           Engine Weight/Size FYI    version 06.02.18
            by Dave Williams, dw32@angelfire.com

It isn't really a Frequently Asked Question, so I'll call it an
"FYI", For Your Information.  This was originally a list I'd compiled
long ago on paper, then moved to the computer, then posted on the net
as a response to some questions.  It wound up being popular, but since
I didn't keep track of the origin of the data there was some debate as
to how accurate the list was.  This new improved list has origins
where I could find references; what doesn't have an origin is stuff
from my original list.

You'll sometimes see more than one weight listed.  Some weights are
for just a long block, some are complete and ready to run, and of
course everything in between.  Some engines varied in weight during
their production runs - for example, some later Chevy V8s use thinwall
blocks and aluminum heads.

As of version 94.06.01 engine dimensions have been added.  Since the
shape can vary quite a bit within the maximum limits this data isn't
very useful, but many people have requested it.

As of version 00.02.04 transmission weights have been added.

If you don't see something listed, it's because I don't have that
information.  What I have is here.  I don't have a secret hoard of data
sitting to gloat over.

If you have any figures you'd like to contribute, please send them to

Re: Engine weights. For real - someone else did it. All you need.

after reading the footnote, it looks like they have the gen 1 of our engine which is heavier than the one I have in my car so I guess mine is less than 350 lbs.  Which I guess makes it the light engine for my car since the small engine was the iron duke which weighed 350 lbs too or the 3.3 which was an underbored 3.8 which I assume would weigh slightly more than the 3.8.

I was just at the Nethercut Collection in Sylmar, CA on Saturday and they have some weird old touring car with an opposed piston engine as well.

The 1st engine that was in the 928 Estate was 595lbs on Evil Genius Racings scales....I am proud to say among the heaviest engines ever in Lemons...only the Jag V12 and possibly an iron block big block weigh more!!!!

276lbs.... I'm good with that.

Probably less since I ripped 20lbs worth of balance shafts out of it.

Re: Engine weights. For real - someone else did it. All you need.

Our 392 Hemi was not on the list but it really weighs 767 lbs.    The Mercedes M100 6.9 comes in at a feather light 387 kilo's that's right at 860 lbs.

I think we own this.

Both cars ran well and finished -  but both cars spent a lot of time getting the brakes replaced and were just a bit faster than the pace cars...

Re: Engine weights. For real - someone else did it. All you need.

From the International manual I had a 345/392cid oil pan thru air cleaner 1100lbs, with exhaust manifolds... the american land rover motor!! no HP but lots of torque!!!

1985 BMW 535i... one of the slowest builds ever!!!

Re: Engine weights. For real - someone else did it. All you need.

I referenced this list a while back when we first planned our engine swap. We're replacing a 170hp 605lb engine with a 375hp 625lb engine. That might give us a little performance improvement.
