Topic: Rustoleum paint job

Anyone have any advice on how to spray rustoleum using a HVLP gun?
Mix ratio??
Drying time??
Sanding??
Multiple light coats or one heavy coat??
Air pressure??
Im planning on a two tone paint sceme, how long should i wait between changing colors?

   Thanks for any help!

Re: Rustoleum paint job

Shake until the rattle ball moves freely, hold about 6 inches away, pull shirt over your nose and push the button on the top of the can. It takes about 1/2 hour to dry so it wont leave finger prints. You will need at least 2 coats unless you don't care about runs. I never sand. Fans on low help with drying times. I've never tried spraying out of a gun,I think that would be too much like work. With the cans, 4 people and 45 minutes, a car can be painted with 2 coats. Takes approximately  5-6 cans.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

Dry times will vary with humity, altitudes, and etc. I used Japan du to help out at that.

I sprayed it thinned half and half, and it was too thin. You don't need to thin it much to get it to lay flat.. I will find some pics of the one I sprayed.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

I sprayed red on our car at 4/1 and it was a bit thick, 3/1 on yellow and it was too thin...  I'd guess it varies by color.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

All Rustoleum spray cans on our first paint job, I think it looked pretty alright.  We gave it about 8 hours between coats, full day between layers (or anything we had to tape to).

Re: Rustoleum paint job

Roller, not thinned, it's thick enough to be structural.  It probably still isn't dry, and you can pretty much forget about sanding unless you want to knock the runs off with 100 grit, looks fine from 10'.   It would dry a little faster but take more coats if it were thinned 1/4 or so.

If I cared more about looks, I'd do real prep work, spray real automotive grade paint and really be a wasting time and money.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

I painted our merkur with a gallon can of rustoleum white from home depot.

We started by priming the rusty spots with sandable primer, and then giving the whole car a quick once over with a palm sander and 200 grit sand paper.
I thinned it by eye.  I started with about 20% thinned with laquer thinner, and it came out like cottage cheese through my Harbor Freight Spray gun at 25psi.  I ended up somewhere in the 30-40% thinned range, and I pushed the pressure up to 45psi.  It sprayed pretty well, and ended up with a very lightly textured coat.  I sprayed one thick coat on a 60°F semi-humid day, and let it dry in a barn durning a rainstorm for a few days.

I was happy with the results, just a few runs but good coverage.

Haven't used Rustoleum myself, but a couple of guys on other boards have, they say to thin it about 25-30% and use foam rollers, it's supposed to come out slick if it's done that way.

I roll on tractor paint.  Only use 1/2 the thinner it calls for, or less, and don't forget the hardner to make it shine.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

We rolled it on with foam rollers, came out good considering no prep work.  We thinned the first coat of gray (probably too much), but the other two (or three, can't remember) were straight out of the can.  Red was straight out of the can and took 2 coats.  Finished it off a single coat of black for the stripe a day later.  We were happy with the result.

We used Rustoleum with brushes to create the Janis Joplin Honda Civic. It took about 40 man hours all told plus drying time between layers.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

I can't see why anyone would bother with the extra effort to spray rustoleum, it rolls on so well.

These are 2 that I did for BABE rally.  Foam roller and thinned rustoleum.  No sanding, heck I didnt even wash the mustang first, just roll and go.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

Save yourself a lot of effort and mess, roll it on with cheap foam trim rollers.  Goes on much faster, no need to thin or mix, no need to purchase or setup a sprayer, 3x-4x faster than rattle cans, no messy over spray, much less prep of the garage/shop, not as temperature sensitive (needs to be above freezing), not humidity sensitive, no orange peeling, dries fast enough.

Our car took 3 coats to cover the original teal.  We did one coat a day.  Rolled on faster than I could have sprayed it.

You can see the excellent lemony results below.  BTW, the flat rolled on the roof looks much better than the flat we previously sprayed on.  The flat took one and a half coats.

Re: Rustoleum paint job

I used the same Rustoleum colors as camaroz1985, and applied with foam rollers straight out of the can.  Sanded down the hood and roof a little to flatten out the wonderful 90's era flaking paint.  Took 3 coats.  Much easier than spraying, and besides -- it's a crappy race car.......

Re: Rustoleum paint job

If you do spray rattle ran rustoleum make sure to pick up a couple of snap on pistol grips. With the proper handle you can paint out of the can as well as you are likely to get it to spray out of a gun
