This car will undoubtadly never win and simply there for show and go... It's already over-engineered. Why not add a bit more of an aircraft heart to it?

Re: Turbines

I might have briefly looked into this...

You need to check government surplus auctions for aircraft APU's, generators and (yes they exist) gas turbine powered welders.  Those all come with the oh so important PTO shaft (usually 6K RPM) that you can hook up to the input of a CVT car transmission.   The aircraft APU's are usually sold off with their power cables and that can make a major dent in the purchase price when you recycle 200lb of copper wire.  Not like anyone is even going to check the budget when you start up a turbine though.

I have enough stupid projects so we decided to pass.  Yep, we thought of something even more stupid than a gas turbine powered Japanese micro car tongue

A Gas turbine powered French Micro Car.

We have toyed with the idea and did a bunch of research, I just don't think we have the dedication to actually pull it off. Besides, The fur might just catch on fire.

The LeCar?  It's cool, but it's a minicar, not a microcar.  I love and own microcars and minicars; they're just not the same thing.  The definitions are something of a can of worms in the microcar/minicar community these days, but why let that stop me:

The Renault 5 in general is a minicar, Class C to E, depending on which engine is fitted.  LeCars would be Class E (1275-1600cc).  Microcars are much, much smaller.  The classes are listed in the middle of the following link under the "People's Choice: Participants" heading, with microcars as Classes A and B (sort of, since even that page later defines the cutoff as 500cc instead of 600cc):

The standards are somewhat arbitrary and blatantly inconsistent, but hey, that's all the more reason to cling to them in a mindless, rabid, partisan fury.

(Oh, the Z600?  Yeah, it's a microcar.  Class B.  Unless it isn't.  Simple, see!)

Note:  This sort of silliness is an excellent argument against starting down the "rulebook like a telephone directory" path with LeMons.  World Meet 2010 itself was a blast, though, in large part because nobody (especially the organizers) worried too much about these distinctions when it came down to enjoying the cars on the field.

Re: Turbines

Make sure that if you go the turbine route you buy one with a free turbine power stage, it will dramatically reduce issues with spool up as you can leave the gas generator portion running at 75% for idle and brake the output shaft  Horrible fuel economy but huge torque at low speeds...  You might even get away without a transmission, just go from turbine to a large brake for the free turbine to the rear axle.   No reverse but that just adds excitement

i'd love to see a LeMons turbine push-start.

Re: Turbines

You weren't at Gingerman last April, but we had something similar with the Thunderbird, after the transmission was welded to a single-speed, direct-drive 1:1 unit...

Re: Turbines

A turbine Justy would be a great idea. The Justy comes with a CVT.
