Topic: K West Young Man

Looks like Chris O. and I are planning on getting the K to the West Coast. We are planning on running it at The Ridge. Chris and I will be responsible for getting it to and from the Ridge. We are trying to figure out how to get it from BFE GP to California. If someone wants to take it for Buttonwillow and Thunderhill maybe we can figure out a way to pitch in together to get it to California. Anyone else from the West Coast want in on this? Help the K complete Iacocca's Manifest Destiny.

Re: K West Young Man

BFE GP is 1300 miles away from Chris O's house. I'm not sure how to make this work. Is anyone from California going to BFE GP? Maybe we could figure out a way to have someone go out with a double trailer, race at BFE GP and bring the K back, with some funds to defray the travel costs.

Or, maybe someone wants to head out this way to race at Buttonwillow and could haul the car this way and the West Coast people could pitch in to defray the costs to haul the K out. Maybe with a rental trailer one way? I know we could spare a spot in our car for seat time at Buttonwillow.

Anyone want to take a road trip to Cali DRIVING the K-Car out?

Got to get creative with this part of the trip. Any ideas? Throw them out here.

We can make this happen. Just need to think.......

Re: K West Young Man

I have a ton of Southwest miles. If someone wants to fly to Denver and drive the k  back to California, I'm sure I can help with that.

Just be sure that you have an engine available after the race.

Stop me if you've heard this one.  Someone takes delivery of an old Mopar from Colorado to Califorina.  That's right, YOU could play Kowalski in the second shittiest version of Vanishing Point!

Re: K West Young Man

I'm towing to and from BFE hauling a double trailer. I could be prepared to haul the K car back IF I were to be able to rent a box truck for the trip and put the K inside of it for the return leg. The trailer I'm using will barely hold the America and Mini so wouldn't hold the K wagon plus something else, hence the need to put the K inside the box.

I just can't chip in $ to pay for the box truck. Penske will likely offer a killer deal (with unlimited mileage) to get a box truck from Denver to So Cal (that comes with unlimited miles), but that leaves the outbound leg troublesome for me and my drivers.

If someone in So Cal has a company that owns a box truck or a flat bed or whatever that they are comfortable with me driving (I only have a regular Class C license), I'm willing. It just has to be able to tow a 24' total-length trailer that uses a 2" ball hitch.

I could...... maybe ....... possibly ...... drive the K back to TX, then to Buttonwillow.....

Are you based in Texas now and not in California?
Is that why it has to go back to Texas?
Otherwise, it could come straight out here.
Driving it would be a pretty great way to get it out here. You know, if it holds together after BFE.

Other ideas:
-Team that is somewhere between California and Colorado bringing it back to their home base and someone from here traveling out to get it.
-Team from California goes to Colorado for BFE with ability to bring another car back (towing or...driving?) The west coast receivers of the car (me and Chris and whoever) would pitch in some $ (and seat time if interested) to help get the car here.
-Someone from California flies to BFE to race (maybe using some of those Southwest miles) and drives the car back.
-Alex gets further involved and does something else crazy in the name of the K. An idea I personally like.

Still hoping someone steps forward to take it for Buttonwillow and Thunderhill. Seems a pity to not get it in all the West Coast races since it is here. I'm committed to doing the Ridge with Chris but I would pitch in however I can with someone else on the other California races if it will help get the K to them.

We can use all of our California socialistic, communistic teachings to pitch in together and get this thing to the West Coast and into the races.

Any other ideas?

Re: K West Young Man

Talk to MTV. According to some email they sent out, there's a show looking for free rides in people's cars. Perhaps the production company would just want to take the K for Buttonwillow instead. Or post on Craigslist in LA. You never know what Independent Film Maker is scanning the pages for their next big storyline.

Re: K West Young Man

Getting the MTV show in the K would be pretty great.
I mean, until they try to drive it like a race car and kill it.
The K deserves it's time in the spotlight.

