Rent a Race Car

www.rentacrapcan.com

What is up with this? How can you rent a car for $5500 and enter it in a $500 car race?

Re: Rent a Race Car

The team doing the racing would still need to run the BS inspection gauntlet, which means they'd need to bring all the documentation provided by the car's owners. If we give them laps and/or crush the car, tough shit.

Re: Rent a Race Car

You pay $5500 PLUS entry fees & room-board.....  so it ends up costing the "team" a pretty penny....since they average cost of a lemons race weekend for the team is around $3-4k.....

Re: Rent a Race Car

There is a part of society that would love to race like this but just do not have the brains or resources to build their own crap can...but they have the walletts!  I don't see a problem with it.  (As long as the team doesn't drive like ass-hats and get the car crushed)

Re: Rent a Race Car

This doesn't look like true 'renting' to me.  To me it looks like a brokerage agency.  You have a car, but you are not racing it, they have customers (teams)  looking for cars.  They connect you and this team.

You build the car, you transport the car, you put fresh tires on it.  You accept responsibility to furnish the vehicle to pass tech.  You put 5k in your pocket.

The Team races the car - but who supplies all the equipment for, and support during the race, you ? (if so get out some of that 5k).  Team pays for any damage etc etc - until they say "ahh oops we can't afford repairs"  You take the balance of the 5k out of your pocket to repair/build another car, or pay an attorney.

Brokerage agency puts $500 in their pocket.

hmm

All of the above is my opinion and does not necessarily reflect any direct or inferred knowledge of brokerage and/or rental law that may or may not have resulted from a stay at a Holiday Inn.

Re: Rent a Race Car

<sigh>. Around every new thing comes the hordes of hangers-on trying to leech a piece of the pie. Defeats the whole purpose of Lemons if you ask me, and worse, since these people would then have no "sweat" in it, just more a-holes on the track willing to bash you for a quick thrill. No thanks!

Re: Rent a Race Car

I got some clarification I thought I'd pass along.  If you rent a car out and it lasts less than 1/3rd of the race, the owner gets 1/2, or $2500.  Also, the owner is expected to help keep the car running.  Not a guarantee, but a guarantee that he will be there and do his best to make repairs.  That means bringing tools and supplies too.

It that commitment to keep the car running that might damn it.  If I'm towing a car 600 miles to a race track, I'd kinda want to be racing.

Thread from the dead!

Has anyone actually ever used this company or one like it?  It seems intriguing and sleazy all at the same time.

Re: Rent a Race Car

Very sleazy and I can't imagine any car owner/racer handing over all of his hard work to 5 jokers with more money than sense to trash the car.  Here's an idea of the discussion between the car owner and driver who just got out of the car after his first stint.
CO: "Um, the telltale says you ran the motor up to 7200 rpm.  You can't do that"
D: "Whatever dude, you need to fix the brakes before my bro does his first stint.  They aren't working very well."
CO: "When you boil the fluid out of the master cylinder, brakes don't tend to work to well.  Do you have any wheel to wheel experience?"
D: "I've done plenty of track days in my Viper.  I know how to race."
CO:  "Sure you do. *rolls eyes. Help me get the front of the car jacked up so we can check the brakes"
D: "That's your job man.  You fix car, I drive car.  If you need me I'll be in the Prevost."

I would consider renting my car to a team of drivers provided I was a driver on said team and they all understood the limitations of the car.  This way I wouldn't have to pay some sleazeball in Vegas his $500 cut.

This is exactly how I see this ending.  Just not worth it, especially if they destroy the car before 1/3rd of the way through and you get 0.  I've spent far too many years Autoxing and other stuff watching guys with more money than brains or talent who would jump on something like this and proceed to blow the clutch to pieces or anything and everything else you mentioned above within 10 minutes and then bitch about it and screw me out of every penny.

I was nervous enough about taking on a new team member I didn't know for this race... Who would have thought I'd care so much about my crapcan VW Fox former winter beater!

You only get $4000 if the car goes 1/3 of the race.  The team that you are renting to could crash it, blow the engine, nuke the clutch, overheat the brakes, or a host of other things that would, through no fault of your own, cause you not to get your money.

I am wondering the same...

did you guys see this one????

http://www.racecarlife.com

Both of these sites almost anger me.  It completely eliminates one of the most fun parts of this, and cheapens the worth our teams put into building and theming our cars... IMO....

Do the Lemons and Chumpcar guys actually support this????

Its one thing to bring in a driver to join your team who doesn't have the space/time/means to build a lemons car.  Not everyone is mechanically inclined or has the space to park such a wreck.  But this is basically "Rent a Lemons Team" and they sell it at some points as you could use it for a "team building corporate event".  That to me cheapens the whole thing, someone else said here driving at the race is only about 40% of Lemons, and if any schmoes can set up a "corporate event" for his buddies and get out on track without having ANY investment of blood sweat and tears, wow well that just sucks.

Re: Rent a Race Car

I've sold all sorts of seats in my cars as like stepping stones for other racers they go and start there own teams. I think I enjoy the build better than the race ,nay racing is a blast.
I actually store a couple lemons cars for a couple teams who don't have space and transport car also.
