Rig Parking

Tow rigs are for sissies.  We drive last year's rally car from Los Angeles, finished the rally, then drove it home.

What was the car? I'm coming from much further away than LA.

My car has 80-ish horsepower and a 4-speed.

Re: Tow Rig Parking

We're planning to drive, 102 hp and a 2 speed automatic trans. And a little bit of oil pressure. We'll see how far we get. It's something like 800-900 miles for us to get to Monterey.

Towing the car there would be smart. But this is the Lemons Rally....smart is something we don't see to often (except in Amanda's case)

Well, my tow rig will probably be a $500 '97 Ford Explorer...

I'm considering driving the car. Still some shakedown to do.

That's not bad, but last year I drove my rally vehicle from Seattle carrying my Concours d'Lemons vehicle in the back, finished the rally, entered the concours, drove home, then took both of them to the following weekend's Lemons race so the Cd'L entry could be used as a judgemobile.

(Admittedly all this was the hastily-assembled backup plan after my original rally vehicle destroyed its transmission halfway through Oregon on the way there. I'll try driving it there again this year.)

We're planing on driving an MG Midget (65 horsepower and a 4 speed) from MN to Monterey.
If your car can make it in the rally, it can make it to the rally.

That said, we are budgeting an extra day or too on the return trip.

Sweet! If you want to abandon the car in Oregon, I have a 200+ hp LX9 V6 and a T5 that would look great in it.

I'm warming up to the idea of driving the Kadett there and back. It's much quieter with a new muffler and running very nicely with a multiport megasquirt EFI conversion. Hella cheaty.

Still trying to address some warmth issues at a sustained 60-70 MPH cruise speed.
