I have the Ford 1994 Shop Manual and wire diagram if you are interested it covers the complete tear down of the Transmission.

If you could send some scans of that teardown I would really appreciate it.  We bought a Haynes Manual, and unfortunately it didn't have a detailed breakdown.  I guess some have them and some do not.  We also have this guide (http://mazda626.net/topic/40913-g-serie … -lsd-swap/) from above.  It looks pretty complete.

I found this car

that looks like a very good candidate for a bolt on swap.  It not then we should at least be able to swap the internals.  All that hinges on it being a manual though.  There are tons of other Mazda Protege's with other engine sizes like 1.5, 1.6, ect I'm not sure if they will be a good swap or not.  Does the transmission mounting points change on the B series engines?

Re: Ford Transmission Help

That teardown guide on mazda626.net guided me through several transmission teardowns. It's thorough. Reassembly is tricky, though. You need at least 3 hands to hold everything in place as you slip the cover back over the transmission.

Be careful not to break the plastic oil guide tray, but it's ok if you do. We ran many races with that bit broken. I think it mainly helps cool 5th gear, which you won't be using anyway.

Does the axle size change? Does the clutch get smaller and gear ratio change?

You really do not want to use a gearbox from anything but a dual-cam 1.8 Mazda Engine. There is the list on the previous page which pretty much boils down to Escort GT and Protege LX.

Re: Ford Transmission Help

Our original transmission lasted 160K and 5 races (1 driver had never driven manual).  I strongly suggest rebuilding as it is cheap as hell, especially if you do it before you thrash 3rd/4th gear.  The worn-out synchros eventually snapped and stripped from forceful gear changes.  Harbor freight has a 20 ton press for 150, so for ~300 you get a nice trans and a sweet press.  You can use internals from DOHC 1.8L, Kia, Mazda, Ford.  The housing and axles are different, the protege axles are much beefier (better??).  cobratransmission.com has a bearing/seal/synchro kit you need for 140 shipped.

PM with questions, I have the full Mazda FSM (almost identical to Escort GT).  Been running a 90 Protege LX 1.8L DOHC for years.

P.S. change the wheel bearings before you race with that awesome press you just bought.

Def. Failure (n) - a pessimistic view of success.

I can just send you the books. They aren't doing me any good anymore. PM me and we can sort out shipping.

I can also attest that that tear down is exactly how I found the inside of mine to be. It's a great transmission to learn on.
