Re: Project No Blind Spots

Alright, just final wiring cleanup to do now. Really happy with how it came out and works.

These are the cameras I tucked under the mirrors. the only thing I don't like about them is I can't turn off the distance markers, so consider that when picking a camera.

And the one on the rear hatch. Yes the lights are on the whole time. Figure in the rain it just makes us more visible.

Re: Project No Blind Spots

Some notes on hardware.

Cameras:
These are the first ones I bought. Cameras are fine, but because of the form factor causing them to naturally aim down, they're tricky for using under mirrors. I ended up giving up on them because I couldn't aim them high enough.

These I bought second, and I like them because the bracket makes them really easy to aim. However, they don't have the ability to turn off the distance grids, which is annoying.

These are the third ones I bought, and I really hoped they'd be the ones I'd use. But for some reason the video kept cutting out on both of the ones I bought. Unsure if I got two bad ones, or if they just don't play nice with my custom wiring.

I ended up using the second ones and just dealing with the distance marker lines for now. I may change them in the future.

For the rear camera, I just grabbed this unit that bolts to your licence plate bracket. The lights are always on, but I'm chalking that up to extra rain visibility.

On screens. Turns out they are not all the same.

This is the first screen I bought.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074P … &psc=1

And then I bought two of these
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01E3 … &psc=1

They look like they should be about identical, however the physical screen on the second one is not centered in the bezzle, so the new cases I made didn't work right. Not a big deal, I just printed new cases with the new dimensions, but it was annoying to discover. If you don't plan to rip the screens from the cases it will never matter.

Here is the similar hardware that we used:

Re: Project No Blind Spots

Yea, there's a dozen or more cameras around the same price point. I assume almost all of them work just fine. I was looking for mounting style more than anything and missed the fact that I can't turn off the backup grid on the ones I used.

7" screen is nice, but it wouldn't have fit between the existing mirror and roll bar, and 3 of them next to each other would have been a bit long. But if you're using just one, it looks like it works well.

Re: Project No Blind Spots

Maybe you should buy some spare cameras (check out the slo mo at the end).

We went with a single camera on the license plate frame, which on our car (Audi Coupe GT) is pretty high.

We went with a 7" video screen and put it on our home brew dash panel. It's a bit low and not second nature to look there but maybe over time we will get used to it. Makes backing out of the garage a piece of cake...

Re: Project No Blind Spots

I mean, that's the kind of thing we're trying to avoid.

The system is more for seeing cars in those side blind spots, we've never had an issue with seeing who was right behind us. It's the cars that dive bomb up your inside that we sometimes miss in the blind spots of the large C-pillars that we're trying to catch. But having 3 cameras gives that 180° view.

Re: Project No Blind Spots

I get it, but I was just trying to point out that cameras mounted under the side mirrors are susceptible to all sorts of mayhem.

Eliminating the blind spots is great for giving confidence that you won't hit anything when you turn in, but it doesn't really help when someone else decides to turn into you or try to squeeze into a small opening between you and something else. The guy in the yellow/blue Honda came out of nowhere (they are super fast) and tried to get between us and the curbing at the apex. He only mis-judged slightly, another 1/2 inch and he would have made it. Until I slowed it down, I didn't realize that he hit us with the back of his car, and not his mirror.

Re: Project No Blind Spots

I get it. I'm just going to chalk it up as not a big enough risk to care. In over 20 races we've never had the mirrors hit. And if we ever do, well I suspect we'll need to replace more than the camera, which costs like $12 so i'm not really that worried.

Re: Project No Blind Spots

Bump, mostly because I forgot to throw an update here a year ago. We moved the screens, it was too hard to see them above the mirror with a helmet and neck brace on. Now they're in the center of the dash and you can glance at them without taking your eyes fully off what's in front of you. System is awesome, saved me a couple times with cars sticking their noses where they don't belong.

What do the Hopes, Dreams and Anti-BBQ Spray buttons do?

Lol. Anti-BBQ Spray is the fire suppression nozzle. Hopes and dreams turns on the LED next to it. We use it when all hope seems lost. We haven't found anything that we need wired to that switch yet, I just put an extra switch there for future proofing when we need one.