Re: K West Young Man

From my experience with the many TV people (the official Lemons term is "Rich and Powerful TV Men" or just R&PTVM for short) who hang around Lemons, you don't want to trust them with the K. Or anything.

Re: K West Young Man

I'll drive the car to Buttonwillow and run it, IF:

- Nobody else has the guts to
- I can get at least one local-ish teammate with anything resembling a reasonable set of tools, and
- The car is streetable after all the engine swapping that will happen to it. And still runs by the end of the race, of course.

Alternatively, I'll join any team that dares to run it for Thunderhill, and I'll DRIVE the K-car to Houston afterwards. Heck, for Thunderhill I can actually put together like a half a team just from my own people.

So, I'll do either one, but I vastly prefer Thunderhill because it doesn't eat into my build schedule and I have a place to crash at and keep the car at, in SF.

Finally, I will gladly substitute one of our lackluster NJ entries and drive the K-car across the land, the weekend after Northworst, all the way to DC and then race it at NJMP in August. You know, to give our running, working, boring cars a break. My sister lives in Seattle so I have a place there, and that's a nice excuse to pay a visit anyway. I'm sure I can get some 'Chuckers and/or Outlaws to help me fill the team some more and carry the banner for NJ (because, face it, K-car under a soivet flag and a Sputnik entry gets a bit boring after a while).

I can then drive the stupid thing across the land AGAIN, to CA, fly back to DC, then fly to CA, race, then drive it to TX right after the race, and then fly home. I would essentially cross the country three times and visit at least half the states, right there.

BTW, whoever physically has the car now - please scan/photo the registration card (it's in the glove compartment) and email it to firegremlin at gmail dot com. My insurance company wants a copy of all my registration cards, for some reason o_O

the registration card was moved to the pocket under the radio/HVAC controls.  the glovebox kept falling open while i was driving it, and i didn't want to lose it.

Re: K West Young Man

Team ing with Bad Ideas has an Idea... might involve Spank, or not or LeMonster, or Chris, or all three?

We (cough) will gladly coordinate, but can't quite carry the transpo' funds (and an engine, and entry) but we have a garage at B-willow.

So... Can we (NSF? should be your, er, responsibility/Bane) set up a "this is too supid to be real" Kickstarter account in exchange for... Pictures? your face on the side of the car? Moc-immortality? We won't tell you helped?
~some ideas:
- Amanda will boon lunch at any race we set up at for whatever contribution seems fair.
- Sophie/Anton/whoever will make some sort of vidie chronicle for the Buttonwillow leg and if you pay in you get a copy?
Other reason-to-send-money-to-Kickstarter Ideas?

Thoughts:
Spank's box-truck idea. How much $$ are we looking at? It's a fair plan, possibly cheaper than someone driving it.
And - even easier if Chris-O intercepts somewhere convenient to Spank's route from Colorado to SoCal so that it can land at Sacramento (Co-opting Chris heavily)
and that FireGremlin is not allergic to cats so can use my "shop" to help get an engine into it - its track record indicates this will always be necessary  (or he can drive it to Sac if it gets/still has an engine that runs) etc etc Blah blah

Interesting team idea:
Amanda of kick-ass-judge's-lunch-bribing-food-queen will drive (She said so)
Sophie of Anton's fame will drive. (she said this would be the ONLY Lemon's car she would ever drive)
Anton offers K-car support and/or drives (he's on two teams already, What could possibly go wrong - and what Sophie said guarantees interest)
Super Alan (Humber-Hero) has offered his fab shop into the B-willow garage space we've already co-opted. (May drive if we get him a sponsor - but he's 100% cash-out)
Amanda's friend that rolled the Snipe (may) drive, if we can fund her, too
...leaves one spot for a "You'll never get me on track unless it's stupid and slow and wouldn't be competitive even if Sebastian Vettel drove"

After Buttonwillow we can store it (The neighbors love us/Scrubby) or it can get to Chris-O for the next appointment at The Ridge

And?
