I think the "stubby" look is awesome.  It looks more like a car that 14 year old me would have drawn badly in the margins of my trapperkeeper.  Less overhang = cooler and more hotroddy.

Yeah, Im digging the look, reminds me of old SAABs for some reason.

Re: Still plugging away

How to you go from a 3" exhaust pipe to a 2 1/4 inch exhaust pipe....not simply it seems.  After playing with all the adapters at the local parts stores and coming up dry I just bought a 3" connector tube and decided to see what we could make.

So we focused the mathematical powers of Jim squared and figured the circumference of the 3" was approximately 12.5 inches and the circumference of the 2 1/4 was about 7 inches so we divided the difference by 4 then ignored all that and marked out some approximate pie cuts in the adapter.

Then we cut them out and bent everything inward.

http://d12473838.serv160.ixwebhosting.com/images/adapter2.jpg

An end cut of the 2 1/4 and a little welding and it was all done.

Now why did we do this?  Because we got a stainless steel Banks muffler for $20 and it had a 3" inlet.

Re: Still plugging away

When I closed of the center tunnel you may have noticed I had left the back part open. Our cooling and fuel lines still had to be run and they passed through this section so I wanted to wait until they were finished to close it in. Also since our brake junctions and shift coupler are under here I wanted this panel to be removable not fixed like the front tunnel. For now its held in with some sheet metal screws but when the time for "prettying up" comes I will switch to dzus fasteners or at least rivnuts in the floor with button head screws. The final difference is this piece was made from a heavier gauge steel than the front tunnel. Since we eliminated the trunk the back seat area is the only place we have for luggage, tools, etc on the BABE rally so it needed to be able to support some weight.

It's going to be down the wire.  The whole team is here all weekend.  We have to re run the fuel lines, wire up the whole car, finish brake install and bleed all the hydraulics.  Then its just a whole lot of reassembly, fitting of body panels and Im still trying to sort out a front sway bar.

Remember that part of my essay that said I couldn't promise the comedic value of marital discourse?  This weekend is my wedding anniversary.  sad    But it's the last chance we have.  It goes to Rob next weekend for the cage and the following weekend we leave for BABE.

So its do or die this weekend.  If it's not running and driving by Sunday night we're done.  But the lists are getting short and we're still plugging away at it.

Just came in from the shop.

Well....its alot closer.  It runs, kinda.  Engine is crap, hoping to find another but fixing this one.  It pretended to be a miata and chowed the woodruff key in the crank pulley.  So its not just miatas, its anyone who half asses a timing belt job.

I welded up the damaged pulleys and I need to see if I can find a woodruff key to fit back in or a piece of bar stock or something.

Brakes work, clutch works cooling system seems functional.  Exhaust is loud as hell,  not sure what to do about that, limited space means limited options.

Still to do, turn the bundle of wires in the cockpit into a harness.  Mount doors, tweak bodywork to fit over tires.  Adjust shifter. Mount seats. Install cage.  Electrical accessories and lights (kinda need them for BABE)  Probably a 100 other things.  Still not sure it will be done but we'll just keep pressing on.

This is a fantastic build and proves that with enough time and insanity you can build something truly epic from what would otherwise be considered a lost cause. Kudos to you guys, and I'm looking forward to seeing it at Capitol Offense.

Capitol Offense will be its one and only Lemons showing Im afraid.  After that it gets torn down and made pretty for GRM.

We have a sad little MGB with no drivetrain sitting in the driveway waiting its turn at being the next monster out of Dr Frankensteins lab and it is being built with the intent of a long term Lemons career.  In other words, cheap. wink

You can actually build a Lemons car and not drink beer?  BLASPHEMY!!!!!

Pendejo - There is no such thing as a racing budget and if you can't afford to set it on fire and watch it burn while drinking a beer then don't race it.

I've heard rumor of such things but just cant fathom it myself.

I mean how do you convince yourself all your bad designs are a good idea when your sober?

Hey, those phone dials don't look half bad. Maybe could be used as a "show" set.

I really like them actually. They are the "show" set for GRM but mostly because they only cost $100 with a usable set of Hoosiers for the autocross

Hey, give credit to young team captains such as myself (who won't be able to drink legally for another 7 years). I come up with plenty of crazy ideas, but I'm not always able to implement them...

I'm coming up short here - 21 to drink, -7 years = 14 years old.  16 years old to drive...  Unless you were in some legal trouble...

team captain doesn't have to be a driver? that's the only way i can see this working...

Re: Still plugging away

It adds up if you realize he's too young to legally drink. That 7 key isn't far from the 5 if you're not sober. Just a guess though.

Re: Still plugging away

Well, all I know is that the Wartburg is coming here on Saturday for it's cage.  Sunday is going to be a time to work on the MR2 for Summit.  So I fiigure between those two events, I need at least a 1/4 keg.
