Topic: What a free Alfa GTV6 looks like

So I picked up the free Alfa last night, in the dark.  It involved lots of laying in the snow, winching, more laying in the snow, drinking coffee, floor jacks, bricks, more winching, and more laying in the snow.  Since I couldn't actually see what the car looked like while I was loading it, I wasn't sure if this was a worthwhile endeavor.  I figured the best time to take a look at the car would be in the sympathetic orange glow of a frigid Michigan morning.  And . . . it's not that bad!

Some rust, but nothing like what I had prepared myself for.  It's been off the road for 14 years, but was in an apparently dry garage most of that time.  Previous owner said he took it off the road because of a bad air flow meter?!?!?  We shall see.

Anyway, here are some pics taken this morning:

Welcome to European car hell: Range Rover, Alfa GTV6, Mercedes 280se 4.5, Simca Aronde, and Spridget.

Looking . . . OK, actually.

On cursory inspection, this (driver side wheelwell) appears to be the worst of it.  Passenger side wheelwell has comparable rust.

More Alfa pics for those who are interested.  The Simca and Benz appear in a few as well.

Enjoy every sandwich.

VERY cool!  I can't wait to hear what it takes to get it going.  Hopefully time hasn't been too hard on it.  My Z was a disaster from sitting for 15-20 years.

Re: What a free Alfa GTV6 looks like

I have picked up my fair share of free or dirty cheap cars a weird hours due to Lemons.

Don't really know what you got till you see it the next day in the light.

The Alpha looks good.

I still think the 280SE should get LeMon-ization priority.

Don't worry--die Rote Sau is still Job One, especially since it has no title and there's not much else I could end up doing with it.  Although I may end up throwing a plate on it and driving it for a few days, since the Range Rover just sprung a leak in a trans cooler line.

The Alfa, having a title, may do DD duty for a while if/when I get it running.  I'm going to pull and test the AFM next week.  The Simca is still being considered for Lemons duty, but is a father/daughter project for the time being, as we attempt to scrounge up parts and rebuild the stock "Flash" engine.  If all goes well, it might be a driver come summer and get LeMonized further on down the road.

Enjoy every sandwich.

Pop the cover off the AFM and spray non-silicone contact cleaner on it as you move the "fingers". Then get an analog or good digital VOM and probe the pins and see if you have dead spots. Check the IAT sensor inside, everything should be really simple and correlate to the manual spec more or less. DO NOT UNDO THE ADJUSTMENT SCREW ON THE SPRING HOLDER. If you know what you are doing with it, sure, but the settings aren't usually marked and one tooth change can ruin the car.

Re: What a free Alfa GTV6 looks like

Went out in the snow today to play with my crapcan collection.  Die Rote Sau fired right up, but after warming up, developed a coolant leak from the upper rad hose or neck. Scheisse!

Playing with the Alfa was more productive, though. Threw a battery in it and it cranked over easily enough, so that's encouraging.  I couldn't hear the fuel pump running when I turned the ignition on, though, so I'll have to look into that.  Probably just as well, since I'm sure there's some pretty old gas in the tank.  I'm going to go back out shortly and see if it will run on starting fluid and go from there.

Enjoy every sandwich.
