Topic: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

Seems like if you have proper cooling the small block Chevy V8 should last quite well.

What's the problem?

I want to put one in a Lemons 914...

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

Like I said ours ran fine!  Biggest flaw in the Camaro was the drivers!  We plan to race it again this year with the same engine.  Seriously...what could possiably go wrong?

I think getting proper cooling for it is the problem.

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

it appears the traditional SBC's tend to overheat or (even better) starve for oil and ventilate the block like the Porsches like too (944-928)

A SBC powered 914 would be a MONSTER...talk about smoking the field....300hp+ in a 2000lb mid engined car.....thats gonna rock...IF you can get past BS

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

I'm a fan of American V8s in general, but I'm not sure the SBC the best choice for a Lemons car.  Besides the reliability issues the SBC has had at Lemons, you have to ask yourself what kind of SBC you can get within a legitimate Lemons budget.  Odds are it's not going to be a 327 with Fuelie heads, or an LT1, or a 302 out of a '69 Z28-- no, a non-cheating Lemons SBC is going to be a 305, 307 or 350 out of a clapped-out passenger car or dead pickup truck.
A well-built SBC is a thing of beauty, and a wonderful engine for a street car or a race car.  But a Lemons SBC... well, let's just say the noises I heard from the #59 Camaro and the CheVolvo will haunt me forever.

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

I have great faith that a small block Chevy could survive if prepped correctly. A really BIG-ASSED radiator, gutted thermostat, new timing chain. oil pump and pick-up should do it. The oil pan is easily modified. I'd use a cheap used circle track pan with trap doors. Parts for this engine are the cheapest in the world because they made a zillion of them.

Here's the motor that has been offered to me since Sept 2007...

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

Yeah, but the Edelbrock carburetor and intake are worth most of your $500 budget.

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

No dirty looks from this party. If my buddy Vince's Lemons Camaro is any indication, cooling and transmission problems mean you will not be bothering me on the track much, heh.

Re: Why the dirty looks against the SBC?

From personal experience...  The oil tends to froth in the pan, you loose some oil pressure, and then the engine tend to run a lot hotter.  Then the oil starts to break down and the downward spiral of engine implosion starts.
