Topic: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

Howdy folks!  Another TH hopeful checking in.

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/ixnayxj/Lemons/PettyCashHomepage.jpg

Here's our rig, an '87 Jeep Cherokee 4.0, 5-speed, 2WD with a quarter million miles on it...$250.  The Cherokee was designed with lots of Renault influence, so hopefully that gives us a few sympathy points.  If that weren't bad enough, AMC/Jeep even used a Peugot transmission (aka, our mechanical fuse) in this particular year; we're bringing several spares.   No offense to the Francophiles intended.

Big sway bars, big-ish brakes and chopped springs should make it somewhat less treacherous and diabolical than it could be, and with our diet plan, it should weigh in just over 3000 lbs.     Wish us luck!

Re: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

Makes sense for someone from Issaquah to bring a Jeep to a road race (I grew up in Maple Valley).  Have fun in the turns.

Hmmm... I smell cheat already!

Small world, and thanks for the well wishes.  Most of the guys on the team use Cherokees for their intended purpose (besides getting groceries); our knowelege of the more arcane details of these things helped us choose to race one (against our better judgement).  We're just hoping to turn a bunch of laps, and stay out of the way of all those guys in E30s and Miatas.

Boy, admitting to intimate expertise on the Lemons forum about the car you just bought... how dumb are you guys?

And just so nobody thinks we're just into four-wheel drives, here's my Monster Miata...after a rough night:

340 RWHP and wet RR tracks don't mix well:

Drivetrain was unhurt and was swapped into another donor '90 Miata...which cost a helluve lot more than $500, BTW.

On the one hand, they are admitting intimate expertise in their chosen vehicle on the Lemons forum.  On the other hand, their chosen vehicle is a Jeep Cherokee.  How much can they possibly cheat?  Don't they have a live front axle?

Not too many 2WD Jeeps with live front axles... wink

Whups.  I thought live meant "not independent", not "containing a driveshaft".  They have a solid front axle.

Re: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

It has a beam axle instead of a Dana 30 axle.  It acts essientally the same, so yes we're screwed either way.  All 2WD buys us is not having a transfer case or front driveshaft and an easier-to-change transmission (we're planning on several).

SOME 4x4 vehicles come with IFS in 2WD, and solid axle in 4x4.  1980's GM trucks come to mind.  Hmmm...maybe we should switch to a 2WD 454 Suburban.

I am intrigued by your theme... as it may be surprisingly similar to ours...

Also, everyone knows that the 4.0L is instant cheating engine simply because the judges cant kill it.

Yeah, I heard that.  Kind of a bummer, but we're embracing the Richard Petty more than the car theme itself.  Even though some bastard beat me to the #43....

Re: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

When it rains it pours.  I just bought another one with a mysterious electrical issue making it not start  for $200.  Can I run two cars if they cost less than $500 combined?  big_smile

Just kidding...but not really.  I'm going to ditch the 2-dr and move to the newer '89 4-dr 2WD (a rarity in the PNW), which is unfortunately an automatic.  The prospect of dealing with the Renault transmission ultimately drove me to the auto in the 4-dr, which with some electronic trickery can be fooled into imitating a FMVB auto (i.e. hold a gear as in modern manu-matics).

Re: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

I'm glad to see someone trying this, I always thought that a Cherokee would be an interesting Lemons choice. Are you going to be at Thunderhill?

If it has the towing package '89 should have a tow mode switch for the trans which holds shifts to redline under full throttle. My '89 4x4 Cherokee had that and it was pretty fast 0-50. If yours doesn't have the switch it should be pretty easy to retrofit it.

BTW is is a Peugeot transmission or a Renault one that came in the manual Cherokee? If it's Peugeot trans we might have a cheap source for spares for our 505 if you have any extras lying around. FYI we're from the Seattle area as well.

Yup, we're in for TH!

I doubt it's a tow-pack equipped rig as it's a 2WD...but who knows.  Is the button you're reffering to the "performance/economy" switch?  I'm more concerned about it doing a 2-1 downshift under WOT mid corner than reving out to redline...it IS a 4-liter after all.

The crappy tranny I'm talking about is the BA-10, a Peugeot unit.  I slipped and wrote Renault because they collaborated with AMC on the original design and I've probably had a few beers too many.  Amazingly, my '98 trail rig STILL has French parts on it...like the rear window wiper motor...that doesn't work.

Anyway, the AW4 auto is a very stout unit and will serve well in its intended purpose, which is staying alive.  I hate the idea of a race car with an auto, but it makes the most sense.  Oh well.  I'll buy the first round of beers at Jimmy Mac's Roadhouse in Federal Way if you're up for it sometime...us NW'ers have to stick together against these Cali cheaters.

P.S.  I used to have a 505 diesel:  Worst car I've ever had the displeasure of having my name on the title of...which says a lot as I've owned an SVX and a DSM.  wink

It wouldn't start, it's been smacked in the nose pretty hard, the interior was soaked and the tranny was bone dry, but for $200 who can complain too loudly!  The next time you see her she'll be all pretty in Petty Blue.

Re: "Howdy" from Team Petty Cash-

It doesn't turn off; this is the exact opposite of the issue I expected with our $200 Chair-Oh-Key.  There must be something screwey in the wiring harness, because after pulling the steering column, the thing still won't turn off.  We have to pull the coil to get it to stop...so we ordered up our master kill switch.  Two birds with one stone.

Also got to work on making the thing "handle":

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/ixnayxj/Lemons/209.jpg

http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j160/ixnayxj/Lemons/213.jpg

For the rear, I think I'm going to burn on spring perches on the bottom of the axle (sprung under) and build my own leaf pack from a totaled S-10 a buddy has in his yard.  Hopefullt that will lower it a bit and stiffen it up.  It's actually got some 'newer' shocks on it, but I think they'll be too long...still undecided on that front.

More interior crap, and tore out the A/C:

What could possibly go wrong?
