Topic: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

Staring at the ceiling:
They have front engine, front wheel drive and front engine, rear wheel drive; and rear engine rear wheel drive....why not rear engine, front wheel drive??

Ever hear of anything like this exist?....any ever built for Lemons?

Would this even work? Could this even be built? What would it drive like?

Enhanced ride via reduced noise, vibration, and harshness, and in lowered center of gravity providing improved handling, braking and roll characteristics. Its main disadvantage is the lack of weight over the drive wheels, particularly under hard acceleration as weight shifts to the rear.

According to (the always 100% correct) Wikipedia there are two examples of REFWD cars.

The Bucky Fuller Dymaxion.

A 1932 one-off from a Coleman Motors called the Maroon Car.

Clearly the evidence says a REFWD is a brilliant idea. Go forth and build it. Post when you are done.

Why not mid-engined fwd, like Chevy truck ifs and flip the engine, everything should spin the right way

Beautiful...!

But to build??? I would not know where to start...

I would probably just take a regular rear wheel drive car (with front engine), flip the body around, put it in reverse, and voila!

Anyone have a better idea?

I think there are few reversible differentials available that is from FWD.

Think reverse 944.  Dunno if the 944 is flippable but a VW bug/bus diff is.

Pull the engine & trans from front, mount backwards in back. Voila. REFWD

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

There's a good reason no one does this. It will not be enjoyable to drive. Rear biased weight, with nothing over the drive wheels. FWD burnouts and understeer for days.

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

OMG, this is awesomely lemony!     do it!

flipping a differential upside down will cause the wheels to rotate the other way.  (although it might cause lubrication issues)     If you find a rear differential from a vehicle with an independent rear, it's just a matter of merging the inner CV's from the diff, to the outer CV's from the steering wheels.

this is totally an IOE contender!

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

The Ford RS200 Group B rally car was mid-engined and all-wheel-drive. I think the Peugeot and Lancia Group B cars were similar setups. It's fairly complex, but there was a driveshaft running from rear to front, where the transfer case was.

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

then maybe mid-engine, AWD??

Like Nissan:

http://www.drifting.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2068

And all wheel steering???

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

Clearly the proper way to do mid-engine AWD is the way DAF did it, with the engine mounted sideways in the passenger compartment:

http://www.racehistorie.nl/daf/pgdaf4wiel.jpg

Note the position of the Variomatic transmission with respect to the steering wheel:

http://www.racehistorie.nl/daf/pgdaf4wielmotor.jpg

This made things a bit cramped but everything worked out okay with the addition of a bubble to the roof:

Easy!

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

I am still thinking about it...Rear engine, Front wheel drive....

(I wish I had the knowledge and wisdom (as well as time and money) to make my great ideas work....
I mean, this would probably cost me at least several marriages...)

Chevy truck...or VW bug....with a nice splitter in front to keep the nose down....
This can't be any worse than that VW bug with a Honda Odyssey 6 cylinder engine in the rear....
Hmmmm....

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

I'm really not seeing the problem with doing this. If a team can take a front straight axle from a jeep and stick it in the rear of a car to make a custom offset shaft, mid engine, rwd setup (angry hamsters), why can't the jeep's front axle just be left in the front and a rear or mid mounted engine be installed to drive that axle while it is up front?

Seriously. It's not that complicated. Use a Jeep or a Samurai or some other caveman 4wd system front axle, put a motor in the back, connect the dots and be done. if it doesn't spin the right way, pick a different motor that does. Or use the whole engine and trans from some fwd system, mount it in the rear but north-south, weld the diff, plug up one ouput shaft hole and use the other output shaft hole to attach a driveshaft to the diff with the other end of the driveshaft feeding the front axle/diff.

Gheebus, do I have to tell you all how to do EVERYTHING?

Re: Can't sleep: Rear engined-Front wheel Drive possible?

you make it sound so simple..."just add water and microwave on High for 2 minutes...."

I can't even figure out why my car won't start after running just fine and finishing the NJ race...

But I just might take your suggestion as a project over the dead New England winter
...but then if I win a trophy, I might need to give you part of it...or I could just invite you to drive it...

Wow...just when you thought "it's all been done in Lemons...!"

It's a pity the King Midget has only a 76.5" wheelbase:

Admittedly the chain only drives the right rear wheel, so you'd need to rig up something extra for the right front. Run a second chain forward to an idler shaft, then use a third, inboard chain to drive a conventional front wheel drive axle. Voilà! Propulsion, steering, and suspension travel.
