Topic: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

Hey there,

We are at the point of needing a cage built for our 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV6 race.  Wanted to ask the group...

Autopower weld-in vs a Cage from RollCage Components.com

> Any feedback on comparing these two?  They are about the same cost to us, both have a GTV6 cage, RCC mentions X style door braces bent into doors.  Autopower will only do one in 1.75 x .120 for us -- not sure how much extra weight and practical space that will add to the equation

We are really tryign to stay as low budget as possible, but what are we also giving up vs a custom built cage?  So far the custom built is about $800 more for us that we don't want to spend if we don't have to.

Thanks!

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

The price of someone who can weld.  We got a cage from RRC and we had to to a little trimming and fitting to get it all in but it worked, we just waited until the last minute to get a welder.

Think of it this way, host much is your life worth?  Granted , the welder we used was very good and got complements on his welds but do you know someone who can weld and weld good.  Could it be worth spending the extra $800 to have someone who builds cages for a living do it and feel safe?

Whichever way you go, good luck and keep the tires on the pavement.

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

Any kit you order takes fitting time. they all come with tubes slightly too long so that you can do the final trim and fitting and make it fit right. This work includes notching the tubes correctly to mate with each other, and cutting others to length. You'll also need to prep the car, weld in all your spreaders, then weld in the cage .

If you are not 100% comfortable with the above, just go pay the extra for someone to do that work for you. It's a LOT of work if you've never done it before, and it's really easy to get wrong.

If you are comfortable with the above, most recommend RCC. I have one of their kits for my BMW, it fits nice, but it took a long time to get, and I ended up making my own door bars because the ones he bent for me I really didn't like. I don't know Auompower at all. People have used Rhodes and S&W with success.

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

In short, Autopower does not market a Lemons cage for a reason.  that said, two of their cage type CAN be Lemons legal but with that unique a vehicle, I would go with RCC for the most part because he demands a very specific set of measurement that you have to know how to do.  If you don't, you will fail to install any kit successfully.

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

I have used 3 from RCC and when it comes time for a new car I will use them again.  He took the time to go to a junk yard and measure for my X-Type as I didn't trust my measurements while the other cars he already had measurements from prior builds.  First time I put one in I screwed up the A-pillar bar and he quickly shipped a new one.  As mentioned above the initial order does take some time so order a couple months before the time you think you may be installing.

Also, I always run on a very tight budget.  Wife gives me crap about spending too much on race cars.  So I spend almost all my money on safety, cage, harness, and seat for the first race.  Tires will suck,, the car may not be fast yet and have a squishy suspension but whatever, you'll live to race again.

Terribly bad accidents do happen in Lemons and too often high quality safety equipment saves lives.  If you can't yet afford high quality safety for you build then wait until next year or find a team member willing to shell out the cash, just don't skimp on it.

I don't know anyone who uses Autopower, but RCC is a very common cage in Lemons.  Just know if you weld it yourself or even know a welder they do not know how to weld a cage.  Find someone with cage building experience to help and guide you through the process.  It will save you tons of time and money.

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

Thanks all.  Not tryign to cheap out or learn to weld on this project -- just looking for feedback between these two offerings.

Sounds like RCC has very good feedback and Autopower is somewhat iffy on the Lemons front.  We will pay to have professional welding done on either one.  Once we get down to how much, will also take another look at the custom welder to see if he can get within a reasonable distance.

Please heed the advice that it is not JUST welding.  It is trimming and fitting.  If you can do that and tack weld things in place following the "How Not to Fail Tech" you are in a great position.  If not, seriously look into a cage builder that will follow the document I just mentioned verses a pre-bent cage kit.

Re: Cage Advice: Autompower vs RollCageComponents

RCC-bent cages went in half of our cars. Do oder yours in advance, he sometimes works alone. The quality and price is insane, though, there's a reason why nobody else is in this market seriously.
