Just a quick update again.  Finally finished of the guide for the steering bar to keep it from pivoting on the end points.  Not real pretty but I have to make things functional at this point and go back for pretty later.

Starting on the body mockup and waiting for the cage guy to fit me in.  Hopefully working on the cooling system this weekend then its in my teammates hands for fuel and electrical.

Its getting there, but it's going to be close.

Close, similar, the same.  Early 944.  A friend is building an LS1 powered 944 and upgraded everything.  He traded me the whole suspension + brakes for an old Griffin 3 core I had sitting on a shelf.

Re: Still plugging away

Sorry for lack of updates, no very exiting (visually) progress until now.

Time for rear fenders.  We moved the wheelbase so the fenders didnt fit at all.

http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/rearfenderstock.jpg
Much to everyones disappointment I realized if I pulled the stock Porsche spacers out of the rear hubs I wouldnt need to flare the fenders.

Time is short and the fronts tuck under nicely so I couldn't envision a wildly flared rear with stock fronts.

The stock wheel arch extended into the rear door so first I cut that piece off the door.
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/reardoor.jpg

Next I welded it to the rest of the arch and cut that section away from the fender
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/archremoved.jpg

Here we see how much further the arch needs to come back
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/cutfender.jpg

I removed the metal behind the wheel and moved the whole arch back and tacked it in place.
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/newfender.jpg

Rear view, things are going to be tight, but we will put a fender roller on the whole thing once the filler pieces are welded in and bring the arch out by about an inch or so.

You realize of course, that you've left Lemons, and are now on "overhaulin" or some such don't you smile Nice work, though my wife would kill me if my garage environs looked like that!

Very cool!  I can't wait to see it finished.

Did you ever find a home for the original engine?

My wife is partially responsible.  The "front garage" 2 bays houses my Studebaker and mowers, snowblowers, etc.  The "back garage" 2.5 bays is the work area.  She just got a VW Thing (her dream car) so the lawn crap has invaded the work area and made organization difficult at best.

As far as "left Lemons" I agree, this is much more an effort for GRM and way over the top for Lemons.  I promise to kludge together our follow on MGB with bailing wire, duct tape and a BFH.

Not yet.  I want to stick it in a golf cart to use as a pit cart but havent found a suitable candidate yet.

There was interest from a man in canada who is restoring a DKW based formula car, I really wanted it to go there and live on in a race car but I havent heard from him in a while, I think the distance was just too much to overcome.

Re: Still plugging away

Of course now I've hacked up the door so tonite I went and filled it back in.  I was able to use the piece that was cut out behind the wheel to match the contour pretty close and require little reworking.
The trailing edge was folded under so when its all cleaned and painted it will look like a factory door skin crimped in place.
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/reardooroff.jpg

For the final part of the evening I mounted the door and did a quick alignment so I could have a line to work with on the filler piece required at the front of the fender.  Had to stop there for the night, needed to do some things around the house.

This is the part I enjoy most.  As annoying as bodywork can be this is the "art" portion of the project and I'm a frustrated artist.

Re: Still plugging away

Filled in the gap in the fender and did a quick mount.  Need to play with panel gaps a bit but its close.
http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/fenderroughfinal.jpg

Clearance is tight, but its there.  I'll hit this with a fender roller once its mounted solid and give it some breathing room.

If you're going to be in Kershaw in September I'll bring you your pick of two EZGO carts I have. One is a standard cart, the other has a small bed on the back. I'd love to see it done. PM me if interested.

That's "Rusty Jones"! An automotive rust inhibitor (tar) service. Not sure they are in busineess anymore. I used to live in the midwest and had the privledge of having the gingle etched in my brain for life. "Hello Rusty Jones...Goodbye rusty car!"

Re: Still plugging away

I recognized good ol' Rusty Jones right away.  We had our new 1981 Toyota pickup sprayed with it and within a few years, it was completely rusted out.  Of course, RJ wouldn't stand behind anything.  They always have one excuse or another as to why the rust wasn't their fault.  Oh well.

Hmmm - I wasn't aware of Rusty's character defects when I chose him for my avatar.

Re: Still plugging away

To be fair to Rusty, the 80's Toyota pickups seemingly corroded by the time they made it to the dealers much less after a few years of salty roads.

I wish you could too, Im feeling the pressure right now smile

Hoping to get the rear fender "finished" (to a BABE and Lemons standard) and the front one done this week.

Got all the exhaust bits over the weekend so I have to piece that together (screaming good ebay deal on a Banks SS muffler....so what if its a 3" inlet...that's what adapters are for right?)  So if I burn out on bodywork that's my next item.

Got most of the cooling system parts ready for install, just dont feel like crawling under the car right now.  Then its fuel and electric which belong to TheWake and Sonic respectively so I'm trusting they'll get it sorted.

Re: Still plugging away

We stretched the wheelbase at both ends so on to the front. Not alot of step by step here, same as the back, cut out the arch, mark it, cut away forward of the fender, weld it back in place. Just need to fill in the backside now.

Re: Still plugging away

Started modifying the other front fender tonite. To do so I had to put together most of the front end for measurements and just couldn't resist tossing the hood on to see how it looked. Looks a little more stubby or blunt in the front with the wheels forward but kinda interesting.

http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/frontmockup.jpg

Got the passenger front fender 75% done as well.  I'm finally ahead of schedule again and should have the major body work and cooling system done by the end of the weekend.

Re: Still plugging away

I think the "stubby" look is awesome.  It looks more like a car that 14 year old me would have drawn badly in the margins of my trapperkeeper.  Less overhang = cooler and more hotroddy.
