Topic: Stig approved Jackalope 805 MK1 VW $2200, Atascadero Ca
Update: We just raced the car at Laguna Seca Jan 12-13. The car ran better than ever with zero mechanical issues and a fast lap of 1:53 by the Stig and 1:56 by the amateur *see post below for in car video of the Stig driving the Jackalope
Coming down the Corkscrew Laguna Seca minus cowboy
Now that the Jackalope car is completely sorted and reliable it’s up for sale to a good home. With over 3 years and almost 10,000 race miles this car has exceeded our expectations with a fun theme, nimble size and weight, predictable handling and consistent 10 finishes out 13 entries. The DNFs where due to front wheel bearing failures and we finally fixed the issue in 2018 by adding larger wheels bearings and 11” Corrado vented rotors and MK3 front hub/uprights. The Jackalope is not the fastest car on the track however it has finished in the top 20 and a 2:07 fastest lap at Sonoma Raceway.

$2200 (lower price pretty dang close to rock bottom) to a good home. We would like to see the car carry on with a new team and will make a deal for the right buyer. We love this car and will keep it and update the cage later this year if it doesn’t sell.
With reliability at the forefront we could never leave good enough alone. Before every race we not only prepped the car we also made improvements. To increase chassis rigidity the front coil towers are connected across and tied to the cage A pillars with triangular tube structure this made the car even more predictable.
The brakes are well balanced front to rear with 2 individual proportioners providing predictable and low wear (2 races and the front pads are 1/4 warn), power assist master cylinder and 11” front Corrado rotors. All inexpensive and easy to source consumables.
The 1977 VW Rabbit began its life on the track as a SCCA race car in Illinois. They next owners where the Military team who brought the car to California and raced two 24 Hours of Lemons races. The Military team was made up of some local San Luis Obispo Ca area, themed as a military vehicle and earned a Judges Choice award. The car was at Thunderhill for the World Record number of cars on track at once.
After 2 races we replaced the 1.6 carb motor with the current ‘97 ABA 2.0 EFI motor, completely rewired the car and put a cowboy on the roof. Car weights 1874 lbs without Cowboy and 1908 lbs with Cowboy. We raced one day at Buttonwillow without the Cowboy and gained a whole 2mph.
One major hitch is the current safety cage. The current cage is an approved SCCA production made cage for a VW rabbit and part of that production cage is 4 “bolt in” sections. The 24 Hour of Lemons rules for 2019 say no bolt in cages. That means this cage has to be replaced to run in 24 of Lemons race series 2019.
The cage however is approved to race Lucky Dog 2019 season. Lucky Dog rules also say no “bolt in” cage for 2019. However Chris Wilhelm at Lucky Dog said our cage is ok since the “bolt in” parts of our cage are not located where the cage meets the floor of the car. We are racing Laguna Seca with Lucky Dog January 12th and 13th 2019 if your there and interested come say hi and take a look. We couldn’t resist one more race in the car and on such an epic track so close to us in San Luis Obispo.
The buyer has 2 options:
1) buy the car with cage as is and make a new cage themselves (at least there is a cage to copy dimensions)
2) for an additional $2k the car will come with a new cage conforming to Lemons 2019 rules.
*not included with option to buy for an additional $399 installed in the car is a new Lifeline Zero 2000 FIA 4.0 ltr Fire Marshal Steel Fire Suppression System and a window net that we are installing to race Laguna Seca with Lucky Dog at Laguna Seca this January.
*Sparco seat and mount is not included. The car will come with an aluminum race seat will be installed.
